WfcBSTERfe QUAKTO DICTIONARY, The entire work Unabridged, 1456 vanes, Crown Quarter, Six Dollars. Published by

G. fc. C. Merriam, Springfield, Mnsi.,STATE PURCHASES. The state of New York has placed 10.000 copies of Webster's Unabridged in as many of her public schools.

Massachusetts has in like manner, supplied 3243 of hef schools—nearly all. Wisconsin, over 3000—every school. •'"r

New Jersey has providod for all her schools. More than ten times as mony are sold of Webster's Dictionaries, as of any other series in this country.

At least four fifths of all the School-Books published tn this country own Webster as jheir standard. and of the remnindcr few acknowledge any standard. I

Webster'* School Dictionaries. sit "Webber's Dictionary. University Edition. Webster'^ Academic Dictionary. •, Welister's H'ifrh School Dictionary/Webster's Primary School-Dictionary.

Published by

MA SOW BROTHERS*, New York. The. publishers of Webster's Dictionaries desire rcspoctfully to invite the attention of teachers, Ktudcntu, committees and parent*. particularly to the larercstand most recently issued of these works, viz: Webster's «?-.

Academic School Dictionary. From tlie hearty approval of this work by nil teachers who have tested it, by actual use. it is bcliovod its peculiar excellences need only to be tinderstool to secure its general adoption in nil our hiph schools. -The following are some of it* prominent features ,1. Its excellence of definitions. The superiority nf Webster, as a dofiner, to overy other English lexicographer, is almost universally conceded.— The power of giving a truthful definition of a •word,"by describing accurately its meaning/eminently belonged to Webster and this is the important feature of any Dictionary. 2. In Orthography, its system is that to which four-fifths of-all-the school hooks of the country conform. 3. In Pronunciation it avoids the affected modes of the English stage, and as l'rof. Goodrich remurks, "exhibits the actual pronouneiatiou of our language in England as accurately aiul coinplctoly ns any single Dictionary which has ever oven published." 4. l'ronounciation of Greek, Latin, and Scripture Proper names.' These vocahulnrics arc very oopiou*. and arc accompanied with appropriate

Kules for l'ronounciation. ft. l'ronounciation of .Modern Geographical names: a full voyabularlv, with Rules. 5. Proverbs and Phrases from the Latin, frcijuently oeeurintr in English hooks and in converfntiou rendered into Engli.-h. 7. Words' and Phrases from the French, with! "English translations. 8. Proverbs and Phrases from the Italian,! Spanish and (ireek. I

Mottoes of the several L'nitod States, vitli translations. 1'. |,ist of abbieviations used hi printing and writing-- very full. 11. A concise account of Heathen Deities, lie- I roes. itc.

To aiil the pupil, the irregular plurals of nouns arc given, with the preterites and perfect partiripies of irremilar verb?. The derivations of words are frequently traced. As an aid to pronunciation, tlie words arc carefully divided into syllables.— 'The vocabuhuly is very copious, more so than in hiiv similar work: it contains all the important words of our language, in connection with those '\act and comiirehensi vo definitions for which Dr. Webster's works are so much distinguished. No pains have been spared to make this work suited to the important placc which it is designed to oc•cunv in the Schools and colleges of our country.

Webster's Academic School Dictionary, described above, contains -MO pages of a beautiful small *{Uiiito form, which, while it admits of three columns. and so of a great amount of matter, at. the snme time renders the volume most convenient and portable to the scholar.

This ork is believed, a (fords the best hand book for the pupil who needs to consult frequently an nuthoritatie Knglish Dictionary, anywhere to bo found. As such, we invite to its examination.
