Crawfordsville Review, Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, 30 October 1858 — Page 3
THEIWCLMH GOTERNMElfT and THE MBhW* «r XilOLIOIf TTB flMf Qaeen Victoria has lately scot to tha» Emp«rorNa|)o1e«ta the ftweral'hearte which ifu used by the British Government in conveying the remains of his uncle to his prison island of St. Helena. Nearly all of these sad reminiscences of French de fcftand English glory and cruelty bare nowbecn surrendered by the latter! The remains of the great Emperor himself were taken to France in 1840, during the government of Louis,Ph ilippo, andinterred with immense pomp.in the Invalides. That portion of the Island of St. Helena which included the grave and the house, or rath* er barn, where the illustrious captive resided for six years, has been ceded to the French Government, and is now governed by a French guard. Lastly, the funeral hearse has been relinquished. Hardly an outward vestige of that cruel and perfidious policy which marked the treatment of the English Government of him who so magnanimously, but as it proved unwisely, threw himself upon their protection "as the most generous, constant and powerful of hie enemies," now remains but it will ever be indelibly engraven upon the pages of history. It is a plague spot upon British honor which nothing will ever wash out.
A
Strange Scene in Court.
All present were forced to laugh at her wit, and, we presume, from her actions toward one of the counsel who cross-exam-ined her, that she could not fancy an ugly .*•. man. Indeed, when lie would question her she would turn her back upon him, and refuse to answer his interrogatories, because, as she said, "lie was old and ngly."
She would then turn to the Commonwealth's Attorney, place her arm around his neck, and ask his protection. We have never before seen such an amusing scene in a court-room. Mr.'Leake's better-half is the only one who-enn reinstate his vanity, after having been told to his face that he was "old and ugly." Mr. Gordon, the Commonwealth's Attorney, must feel highly flattered after receiving such affectionate cmbraccs from such a lovely female.
.A Dangerous Rival to Uncle Sam.—
A
London correspondent of the New York Ilcrulo says: John Bull is now ruminating over and will shortly digest a grand plan of securing all the trade of China to himself, via Lake Superior. 1. have seen the prospectus of a company forming here, with a .capital of S10,000,000, to lay down a railroad from the Lakes to Vancouver.— .This same prospectus will, ere this iy in type, have been brought before the public and with the prosport of :m easy money ••market, it will doubtless obtain the necessary funds to construct it, particularly it' the grant of fifteen miles is made by the
British Parliament, wliivli the projectors ^powerfully backed up by numerous mem"bersof the Parliament) will ask for next session. There is considerable feeling hero in favor of this project, of which the title is, "The Atlantic and Pacific Junclion Railway and Land (.'umpany.
Yi-.i.oriTY ok tiik Wi\i.—When the
wind moves at, the rate of one mile an hour it is hardly perceptible, at two miles an hour, it fans us n.s the gentle zephyr.— From ten to twenty it becomes high, and thirty to fifty eharae'erize storms from Vligh't to hard at eighty miles an hour it becomes a hurricane, and at one hundred tornado.
8©"Thc Louisville .Journal contains a call for an "Opposition" Convention in tl.at city on the 2*Jd of February, to nominate candidates for Governor, &<\, to be run in opposition to the Democracy. It appears that Americanism has lost all its charms for the people of Kentucky, and hence the name is dropped.
