TIB TAtOKK AT WVAl.

Gm. Henningten, Colonel Titus and one tlitUioa of the Army of Nicaragua have arfiftd lei New York. One of the reportera

Tribune visited the former and deaome information in regard to the allegation of the coantrj by Walker. The f^orter states: jSisec the last advices received here firbai General Walker, the Allies made an 'on the intrenchmenta at ftivaa, with

S1

fttce of 2,600 men. The assault lasted hours, and was hotly contested throughOat. As near as could be ascertained, the enemy lost 400 killed and wounded, includ.'ing 30 prisoners taken by General Walker one cannon belonging to the Allies also .fell into the hands of the filibusters. Walker's total loss in this engagement in killed and wounded did not exceed fifty or aixty men.

From this time until the second week in April, when General Mora arrived and as.tamed command of the Allies, no offensive operations, to epeak of, took place on either side. On the 11th of the month the

Allied forces, led on it was said, by deserters from the filibuster camp, made •'a desperate attack on Gen. Walker's intrenchments and succeedcd in gaining possession at one time of the lower plaza.

About one hundred and fifty had entered that portion of the town, when General Henuingson succeedcd in bringing three guns to bear upon them, which mowed them down with great slaughter.About half of them escaped, and the remainder being surrounded were obliged to surrender. After a good deal of hard fighting the enemy were finally repulsed, but not without contesting the ground inch by inch. One hundred and three prisoners in all remained in the hands of Gen. Walker after the fighting was over.

The hopes of the filibusters were greatly sustained by the constant expectation of relief from Col. Lockridge and party, on the San Juan Kiver, who were daily looked for. Of course no correct intelligencecould be obtained respecting his situation and prospects, as all the avenues of approach from that quarter were in the hands of the Allies. But as day after day no news came from the San Juan, the garrison in Kivas began to despair and were fast losing their spirits, when information was received that Captain Davis, of the United States aloop-of-war St. Mary's had seized the schooner Granada, containing half of all Gen. Walker's ammunition. ,i- Then, in view of the hopeless prospect before them, the design of retiring from the cbuilitry began to be entertained.—

Meantime Captain Davis proceeded to the eeat of war, and endeavored to urge the contending parties to come to term9.— General Walker, after prolonged and painful consultation with his officers, concluded to enter into stipulations with Captain Davis, anu he subsequently surrendered to him as an officer of the United States Government. The Allies were not named in the instrument. By a full understanding, however, the retiring forces were not molested by them—one ol' ihc Costa Rican Generals attending Walker and his staff through (ho lines of the enemy, a hostage, it were.

At the instance of Capt. Davis, the woman and children, numbering about seventy, were removed from the camp on the 20th of April. The formal capitulation took place ou the 30th of the same month, and the trops set. out on the march to £au Juan del Sur on the 1st of May.

The whole number of Walker's men at the time of the surender was four hundred arid seventy-five of these two hundred and sixty, including officers, were cffcct4ve, one hundred and seventy-five were on the sick and wounded list, and forty were natives.

Provisions had been exceedingly scarce .(luring the whole month of April, and the men had lived chiefly on mule and horsemeat nearly all that time. Dogs, cats and other animals were sometimes killed to furnish a novelty. General Henuingson describes horse-llesh as quite passable— when one can get no better.

The en«*my, the General states, had suffered much from desertions, and on the 1st of May could uot have had more than two thousand men about Rivas. He thinks that, had Gen. Walker held out two weeks longer, scarcely a thadow would have been left of the Allies.

PLANITAUY

DISTANCES.—For along pe

riod, astronomers unsuccessfully endeavored to determine the distance between the 'stars and the earth and it is only within a comparatively short time that the interesting problem can be solved. The distance which generates us from the nearest stars is, according to M. Argo, about 206,000 times the distance oft lie sun from the earth, more than 206,000 times 95,000,000 of miles. Alpha, in the coustellation of Cen^taur, is tho star nearest the earth its light -takes more than three years to reach us, so that, wero the star annihilated, we should •till see it for three years after its destruction. If the sun were transported to the place of this, the nearest star, the vast circular disc, which in the morning rises majestically above the horiion, and in the eveuing occupies a considerable time in deoending entirely bel«r the same line, \would have dimensions almost iinpreceptible even with the aid of the most powerful telescopes, and its brilliancy would range among the stars of the third magnitude only.

THE KBNTTJCKY HARVESTER A COMBINED BEAPEB AND H0WEB Patented, November 25th., 1866.

Miller. Wingate & Co., Manufacturers, Louiwille, Ky.

Machine was introduced and used for the first time during the harvest of 1356. when nearly two hnndred and fifty of them were sold. and. though new, it has already established for itself a reputation which has never been reached by any other Combined Reaper and Mower, and it now occupies a position far in advance of all its competitors.

We nave made some valuable improvements, suggested by careful observation and cxperimedt during the last harvest. These will be added to all our Reapers and Mowers now bui Iding for the harvest of 18S7.

ADJUSTABILITY. —This machine can be changed from a Reaper to a Mower in five minutes, and when at work can be altered to any desired height in one half minute.

The following premiums have been awarded to this machine during and since the harvest of 1S56: First Premium as a Mower, over .Manny's Machine, on trial, before the Committee of the Eminenco Association First Premium as a Reaper, and as a Combined Reaper and Mower over Manny's Machine, on trial, before the Committee of the South-Western Agricultural and Mechanical Association. Loaisville, Ky First Premium as a Reaper over the New York Hand Raking Reaper, tho New York Self-Ra-king Reaper, and Manny's Machine, at the Kontucky State Fair, held at Paris, Oct. 1856 also en extra Premium as a combined lieapcr and Mower, over Manny's Machine, at the samo Fair.

This Machine is got up at a greater expense, is made of bettfr materials, (being chiefly of wronght iron), with better finish, and is more durable than any other Harvester, while, at the same time, the price is as low as that asked for the most ordinary Combided Machines.

One of these mat. bines can be seen set up, and in complete working order at CHR1STMAN & GREGG'S, Crawfcrdsvillc, Indiana. May 16, lS57-vSn4S-Sm,
