Mr. Keiti in! the House of Representatives, made an effective oration on tho President's Message. He is a young man Of considerable ability, and if be comports himself wisely, he will in time become a very prominent member
Senator Clay, of Alabama 49 a forcible speaker, in respect to argument and strength, solidity, concentration of language, but his voice is weak, and being also of slim frame and only occasionally, gracefal in the movement of his arms, his addresses can have influence in the Senate only, so far a* they may be specially conclusive in the just elucidation of truth by fact and in flic wisdom of ita application."
f&~ In his calm retreat in Dorsetshire, Mr. Macready, the actor, is a living the
of a Christian gentleman, endearing himself alike to his poorer neighbors and those wlio are bis equals in rank, by bis kindly deeds and enlightened sociability. He-has built athis own expense a school for the .education of fifty boy a, which has now been, in full work for a year, and its breaking up 'tor the Christmas holidays was made the occasion for a kindly meeting between the founder and the boys. -i
L6*D NAPIKR.—The London correspondent of tbe jV. Y. Commercial Advertiser Rpcaks confidently of the confirmation of Lord Napier's appointment as Minister to the United States, and adds: •Lord Napier was lately Sccrctary of the British Legation at Constantinople, where his duties during the recent war, as well as amidst the circumstances that preceded it^wcre extremely arduous. He returned from Turkey about six months since, and has been residing at his scat in Scotland. He'is unmarried, and his age is on? ly'thirty-five but united with a frank and cordial disposition, he has the gravity which'belongs to active cxpcricnce, and is likely to prove one of the most acceptable persons that could have been selected to cultivate and preserve the friendly feelings of the two nations. His father, the late I/ord Napier, was British Plenipotentiary to China, and died about eight or ten years ngo at Hong Kong."
HON. JICSSK D. BillG1IT. Tlio re-election of the lion. Jesse P.
Bright to the seat lie has so ably ami hnnnrably.fillcd in the United (States Senate, will give great satisfaction, not only to the Democrats ol'the State, but to those of the whole Union. In the recent contest for the Presidency, Indiana rolled back the tide of frantic madness and fanaticism tlmt threatened to overwhelm and sweep away th ita bitter waters all the paternal and natural sympathies and attachments which constitute so great a portion of the strength and glory of our free institutions.
There never was a more important victory achieved by the noble Democratic army of this cOuntry, and most appropriate it is that Indiana, having borne so prominent and important, a part in the van of the great battle, should sustain its great chicftain in the post to which he is now called by placing in the Senate one of her best and noblest sons. Mr. Bright has acquired a National reputation alike honorable to his State and himself. He is a man in whom the Democracy of flic State can and does repose unlimited confidence as one of the ablest and most unflinching champions of the great principles upon which our party is based. Indiana and Pennsylvania istood side by side in the nomination and election of 5fr. Buchanan, but how different is their position now Pennsylvania, with a Democratic Legislature, has selected and apostate and a truckling demagogue to represent her in the Senate to which we •have sent tho true-hearted and gallant
Bright and that, too, by the vote of every Dpmocratic member of the Legislature, except one, who was absent in consequence of sickuess.
The Hon. G. N. Fitch, associated with CSov. Bright, in Senatorial honors, is a true and steadfast Democrat, and a firm and devoted friend of his. He will reflect, honor upon the State and credit upon himself.—State Sent ike/.
Poor Fellow!

A merchant of this city, just returned from the east, was snowed in on the Hudson Hirer llailroad from Monday until Wednesday norning. One poor fellow on tfe«tain was really to be pitied. He had engagMMftt to be married on Tuesday ereting, and of course could not be present to claim hii bride. The disappointment was so severe that it found vent in tears, and the poor fellow cried like a child.—Laf. Courier.
