A p.rty, a great political parly, jrlthowt

politics, is a novelty indeed. Before the

people of this counlry or Stat*1 enable it to rule them, they will desire, I fancy, a little more information on these subjects. We all, or almost all, of the free States, who reeognize the Constitution, think on slavery substantially alke. Before we make mea Presidents, and Governors, and Senators, and Judges, and diplomatists, we demand to •ee whatelse besides cheap, easy, unavoidable conformity to the sectional faith on that one topic, they can show for themselves.

We elect them not to deliver written lectures to assenting audiences of ladies and gentlemen to kindle the inflammable and exasperate the angry but to perform the duties of practical statesmanship, in the most complicated and delicate political system, and the hardest to administer in the

world. Let us, at least, then know their politics. Kept totally in the dark about these, we do know that this party of fusion is, in the truest of all censes, and the worst of all senses, a geogaphical party. What argument against it can we add to this? Such a party, like war, is to be made when necessary, it is like war, too, a tremendous and uncompensated evil. When it shall have become necessary the eternal separation will have begun. That time, that end, is not yet. Let us not hasten and not anticipate by so rash an innovation as this.

Parties in this country have helped, not delayed the slow and difficult growth of a consummated nationality. Our discussions have been sharp the contests for honor keen the disputes about principles and measures hot and prolonged. But it was in our country's majestic presence that we contended. It was from her that we solicited the

rize. Whoever lost or won, we loved her Our allies were everywhere.— There were no Alleghenies or Mississippi Rivers in our politics.

Such was the felicity of our condition, that the very dissensions that rent small republics in twain, welded and compacted the •astfabric of our own. Does he who would substitute for this form of conducting our civil differences a geographical party, completely understand his own work? Does he consider how vast an educational instrumentality the party life and influence compose? Does he forget how the public opinion of a people is created, and that when created it determines their history? All party organization tends towards faction.— This is its evil. But it is inseparable from free government. To choose his political connection aright is the most delicate and difficult duty of the citizen. We have made our choice and abide by it. We join ourselves to no party that docs not carry the flag and keep step to the music of the Union.

I am, gentlemen, vour fellow citizen, RUFUS CHOATE.

Foreign Demand for Breadstuffs. The London Times, in a recent article upon the probable demand for breadstuffs, to supply the deficiency in France and othcr countries, set down the amount at 40,000,000 bushels of wheat—all of which could be furnished from the surplus of this country. It was known at that time that the crops were short in Germany, but it was not supposed that foreign markets would have to be resorted to to make upthe deficiency. A report was brought b}' the last steamer to New York, however, that the Prussian Government has sent out orders and credits for the purchase of breadstuffs to a very large amount. The deficiency of the crops in the Prussian dominions is reported to have caused alarm to the Government.

The probability is, therefore, that much more than 40,000,000 bushels will be required to satisfy the entire foreign demand, the larger portion of which will have to be drawn from this country. Indeed we have little doubt that the United States and Canada together could furnish twice forty milions of bushels, and still leave an abundant supply of food for their inhabitants. 7

We have already stated that the Government of France has made extraordinary exertions to meet the emergency. Not only has the duty upon foreign grain been remitted, but a premium has been offered upon gold, in order to check the alarming drain from the Bank of France, which has been caused by the flow of specie to the Crimea, and the necessary use of it for the purchase of breadstuffs.

FOREIGNERS KNOW NOTHINGS. One of the most remarkable things in the history of the Know Nothing mania, is the fact that we occasionally find a foreigner, or a person of recent foreign extraction enrolled under the banner of Sam and we find at the Fusion Convention, of the 13th of July, one blubber-headed Dutchman carrying a banner inscribed "we came to lire, not to rule." He was too much an object of loathing and disgust for any comment. But there is a class of persons, who although not born in "Faderlandt" or "ould Ireland," yet they are weak and foolish enough to be ashamed of the fact that their parents or grand-parents came from a foreign country, and are ambitious of the distinction of boingpure "American stock." Accordingly we find them joining in the hue and cry against the "red-mouth-ed Irish," and the "lop.eared Dutch."— What cowardly, mean and contemptible truckling to popular prejudice! We know some such Know Nothings, the most virulent, abusive and lying of all Sam's traitorous hosts, whose grand-parents could not spenk a word of English, and. who still retain the German prefix, "Van," to their

names—that will not get sourkrout worked out of their veins tor three venerations vet three generations yet to come, and yet they are among the meanest and mosl detestibie Know Nothings.— To the ordinary Know Nothing sins of intolerance and bigotry, they add that of trea-
