We copy the following from a late number of the Liverpool Timet. Three monster shells have been landed on the arsenal wharf, at Woolwich from the Low Moor foundries, being each of the following dimensions: Diameter, 3 feet 9 inches weight, 1 ton cwt. They arc the first of a number of that species which had been ordered for the purpose of being dispatched toSebastopol for the reduction of that! fortress. An experimental gun has likewise been founded at Liverpool for projecting these enormous missiles, weighing no less than 20 tons.

men can assemble, and any mechanic who can pay the fee of one dollar per annum, will here have society and music, even objects of beauty about him. It is hoped, eventually, to sprinkle the walls with picture, and to place there statuary and cast*, and works of art. Another room is furnished with a library and newspapers and querterlies, where the laborer can spend his evenings in quiet reading. The lower saloon is a public coffee and ice-cream saloon, nothing being allowed in the whole building which can intoxicate.

Living."—It is

a favorite saying among indolent people that the world owes them a living—and many honest men, blinded by sophistry, give their assent to the doctrine. The truth is, the world owes to every man a chance to earn a living but there are as many degrees of difference between this doctrine and the other, as there are between the morality of Socrates and Epicurus. To deprive a man of the means of living, is to compel him to beg or steal—but to permit him to eat the bread others earned, is to declare labor dishonorable, and idleness a mark of distinction. The world owes a living to those who are unable to earn it for themselves but every able bodied man owes it to the world to earn his own living.— CI. Leader.

Royal Beauty.—Kendall,

of the New Orleans Picayune, writes home that the ladies in Waiting upon Victoria at Paris, were "a distressingly homely yet." nor does the profane Republican treat royalty any better. That fell spirit would be crushed whenever it was ^brought in collission with the federal government in Massachusetts. The people there would not not involve the country in civil war and revolution in their opposition to slavery.
