CENTRAL COMMITTEE.

INDIAN BATTLES.

The Minnesota <Democrat>gives an account of a bloody battle between the Sioux and a war party of the Chippewas, on the plains above the Yellow Medicine river, on the 3d inst. The Sioux it is said were victorious. They claim to have killed twenty eight Chippewas, without losing a single man, though several were severely wounded. They surprised the Chippewas by lying in wait in the tall grass on the bank of a stream, and after about half had got across they commenced the attack. Twelve or fifteen Chippewas fell at the first fire. The survivors, numbering some one hundred and fifty attempted to make a stand, but they fought to a great disadvantage and were soon obliged to seek safety in flight. It appears that the Chippewas had unaccountably allowed some of their women and children to accompany the expedition and many of these fell easy victims to the enemy.

A beautiful young squaw was taken captive by a young brave, who it is said, has been captivated by her. The excitement and exultation over this victory is said to be intense among the Sioux's all along the Upper Minnesota. -----

SINGULAR.—An Irishman was engaged in digging a well in Hamburg Eric Co. New York, and after having reached the depth of twenty feet he came to a layer of slate through which he struck his pick, when all at once, and with a loud noise like thunder, sufficiently loud to be distinctly heard all over the neighborhood, a stream of mingled gass and water burst through the orifice, instantly killing the unfortunate man, and filling the Well to the depth of ten or twelve feet with water. Gass still escapes profusely, and the water is in constant and violent motion, resembling a large cauldron of boiling fluid.

Ex -PRESIDENT FILLMORE, who has been absent since the death of his daughter returned to his residence in Buffalo, on Thursday last, accompanied by his son.— He has suffered extremely under the affliction of his successive bereavements. First his wife, then his only daughter, next his brother, taken from him in rapid succession seemed to destroy almost every bond of union in his family, and left him in doubt about his future domestic arrangements but he could feel satisfied nowhere but at home and he has returned with his son to his house in Buffalo.—Buffalo Commercial.

JE9" The Buffalo Express says that the receipts of flour and grain at that port, during the present season, are far in advance of last year. The largest amount yet delivered in one day is 400,000 bushels.

(£jr Wheat is selling in the Cincinnati marketat 81,40 and 81,45 per bushel*— Hay has advanced—quoted at Si2 00 per ton for prime baled.

The Hon. W. H. English was re

nominated for Congres, by the Democratic District Convention, at New Albany.

JtiT Not long since, an Eastern man,' while on his way to Boston, was stopped on the highway by a robber, and requested to hand over his money, or have his brains blown out. "Oh," said the travel ler, quietly, "blow away! blow away! it's better to go to Boston without brains than without monev."

HOSIE AND FOREIGN MARKETS. RETICTT Onici, SEPT. 2, ISM.' It will be noticod by our subjoined quotations that there is a material advance in the price of Wheat and Flour.. There is a briafe inquiry for Wheat by our dealers at the figures quoted and we credibly informed that private contract* are being daily made at higher figures The general impression is that Wheat will range high throughout the year, and but few sales of any magnitude have yet been made. The extreme drouth has rendered it certain that the corn crop will not be near an average one. The consequence of this is that but few of our farmers arc disposed to throw any of their old corn intd market at any price, none of them will sell at present -prices. Fresh Butter is almost out of the question. There is not half the amouift offered that is required for consumption by our citizens. All the Potatoes in rtiarkct are shipped from thenorth, and meet with ready sale. Our merchants are now receiving their fall stock of groceries and dry goods preparatory for a heavy trade.

Their purchases have been made with special regard to the wants of the trade, as to styles, qualities, and prices—and we can assure our friends that wc can sell a large portion of our stock at less prices than we have been able to heretofore. Our motto is to be undersold by none, and we will strictly adhere to it.

Our stock embraces a much greater variety than wc have heretofore kept, and we feel fully able to satisfy the demands of our friends. We are firmly of the opinion that the trade of Indiana would not only promote their interest and ours, but the interest of the community by patronizing us in preference to going to other citics where there is an effort making to break down our currenev.

Wisdom shall bow down to it, and the great of Vie earth, shall kneel before it." Never could this be said with more truth, than it now applies to this remedv for affections of the throat ana lungs. The exalted in learning and power, acknowledge its supremacy, wjiile both the little and the great can feel its benefits. The lib-eral-minded among those skilled to cure, are free to own its mastery over distempers which have bafled their art. Those of exalted stations are not ashamed to testify to its virtues, but deem it a dntv and a pleasure to thus hold out the lamp of their experience to their suffering fellow men.
