Crawfordsville Review, Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, 21 August 1858 — Page 3
A TEWWHAMULniE TO SAM FJtAHCI8GO. Tie New York Journal of Commerce speaking of the proposed telegraph from the United States to Havana, says the company will probably be organiied in Sep tembert and addst rr
The distance /f&ih Key West to Havana is only seventy miles, &&d the cost of laying tho cablc, it is said, Will be about five hundred dollars a mile. The cable will be "of the three-threaded pattern—tliat is, Yrith three insulated conductors. The Magnetic Telegraph. Company have agreed to build a branch from Savannah, Ga., to Key West, so that at no distant day New York can be put in telegraphic conncction with Havana. The advantages of such a line to) shippers and traders in New York and elsewhere arc too obvious to need pointing out.
The satnc company propose to run wires from Ifavana to Cape Antonio, the extreme westerly point of Cuba thence across the channel to Yucatan, a distance of about forty miles, where it will connect with a line already built to the city of Mexico.— They also propose to extend-the wires from Yucatan to Tchuantcpec, on the Pacific, about four hundred miles, and south from Tchuantcpec to Panama, about eleven hundred miles, passing through Nicaragua— thus affording telegraphic communication with the United States and Cuba for the steamboat and railroad companies at Panama, the steamboat company of Nicaragua, and to all ships that may choosc to send messages from those points.
Lastly, this company propose to construct a line from Tchuantepec to Santiago, where there is already a line to San Francisco, three hundred miles north.— The distance from Tehuantepec to Santiago is not far from two thousand miles.— The line will pass through a country pretty well settled.
"Time was when the Brains were Out the Man was Dead."—That
The St. Louis Democrat says the most singular feature of the affair is that Mr. Brown is in a rapid way to rceovery. On Thursday lie was able to sit up in bed and converse intelligently with all who called upon him. There is 110 doubt of the truthfullncss of the statement, and the case is one of those wonderful instances that arc occasionally recorded where partics have recovered from the effect of wounds in those parts of the system which, under almost any circumstances, it has been considered certain and immediate death to disturb. The affair lias cxcited the earnest attention of the mcdical profoLwnon.

however, is of the past. On Saturday, the 7th inst., a man named Brown, a native of Memphis, Tcnn., fruitlessly sought for work at Lagrange, Mo., and, growing despondent, undertook to end his troubles by shooting «ut his brains with a pistol.— Obtaining the weapon, he placed the muzzle to hie head and discharged the contents into Lis brain. Upon examination by a .competent surgeon it was ascertained that the ball passed through the skull, between the eyes, and lodged in the hack of the head. Part of the brain was scattered over the front of the hat.
