yc»KAT, mtKPnBLlCA!!P SPEECH in •Tilt COirifECTIClJT LEGISLATURE. The following speech in the Connecticut

"Legil*turei

by Mr. Richards, of Ashford,

wo find reported in the Hartford

Times.

•The speech was made against the motion

to indefinitely postpone a series of antislavery resolutions, reported by the com

mittee on federal relations: "Gentlemen of the House of Representatives: (The speaker nodded, leisurely as much as to say "I am one of that number.") Slavery is a wicked and a bad jnatitution, my friends, and I go again it wherever it exists. It hadn ought to have a resting place on this globe* No, my dear sir! it is inhuman and a fraud upon our country and its laws I say not another step shall you go. Now my

dear sir,

when I look back on Jefferson, who was the infinite arkitcckt of the Declaration of Independence, whereby slavery never could exist, making all men free and equal, and alike, what do I find? My respect and admiration arc delighted, gentlemen. And the infinite wisdom of this House should sustain that act. My feelings on this sub-ject-ah, are very ardiant, and if I say an}*thing so severe as to hurt the feelings of the oilier side, I ask their pardon. My dear

sir!

!j

1

Baid this old gray headed man, white with age, and tottering on the grave, "seek the Lord! seek him airly that you may find him and then make yourself laaster of the ecicncc of government." Oh, my dear friends, we must avoid the evil deeds of this world, for the old man saw the democratic party go up, and up, up and up, high and higher till it got to bo a majority, and that was doing a good deal in those times at Ashford! Let us beseech the Lord to conduct us 111 the right paths, and let us avoid the evil temptations of the times, and bucklc. on our armor for the day which no man knowcth when it comes. And finally, I go for these resolutions, for I am out'n spoken and plain hearted aiul ardiant in my feelings, gentlemen. And finally, as my time is up, I will say no more, though I beseech you, my

dear sir,

not to enter

into -vtlie beggarly elements of the world, full of wickedness, and all manner of evil things, and I hope tlicy will pass-r, and I •frill stop."

JOHN ADAMS AND THOMAS JLFFEitt'

Hoy'

On the morning of the -1th of July, 1 S"2G, Mr. Adams, then evidently near his death,

nwoke at the ringing of bells and the lining vf cannon. The attendant who watched with him, asked him if lie knew what day •'it was. "Oil! yes," he replied, "it is the glorious Fourth of July, (.Joel bless it ^Ood bless you nil."

In ihc forenoon, the orator of the day, I Rev. Sir. Whitney, the parish minister of -f'Mr. Adams, called to see him, and found .'him seated in an a'in chair. In the course •Jof the interview, Mr. Whitney asked him

:t'or

a sentiment to be given at the public table, lie replied: "I. will give, Tndepen'tencc forever!" After a few moments had elapsed, a lady asked if he wished to add anything to the toast and he said, "Not. a syllable." This occurred an hour or two .•only bafore he breathed his last. In the. course of the day he said, "It is a great /and good day." That his thoughts were dwelling on the scenes of 1770, is evident from the last words which lie uttered. "Jefferson survives," which were spoken about the time that Jefferson expired. I

In like manner, ill': Jefferson, in the short, intervals of delirium which occurred in his last hour?, seemed to dwell exclusively on the events of the Revolution.— .IJo talked in broken sentences of the committees of safety. One of his exclamations was, "Warn the committee to be on their 'guard and he instantly rose in his bed, and went through the act of writing a hurried iiote. But for the greater part of the time during the last day of his life, he was blessed with the enjoyment of his reason. The only anxious wish he expressed for himself was that he might live to breathe the air of the fiftieth Anniversary of Independence. When that day arrived, he was repeatedly heard to murmur his sntisfnc* tionv

©ST It seems as if death had found a banquet among our master spirits in the last decade. Almost all the great and il- JLUU Cashby lnsti-ious men who came into public life 'during the iirst twenty-five years of the present century, have been snatched awav wiihiu that time. The list which memory. calls at the moment is formidable in numbers, and the persons whose names are upon it were conspie^us for vast and varied ability. First, iu Point of time, is that of .^Joihn Quincy Adams, who died in 1847 then follows those of Keut, Polk, Taylor,

Calhoun, Clay, McDuffie, Story/Webster, King, Woodbury, Sergeant, Berrien, Claytop, Hill, Uurgess, Chcves, and Marcy.— What immense powers, what political and legal research, what oratorical skill and diplomatic erudition, what wise.foresight and wonderful experience' have been lost by their deaths to the nation! When will it, if over, be restored in the persons and minds of others?
