Crawfordsville Review, Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, 28 November 1857 — Page 3
A REVEREND SHYLOCK. The Chicago <Press> gives an account of a
note-shaving clergyman in that city, and vouches for the correctness of its asser-
tions—otherwise they would be deemed almost impossible in a Christain [sic] land: An excellent and worthy man, a mechanic, whose own hard hands had laid the foundation of his moderate fortune, had raised the sum of $3,000 on securities, even in the present depressed condition of prices, worth three times that sum. The security given was in a form that cut off all redemption. The note matured in an evil hour, the present crisis, when the debtor found himself unable to meet his obligation. His creditor, a Connecticut clergyman, (understood to be seeking a location both as a preacher and a money-lender in the West, where, as he has said, "it pays better,") was in the city. He was importuned to extend the note, if only for a short time. He was offered four per cent, a month. "<I will do it for one hundred per cent. per annum>," was the rejoinder.
Finally, the Reverend creditor agreed to receive the moderate interest of <sixtytwo per cent>. as his ultimatum, and on declining this offer, the property, worth $10,000, was sent to the auction block, and sold to the creditor for barely the face of the note, a little upward of $3,000. Thus a worthy, hard-working mechanic was beggared to satisfy the inhuman greed of a
/tl
our
Christian minister of the same denomina-1{jU[ also, the beautifully illustrated tion and a member of the same Christian faith with himself.
That transaction should stick to that clergyman through life. We trust he will for the sake of decency use in future only an amended form of the Lord's Prayer, for if his lips falter not in the utterance of the beautiful petition, "Forgive <us> our debts as we forgive <our> debtors, he must add dou-
ble-dyed hypocrisy to his unseemly lust for gold. The names of the parties are very well known. The transaction which has ruined the one should in a far deeper measure disgrace the other. ———<>———
B@i~ We find the following in an exchange. We solemnly protest against the .New Albany and Salem Railroad being compelled to father any such responsibilities:
Important Parentage.—We have recently heard some gentlemen from liloomaiigton laughing about a case of illegitimacy coming oft' there. It scorns that there resides in the place a young lad}' of somewhat questionable character, who was a jjreat favorite with the employees of the New Albany and Salem Railroad, On being presented with an heir, and urged to make some one father it, she said that she could swear that, it ^belonged to the New AllHiiuj and Salem Railroad Co)vxany! That Company is a great one.
""I'M SICK OF FIGHTING "'EM."—Two
of
our venerable Republican citizens were the other day mourning over the rccont election news. The cider, who has evidently «een much hard service in his long-contin-iicd warfare on the Democracy, was in .a yery de-sjuinding mood. "My frit-ntl" .«aid lie, "1 don't know what to think of this Democratic party.
I
have always fought
them hard. But it makes no odds what we tell the people, or how much excitement we get up, this infernal Democracy always heats us in the end, as it is now doing, and, for my part, I'm tired and sick of lighting 'cm,"—Bangor Union.
