At the present juncture the foflo&tfng «c* count of the land and sea forces of th« United States—put forth ,by "An Amencan," will be found of much interest: "The United State* keeps on foot a very small standing armj, (only 12,000 to 15,000 men,) chiefly for the purpose, of holding in check the savage tribes within her oirn borders. The standing army Is not -counted apon in case of war, except as a •nucleus, round which to gather her forces. Sbe rests her dependence on f«sr«oitizen sol di^rs, her militin, who, in all the States, are kept enrolled nnd armed, and are called out for training at least once a year—in som«Stairs oftener, and a large proportion of wbcm, called uniform companies, are kept in constant drill and exerrise. Every city lias many thousands of these citizen, sol diers, who can be collecfed at an hour's notice. Now, this enrolled militia fore*-, a appears from tho Army Register for 1855 amounts to 2.407,826—nearly two millions and a half of fighting men. By menus of the railway facilities, one hundred or twp hundred thousand men could be assembled at
given point in twenty-four hours. What this force really can do was shown in the late Mexican war, when at the first war notice, fifty thousand men offered them selves for service, and in a few months three hundred thousand were ready to March to M»zich. With a knowledge of these facts, will the 'leading journal' be disposed to repeat its ridicule of the military resource of the United States? "Now in regard to the navy. From the American Almanac for 185G, just published, it appears that the vessels of war of the United Sta'es :ire 75 in number. Of these 11 arc ships of the line, carrying from 80 to 120 guns cach. The Pennsylvania, though rating 120, carries actually 138 guns, nnd is pierced far 140—alargernumter than those of the boasied Duke of Wellington, which carries but 131 guns. '1 lu there arc 13 heavy 50 gun frigates, of the largest nize, several of ih&m new, and all in excellent order. There are 19 .sloops ol war, carrying from 15 to 22 guns cach many of these are armed with bomb can non, and would bo formidable antagonists. The steam navy consists of 21 vessels 1 of these are steam frigates and seven of tle twelve Are screw vessels of a size equal to ships of the line, nnd carrying 50 of the heaviest bomb cannon. All these are now —just off the stocks. These seven screw frigates, added to the 11 ships of the line, making a fleet of 18 war vessels, thatwounl not hesitate to go into action with any force that Britain, under present citcumstances could readily produce."

i, 3ay of intense excitement in our quiet town, caused by a young ladjr of this neighborhood being lost in a snow storm. The facts are as follows:
A Miss Martha Perkins, who resides five miles from this place, was on a visit to her brother-in-law who resides here. On Tuesday last, the 5th inst., she started to walk home. I was snowing hard at tin time she started and continued for two days. The snow was then eighteen inches deep. Her road was mostly overhigh roiling prairie, the snow beating directly in her face. She pursued her journey with much difficulty until within a mile of home when she lost her way and rambled about until near sunset, when she took refuse for the night in a deep bushy ravine.— There in the deep snow she construct* a very ingenious little house out of the tall weeds that £rew nearby, and there spent the firt night of camp life, wLhoutfood to sustain life or fire to warm, or any clolhing except her apparel to shelter from the the little weed house she had erected being the only thing she had to keep hor from exposure to the bleak winds and howling stnrin. Early nx» morning) she stared out in pursuit of her home, but went entirely a different course. After traveling all day, frequently through snow four feet deep, exhausted and fatigued, her feet frozen, abandoning all idea of over reaching home, she stopped and again built her a weed hut. In this little frail tenement she resigned herself to her fate, and it camc well nigh being her last resting place upon this earth. She remained in this situation, and at this last named place, from Wednesday until Saturday, abcJut 1^ o'clock when she. was fuund by a party who were in search of her. She had been out four days and a half, and four nights, exposed to the merciless storm of the prairies. The wrather was intensely cold. During two nights of her exposure, the thermometer ranged from 17 to 20 degrees below zero. She said to those who found her, that she never slept the whole time, believing that if she had gone lo sleep, she would never wake ajxain.
It is a most miraculous escape from death =ind those noble spirits who searched and found her deserve great praise. To think that a young and delicate girl, not over 1G years, could travel through such a snow iorm five miles, wading often wait deep in snow and piercing blast of the wintery wind four days and four nights, without, food, fire or even a blanket, and then live, is hard to believe, but such is the f?ict beyond a doubt, as at least half our cili/.ens, who were in search of her, can testify.— Her feet were badly frozen, but it is believed she will entirely recover, wish the oss perhaps of a feiv of her toes. Oh who does not feel thankful that this fair being was plucked as a young and tender llowc-r from the very jaws of death, and restored to lu.*r almost distracted parents?

"Apprehension for the ultimate safety of firmly all these vessels are probably groundless, but, on their arrival, they will report destructive gales and rude encoun'ers with the ice. Banovvs, of Dedham, M-. ss., alluding to the intense cold of this winter, states that he never saw the sky so brilliant and clcar by, day and night before. He attributes the cause of the cold to the hundreds of tons of powder which have been burned at Sevastopol, and other places. Laving .put into circulation large quantities of ^nitrous gas.— "If saltpeter and salammoniac," Jte says, "be put into a given quantity of water at 50deg." it will reduce its temperature 50 degi^'Ke therefore concludes that tbe gaseS' of the exploded gunpowder named have exerted a great cooling influence upon the atmosphere, botji ia- Europe and America. On account of lhe pure coldnir this winter, he is of opinion that cbolere, yellow fever, and the potaioe rot will not be so prevalent during the present, as in former years.
