A RHORT POLITTIKLE SERMIXT.

Mr

BRKETHIIIXO, I

will take for my text

ihe fame which was preached unto by mv brolhelf, at Brandon, Mississippi, of which you all have doubtless herd: "And he played on a harp of a thou-.sani strings— sperrits of just men made perfic."

My breethren, there is as many strings t* politix as there is to a lyre—an a good many liars to eeny most erery string then there aint bat one on 'em all that rings out the music of the union to which every true patriot ought to keep step—fur "he played on a harp of a thousand strings aperriU of just men made perfic."

Fust thae's the KNOW NOTHIN-' His name expresses the amount of his informatioa, but it don't convey an idee of his resources. He's the most extraordinary animal in the show—he is fur and against a variety of topics he's temperance and he drinks—he's fur and aginst fusion—he's an abolitionist and he aint an abolitionist—he's here and he's thar—and he will be no whare in November—fur "he played on a harp of a thousand strings—sperrits er just men made perfic."

Thea thais the polittikle cobbler, goin' round like a roaring green bay Jackass seekin* where he may humbug somebody. He's all the colors of the rainbow], and more changeable then the Camelia Joponniky. He is a whig and anti-whig—aknow aothin' an' anti-know nothin'—for furriners and agin furriners—fur every boddy and agin every boddy, but principally a longheeled, woolly-headed, rantin', ravin' niggerist and abolitionist and disunionist—fur he "played on a harp of a thousand strings —sperrits of just men made perfic."

Then tbar's the straightrout whig—a respectable sort of a character in contrast with

^the perceding who represents the fusionist. He don't want to see the Union destroyed, but he knows he can't help it if he runs on bis own hook, and that he'd better run wid 4er machine that's bound to be ahead and -wash the other tubs. He plays on a hnrp of a single string, but his execution is imperfect.

Then thar's the liberal and the genuine •old fashioned democrat. They don't go whirling round in circumbendibuses—they «int afraid to speak right out in meetin'— ihey aint afraid of nobody nor nothin'.--They carry their Union flag afloat—the hunting all kivered o'er with stars and •atripes—glorious and victorious because its 'the banner of the Union.

They go for personal freedom—for popular rights—for justice to all men and all parts of the country—for light instead er darkness—for open discussion instead of midnight cabal—for self-government and not for oligarchy and they go in to win, for their instrument is tuned with

tfeelin' though its made of

wood—

*nd they play on a harp of a mou-sand •strings, and every string an honest principle.—[Boston Post.

HEKOKHOF A BOY AT THE CAPTURE OF THE ilEDAX.

The following is an extract fom a letter of an officer of the Light Division: "Sevastopol, Sept., 18. By the way, I must give you the history, ir. a few hours in the life of a hero, and depend upon it a future great man, if he-lives. He is in the next regiment to us, and I have the details from a wounded sergeant of ours, who lay next him durig the day and night of the 8th.— I allude to young Dunham Massey, of the 19th—I believe the youngest officer of the army. He is now known as "Redan Mas«y," for there are three of the same name in the regiment. The noble boy, in the absence of his cousin, led the Grenadier Company, and was about the first man in the corps to jump into the ditch of the Redan, waving his sword and calling on his men, •who stood by him, till, left for nearly two hours without support, and seized by a fear of being blown up, they retired. Young Massy borne along, endeavored to disengage from the crowd, and stood almost alone, facing around frequently to the batteries, with head erect, and with a calm, proud, disdainful eye. Hundreds of shots were fired at him, and at last, when leading and climbing the ditch, he was struck and his thigh broken. Being the last, he was, of course, left there. Now, listen to this.— The wounded around were groaning, and some even loudly crying out! A voice called out faintly, loudly afterwards, "Are you Queen Victoria's soldiers?" Some voices answered, "I am! I am!" "Then," said the gallant boy, "let us not shame ourselves let us show the Russians that pain, as well as fight like men." There was a silence as of death, and more than once he had it renewed by similar appeals. The unquailing spirit of that beardless boy, ruled all around him. As evening come on the Russians crept out of the Redan and plundered some of the wounded, at the same time showing kindness, and in some cases giving water. Men, with bayonets fixed, frequently come over the body of young Massy. One fellow took away his haversack. Some times he feigned death. At other times the pain of his wounds would not permit him. A Russian officer, with drawn sword, come to him, and endeavord to disengage the sword which the young hero still grasped. Seeing that resistance was in vain he gave it up. The Russian smiled gently and compassionately on him, facinated probably by his youth, and by the bold, unfaltering glance which met his.— When the works of the Redan were blown up in the night by the retreating Russians, the$oor boy had his right leg fearfully crushed by a falling stone. He was found in the morning by some Highlanders, and brought to his regiment almost dead from loss of blood. Great was the joy of all at seeing him, as he was about to be returned as "killed" or "missing." "Dangerously wounded" was substituted, but he is now doing well." 4-^

PARTY NAMES.

It is curious to trace the history of party namc9 in this country. The Democratic party has never changed its name. From the origin of the government, it has steadily held its own primitive designation. Its enemies have often attempted to fasten on it some odious title, but have never yet succeeded.

But the party opposed to the Democracy has changed its name so often that it is difficult to keep posted up in the changes. In the contest between General Jackson and grr\r\

John Quincy Adams, the opponents of the tlUU

Democracy chose to be called National Republicans. Under Jackson's administration assumed the name of Whigs. One year ago they gloried in the name of the Fusion party. Now they are attempting to assume the name Republican. The next name will probably be the Abolition party. No matter what name they assume, they will hardly make it long respectable. The only name ever rendered respectable was that of Whig. The old Whig party was an honorable and highly respectable party. It numbered among its advocates many of the ablest and best men of the nation, or, indeed, of the age but the party seems now disbanded, and the most worthy members of it are wheeling into the Democratic ranks. The Democratic party never stood so well as now, We have god rid of all the unreliable, and have received accessions from the disbanded Whigs of the choicest and most substantial members. We have really made some very good exchanges.— State Sentinel.

The proprietor distinctly claims these extraordinary results from its use: It will protect any resident or traveller, even in the most sickly or swampy localities from any ague or bilious disease whatever, or nny injury from constantly inhaling Malaria or Miasma.

It will instantly check the ague in persons who have suffered for any length of time, from ONE DAY to TWENTY TEAKS, so that the}- need never have ANOTHER CHILL, by continuing its use according to directions.
