AL,?MO, February 25 h, 1054.
Pursuant to notice previously ijiven^ a. lnrge and enthusiastic meeting of the c'ki-i tons of Ripl'-y Towti'hip. assembled at Alamoon tlie 2~'h insl.. to tnke in!o consider.i-
tion the proprielv of a looting Resolutions *'r
manufacture of spirituous liquors by legal eftac'nient. The house was called fo order by Col. R. W. MCMACKIX. and the object of the nieetir.f fu11 set forth find explained, when on motion ol Ti. J. 1 isx Jud^e 1 Avion was called to the chair to preside over the deliberations of the meeting and \VM.
DFVMAN and TIIOMAS PPAHKS were elected as Vice Presidents, and WM. A. SWEARLN- (, EN as Secretary.
On motion of R. J. FINK Esq., a committee of four were appointed to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting. JOHN BIUTTON Esq., SAMHKL GILKEV, ANDREW J. SNYDER, and IMATIIIAS ELI.MOKE, were appointed said committee, who imrnediately retired to the discharge of their duty. and after an absence of half an hour, pror Rented the following preamble nnd resolutions, which weie ordered to be read, after which they were unanimously adopted.
the principles of neutrality on the subject of politics, and, rvhcrcas the different organizations of temperance assembled in convention at Indianapolis on the I lib of January, 1054, for ihc purpose of forming a more perfect union of said organizations, and vherras the Sons of Temperance formed a portion of said convention in Avhioh they adopted the resolution, wherein they publicly declare that no law will satisfy them that will not subject to confiscation and destruction, all liquors kept for illegal sale, thereby violating their obligations of neturalitv as taught in their constitution, thercreforo, riS J. Resolved, That the law governing us in relation to drinks, is one of the clearest with which we are endowed by our beneficent Creator, and every act of our Senators fir Representatives, to legislate on the subject, or everv attempt made to procure the passage of a l.uv prohibitingthe manufacture nnd sale of spirituous liquors, is an assumption of rights and an imposition on their constitution. 2. Rrs'ob'cd, That we will vole for no nvin who fears to come, forward to the rescue and pledge himself publicly before the people to vindicate his principles and oppose a prohibitory law. i.
Resolved,
The utmost good feeling prevailed throughout the meeting, and as the house voted for the adoption of the resolutions there was such a unity of feeling and sentiment that 1 he most casual observer in the (so called) temperance movements of the day could not help but see that they were fast hastening to that political grave that they themselves have dug.
