LATER FROM SAN FRANCISCO.

CHEAT FINANCIAL PANIC.

NZW YORK, March 19.

The steamer Northern Light arrived off Sandy Hook last evening reached her dock this morning. She has San Francisco dates of 26th of February brought down to S-m Juan by the Uncle Sara. She brings 262 passengers and $92,000 in gold dust. 'The news is highly important.

Business was entirely prostrated by the suspension of five banking houses. W~ The newa'of Page & Bacon's difficulties was received at San Francisco on the 17tb, causing a great run on that house. They met the run and paid half a million of dollars. A meeting of merchants and bankers who declared the house sound restored confidence and afterwards matters seemed to wear a better aspect.

On the 22d however, Page, Bacon & Co., suspended, followed on the 23d by Adams «Sc Co., Wells, Fargo & Co., Robinson Co., and Wright's Miners Deposits. The excitement was intense. Adams & Co. closed all their branches without paying a dollar except in San Francisco, where on the 22d they stood a run of §200,000.

Wells, Fargo & Co. closed, but their country branches paid as long as their com lasted and were still paying as fast as coin could be obtained in exchange for dust and bars. The house announced that they would resume in San Francisco on the 26th.

NOTE.—John Buttcrficld, ice President and Superintendent of the American Express Co., assures us that the suspension of Wells, Fargo & Co., in California, does not affecttho American Express Co. in any way.

It was feared that Adams Co., could Hot resume under 60 days, if at all. Pa»e, Bacon fe Co. would probably resume in a few days, depositors having granted them lime on 6400,000. Their assets were large.

The heavy failures caused the detention of the steamer until the 2Gth. Rumors were current of heavy failures among the merchants, but we have nothing authentic on this head. Owing to the scarcity of water, but little gold had been taken from the mines, but heavy rains commenced falling on the 25th, and still coutinucd when the steamer left.

No election of a U. S. Senator had taken place yet, the convention having adjourned eine die on the 16th, by a vote of 63 to 44. Those voting in the minority were principally the friends of Mr. Gwin.

The news from Kerr River is of an exciting character. The miners are said to average from ton to twenty dollars per day.

Steamers fur San Pedro, tlie nearest point of disembarkation for the miners, were going crowded with passengers.

On the 18th the St. Charles Hotel and Hillraan's Hotel io Sau Francisco were destroyed by fire. Loss 850,000

In Nevada, 16 houses were destroyed by fire on the 16th, and in Stockton 25 houses also on the 21st.

Indian troubles appear to he on the increase. Some 10 white men and about 70 Indians have been killed.

The Mar:posa gold mining concern had been sued by the rhcriff. Rodman Buckus, indicted for the murder of Fred. Odman, had been found guilty of manslaughter.

Washington's birth day was celebrated! ia San Francisco by a fireman's parade and other ceremonies.

Owing to the monetary difficulties the recently arrived ships are not discharging, The steamer Oregon from Panama and the Sierra Nevada from San Juan had arrived up.

The Oregon Legislature adjourned February 1st. The Washington Legislature had made Olympia thecapitol of the territory.

A letter from the house of Page, Bacon & Co. stated they would certainly resume on the 1st of March in San Francisco and all their branches.

Sandwich Island dates are to Feb. 3d but there is no news. The U. S. ship Portsmouth arrived at Tabnti—all well and would sail direct for the United States.

Sidney, Australia, dates to the 20th December had reached San Francisco. The riot at Balorat growing otit of the miners' tax of which we previously had the comment, resulted in a conflict between the troops and miners, in which 12 miners and 22 of the troops were killed.

The principal consignees of the specie by the Northern Light arc: A.Rich §20,000, C. Morgan $12,000, Ross, Falconer Co. S10.0G0, W. Selligman Co. 810,000. Wells. Fargo ifc Co. $50,000, Baker & Merrill, of Boston, 89,500.

In Central America Chinor is still succeeding, having taken all the towns occupied by the revolutionists except seven.

At San Juan the people were anxiously looking for Col. Kinney and his party.— The British war steamer Devastation was i- in the harbor. The U. S. steamer Fulton left for Jamaica on the 18th all well.

In the San Francisco market, business was •ery dull." Quotations exhibit no change. Gallijas and Haxall flour sold at §15. L'ird 14£@15. Hams 19, clear pork 21. I

M*AJJ FOLKS.—The New York J//rrorj thus discourses upon mean folks, a class not confined exclusively to Gotham: ••An honest person, receiving the paper without ordering it, will either inform the office of tho error, or pay the carricr for serving it buta mean man will let the paperrun on and then repudiate the bill. We do not want any subscribers on our list who are not both able and willing to pay for the paper. The man who will cheat the poor carrier who has walked miles every day to deliver him the paper, through all sorts of weather, is a heartless wretch, who deserves to have the essence of all the curses ever printed, carred upon his tombstone."

(ErThe Vincennes Courant says much of the stock of that county is dying off in consequence of the scarcity of food* One fsraer JIM lost forty head of hogs.

THE REMAINS OF EMM.l-MOOBE FOUND. ROCHESTER, March 19. The body of Emma Moore, whose mysterious disappearance caused such excitement some months ago, was found yesterday, under the ice, in the mill-race by a boy who was drawing water. It was identified by the ear-rings and bonnet.

NEW AND DANGEROUS COUNTERFEIT.—Dr. White exhibited to us yesterday a new and dangerous counterfeit on the Southern Bank of Ky., of the denomination of So. It was numbered 1,242, letter C, dated 8th June, 1853, and payable at Hickman. It is weli executed, and calculated to deceive, but a close observer will detect defects in the engraving. The eyes of the woman and the horse are badly done. Look out for it.— Louisville Courier.

The Detroit Democrat and Enquirer says that the apple crop in that vicinity promises to be abundant.

Married—On Thursday the loth inst., bv Rev. Joseph G. fjvmmes. Rev. M. Symmos, of Hamilton, O., and Miis Mary J. Dunn, of this place.

Accompanying the above notieo, was a bountiful supply of cake.
