Crawfordsville Review, Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, 4 April 1857 — Page 3

The/steamer hrrived about 8 o'clock this mornings-with California dates to the 5tli inst.,and nearly 1,200,000 in specie.

The steamer ,Pacama, from San Juan 4el Sod.luwd arrived at.'Panama with one bundled and twenty-five deserters from General WaDierV forces, in a most destitute Condition. Their passage to the United States wan paid by the Costa Bican Government. One hundred left in the Grenada for New Orleans and the remainder are among the passengers on the Illinois.

There is nothing later from Gen. Walk *er's position. The Codt* Bican papers state that 8,000 troops aire to be added to the allied troops Gen. Carras would march with fifteen hundred men upon Rivas, and one thousand would march against San Juan del Sua with the intention of surrounding Walker's position with 6,000 taenl- The condition of Walker is universally considered very desperate.

NEW

Some deserters from Walker report that his troops have unanimously refused to -leave Rivas to fight but arc willing to defend their position.

California papers contain no news of im-

f'lour

ortance. The markets generally are dull, is selling at $16, with some speculative movements. State stocks dull, and selling nominally at 50c.

The receipts from the mines arc meagre, owing to the heavy floods throughout the State.

Edward McGowan, exiled from California by the Vigilance Committee, has returned to Sacramento and demanded a trial. A resolution to fix on Sacramento for his trial was under debate.

A special election for Senator in San. Francisco resulted in the success of the Vigilance Committee's candidate.

The Supreme Court of California has decided that the Legislature has no authority to appropriate money to pay the interest ol" the State debt, and the Court will enjoin any attempt to levy a tax for that purpose. The Senate has paused a resolution that the-State honor''requires the payment of the State, but a resolution to submit the proposition to the people was lost.

Mr. Bates, late State Treasurer, has been indicted tor felony, and his trial commenced the day the steamer left.

A deficit of 340,000 iu the accoun's of Kstelle, the keeper of the State prison, baa been reported, and a legislative comiaitt.cc reports him as unworthy of office in eonserfjuenco of various gross misdemeanors.

WASHINGTON,

March 23.

Mr. Walker this morning had a long interview with gentlemen of Kansas concerning affairs in that Territory, wishing to acquaint himself with all the particulars previous to going there.

•v-'•'** ST. LOUIS, March 27. The Springfield Journal states that ncarJv a million of the circulation of the stock banks of Illinois has been returned to the Auditor of State and cancelled since the lost report to the Legislature. This reduces the circulation of the banks of the State to about five and a half millions.— Tho amount issued on stock basis was upwards of six and a hall millions.

WASHINGTON', March '28.

Postmasters re-appointed: Jacob Carter, Concord, New Hampshire Reuben S. Cheney, Jackson, Michigan.

Lieut. Meade's case before the Naval Court of Inquiry is being concluded, having occupicd seventeen days. That of Peter Wager, late a master in the navy, will be taken up on Monday.

ST. LOUIS, March 28.

Tho cause of the explosion last night, was the accidental discharge of a pistol into a canister of powder. Three persons wore killed, and one severely and several slightly injured. The stocks of both stores were entirely destroyed.. Loss upwards of $50,000.

A largo fire occurred af"Liberty, Wisconsin, one week ago. I.oss $25,000.

.. CHARLESTON, S. C., March 28, 1857. Steamship Isabel arrived to-day from Havana and Key West, with dates to the 25th.

The Isabel brings two companies of artillery under command of Major Arnold from Fort Myers, Florida, bound to New York.

Thero is no Indian news. No rucks reported at Key West. From Havana we learn that the duty on funize and corn has been reduced onethird.

Troops are being concentrated at Havana for embarkation to Mexico. The condition of the Island is prosperous. Weather 6iultry.

Steamship Grenada had arrived at Havana with one hundred deserters from Walker's army in Nicaragua, bound to New York.

A lawyer, riding through a town

stopped at a cottage to enquire his way.— The lady of the house told him he must keep straight on for some time then turn to the right but said that she herself was going to piws the road he must take, and that if he would wait a few minutes she would show him the way. "Well,"said he, "bad company is better than none. Make haste." After jogging on five or six miles, the gentleman asked if he had not coiue to the road ho must take. 'Oh yes,'' B&id she we hare passed it two or three miles back,: but I thought that bad company was better than none, so I kept you along with Bl#. *.%ir r.f

GRENADA.—The latest dates from

Bogota state that 'the propositions of Mr. Morse, our Special "Envoy, were under secret consideration, and there seemed to be I but little chance of an amicable arrangement. The tone of the press and majority in Congress evinced the bitterest opposition. The'publication of what purported to be Mr. Morse's instructions, had creatcd great excitement on the Isthmus. The natives aTe anxious that the Government •shall refuse the propositions, although they •expect that the result will be the military •occupation of the Isthmus by the United .States.
