[From the St. LouiaRepublican, bpi SPEEOT tAKD TKAV«X-P*OGKESS or TUB OTERUMD MAML-
Mr. 8. Allen, agent for the Overland M*il Company in this city, wm yesterday advised by letter of the progress made by the train since ita departure from St. Loum,
1
a short tm»e since, on the inaugural trip to the coast of thd Pacific ocean. His advices are contained in a letter from Mr. Butterfield, the President of the company, written from Foil Smith, under the date of tl»jl9i iiatX:Th||irc far satisfactory than were anticipatea at the setting out of the expedition. He states that the coaches arrived at that place «ftt 2.55 Sunday morning instead of 3:30 Monday moraing which is the schedule time—a gain of twenty-five hours. The distance to Fort Smith, from Tipton, the present terminus of the Pacific Railroad, is four hundred and seventy-five miles, and from St. Lotus over six hundred miles. This was accomplished in a little over three day?—an exceedingly speedy land movement as is apparent from the above date. If other divisions of the route are traversed as expeditiously as this one, and the saving in time holds, San Francisco will be reached in about twenty-two days from St. Louis. This is less than the time consumed in the sea journey, and, if kept up, must attract a large passenger travel to the overland route.
A MACIf IFFICENT II AULof PLUNDER. The following extraordinary statement given in the Bombay Telegraph, has been before briefly noticed: "it is stated in a lotter from Banda that .General "Whitlock's column bad made a large haul from the rebels. A company of the Madras Fortythird Native Infantry, attached to the column, found one hundred and forty car loads of gold bricks and nuggets, and forty lacs of rupees, and more was expectcd to be discovered. Besides this large amount of treasure, an immense quantity of jewels has been found. These arc supposed to have been the jewels belonging to the family of Peishwa, which fifty years ago mysteriously disappeared from Poonah, and were supposed to be in the possession of Scindiu or Hclka. It is believed they were stolen by Bfijce Bow's brother, the adopted father of the present Narrein How, who is now a prisoner. The treasure and jewelry found arc said to be of the value of nine crorcs of rupees, or niuc millions sterling." The last news of Nona Sahib was that lie had crossed the Gorga, and was reported to have sold his famous ruby valued by the natives at $1,000,000, for £1.01)0.
Wo invite tlic attention of tlic sick mid afflicted, to the advertisement* in ur columns of l)r. Kostcrly's Iodine nnd Sarsaparilla, nnd GiidleyV Silt Rheum nnd Tetter Ointment, Dr.. Cartor's Cough Balsam, Dr. Maker's Specific, Dr. IIoo|m i's Female Cordial, and Dr. Easterly's Fever and Ague Killer. These medicines are prepared Ity a thoroughly educated Physician, Chemist. nnd Pharmaceutist, so that all can rely upon thoiii as bcirg safe nnd effectual in curing thedisoiisoh for which they arc recommended. They are htaiulard remedies, and can be found in nearly every Drug and Apothecary store in the United states. luno l'J-tfm.
