We re indebted to tn Louisville Journal for the following good story:
r%
GOSGHKSSIOJ?AL MORALITY.
We were in
finitely amused three or four weeks ago by a practical joke in Washington City upon a number of the nice men of Congress. It was too good 10
be left unpublished.
A couple of merry fellows one of them a distinguished member of Congress from a Southern State, and the other a distinguished ex-editor from Kentucky, concocted a letter purporting to be addressed by a young lady to a very tine-looking gentleman. It was got up in first-rate style. The pretended young lady set forth therein that she had several times seen the gentleman she was addressing, that she was fascinated by his fine face and manly form, that her heart was deeply touched by all she saw and heard of him, that she
must
her
heait. The two wags had between thirty and forty copies of this letter written by a fetoale friend of theirs, and they sent these Copies to between thirty and forty members of Congress, selecting those of course who were known to entertain a very exalted Opinion of their own personal fascinations.
Everything being thus arranged, the two .jokers called upon us and another young gentleman, explained what they had done, and invited us to get into their carriage, ride with them to the point of assignation, and see the sights. We unhesitatingly consented, and we saw sights sure enough.— Riding upon the designated square, we beheld the whole of the thirty or forty members, Northern men and Sourthern men, Whigs, Democrats, and Know Nothings, walking to and fro, all gazing earnestly in every direction and at every female figure to discover the object of their anxious search.
We concluded, that, if more copies of the letter had been sent so members of the House of.Representatives, the House would have had to adjourn for the want of a quorum. -J& -i" •'IHJJE AND CRY."
The excitement occasioned by the flight of tho assassin Baker, who killed Poole, was felt around the whole country. At Bergen the people turned out and chased down a man who was Baker for certain—at Aruboy, the same zeal was displayed, and the counterpart of Baker was jugged, and the New York Police was telegraphed at Philadelphia, their Baker was Constabulary sent for. One of these Bakers turned out to be a drunken School master on a spree, another a peddler of lottery tickets, and a third an itinerant preacher. If they keep on at this rate, they will soon have a "Baker's dozen."
It is suggested that all Napoleon's
preparations are making for a visit, not to the Crimea, but to Berlin that the allies have abandoned all hope of taking Scbastopol, or at least have concluded that it will •cost a great deal more to take the place than it is worth, and that they will march through Prussia, if she consents, and over her, if she resists into Poland. The Crimean destination, and the rumored opposition of the British cabinet, is deemed merely a ruse to ward off suspicion until the result of the Vienna conference is disclosed.
The election for members of the Legislature in Kansas, took place yesterday.
