CEN. JACKSON'S GOLD BOX. Mr. An^fcw^j-pckson^, Jrvthc adopted Bon of Andrew Jackson, has replied to the ficJdrOMcd^himby thcchairjuan of a iRpceial committee of the Now York Common Council, making inquiry relative to the famous box. Gen. oMpHirtikB ComNo.—We learn the ad-vance-guard of" the Hpring emigration of these deluded people, have arrived ill the country from Europe and are on their way to the land of abominations. The Rochester Union, of the 2£th, snys that a train arrived there that morning, consisting of twenty-eight cars filled with Mormons. The party consisted of eight hundred and fifty persons of all ages and sexes. The train was drawn by three locomotives. These passengers came* from England to Hoston, in the ship Georgc Washington, and arrived in the early-part of last week. They were ticketed from Boston to Iowa City, by railroad, over the New York Contral, Lake Shore, Michigan Southern, and Chicago and Rock Island Railroads.— From Iowa City they will cross the country witli teams to Utah, to become subject to Brigham Young, and help to swell the thousands who obey his commands as the pretonded representative of the Most High.— They appear to be a respectable, cleanly and intelligent class of people. Among them were mahy of the substantial sort of men and .-a number of good looking women, lirighhm Young can find a hundred in thin

adorn his harem. How many iS who were here this morning full of health, hope and beauty, are destined to have their anticipations blasted, and in few brief months become the most degraded and abject slaves! They are the victims of fanaticism and self sacrificed.— Such is the course of fantic faith, so truthfully doscribed by Moore, in Lalln llookh —oli, Uio lovor may

Distrust that look liieh steals his soul away Thcbnbe may ceasc to think that it can play With Heavens rainbow --Blehymista may doubt Tho shining gold thcircrucible gives out But Faith, fanatic Faith, onco wedded*fn»t To some dear falsehood, hugs it to tho last.

TIIEWHEAT CROPIN ILLINOIS.—We have for weeks past examined our country exchanges with great care, and have been industrious in our inquiries of individuals, endeavoring to ascertain the true condition and real prospects of the growing wheat crop of the State. The result of our reading and inquiry may be briefly summed up. The crop is a. failure—in many districts, containing each two or three counties, an entire failure in others there is a prospect of. tlic growth of the usual yield acre sown in others again, a half crop may be harvested 'but nowhere, as we can learn, aro there, any fields that have wholly escaped1 injury. Central Illinois, from Logan county southward, seems to have suffered most. In the two extremes of the State the report is more cheering but, unfortunately, those are the localities in which only a little winter grain is sown. In the heart of the wheat growing district, the winter has done its work—never before so badly. This is a discouraging account to send abroad but it is important that the facts should-!)® known.—Chicago Tribune.

HON. DANL. W. VOORHEES.—This young Demooratio orator arrived in our city last evening, and at present is stopping at the Bramble House, but takes the 4 o'clock train this 1\ M. for Indianapolis.

There are many popular Democrat speakers in the Eighth Congressional District, to whom the masses which compose the Democratic party are indebted for the laborious and self-sacrificing spirit manifested during the late Presidential campaign— but above all, if wo rightly understand the feelings of the Democracy in this vicinity, aro they more indebted to Daniel W. Voorliccs, for the gallant, highspirited, daring fight he made for a seat in our Federal Congress. He was defeated. He was stricken down—but only

that the political principals he had inculcated and expounded might be fully weighed by the unprejudiced mind, and

1 might be fully weigh rise to

pre-eminence in the estimation of his party and political associate. Lafayette American, 29th.

3-^ GOVERNOR OF UTAH The leading column of the Washington Union contains Uic following announcement

We understand that the governorship of Utali Territory has.been tendered to Major Benjamin McCulloiigh, of Texas, and that"there""trevery reason to believe that be wilT accept t|ic officii'.. It would be dif-, fioult to name another p&rson who combines in hinfkelf so Ihariy qualities for the successful discharge of the duties of this important and .delicate trust as arc undoubtedly possessed-by Major McCullough.

SINGER'S SEWING MACHINES.

GREATSUCCESS

is always the most conclusive

proof cf great merit. Judged by this tot there is no labor-saving machino before tho public comparable to Singer's Sewing Machines. After establishing the highest reputation in the United States they were exhibited at the late "Exposition Univcrsello" in France, where they carried off tho highest premium and a great manufactory to make them 1ms been built in Paris.

In every Branch of Industry

In which sewing is to bo done, these machines can be used with immense profit. As the speed of tho Railway train is to traveling on foot, so is sewing with Singer's Machines compared with liand-sow-ing. No tailor, shoemaker, dressmaker, carriage trimmer, saddler, hatter, &c.,

&c.,

In all private families where there is much sowing to be done these macliinos aro an invaluable assistance. Planters and hotel keepers find them particularly convenient and profitable. These machines are simple in thoir construction and very strong and durable, being tho only kind of Sewing Macliinc ever made, by which every sort of work, coarse or fine, could bo perfectly executed. Thousands of inferior and worthless Sewing Machines have been made and sold under various names, but Singer's Machines alone have been found everywhere to satisfy the wants of tho public.

Piain printed instructions for using, aro sent with cacli machino, from which any one can rcadtlv acquire the art of managing them. The machines aro packed securely to go to any part of tho world. To all persons desiring more particular information we wit], on application by letter at cither of our offices forward a copy of I. M.
