f3T By reference to an advertisement in to-day's paper, of the N. A. fc S. R. RCompany, it will be seen that the time of running has been changed. This arrangement affords travelers great facilities, as the passenger trains arc so arranged as to make direct connections with trains of the Indianapolis, and Lafayette railroad at Lafayette—and at Michigan City with the trains of the Michigan Central railroad to Chicago and the north-west and west, and for Detroit, connecting with steamers for Cleveland, Dunkirk and Buffalo, which run in connection with the different routes of

travel for Pittsburgh, New York, Albany,

and Boston.

The County Commissioners at their

jjy As the recent decision of our Supreme Court on tho subject of the liquor law, is one that excites a good deal of interest at this time, wc publish the closing paragraph of the opinion of the Court that all may understand the extent of the decision, and which is as follows: "As a license law the act is complete in itself, without the part relating to the town ship vote. So much as relates to that vote may be considered as stricken out and the liccnse issues on filing the requisite bond. Maize having sold without such license was properly convicted. He was bound at his peril to know the law in violation of which he assumed to act.'

Judgment affirmed with costs." In the cases that came before Judge Dooghcrty, of our Common Pleas Court, he took the same view of the law that was taken by the Supreme Court, and decided that the law was effectual against all persons, who had been retailing without license, but that any person who had obtained license, might retail, without regard to the vote of the townships.

Jt3T Dye's Bank Note Mirror, cautions thc public against a dangerous counterfeit on thc Rochester Bank of New ork, of the denomination of §10, letter A: vignette, male portrait and female each side of same, New York State arms on the left, and large at upper corner, large portrait on center of right end, and ten at upper and lower corncrs eagle between officers names.— Large quantities are now being offered in Cincinnati, and well calculated to deceive the signatures present a sameness, and thc work on the right end is imperfect, paper

inferior. Another dangerous counterfeit is said to be in general circulation in the northern part of OhhcH It purports to be a five dolhir on the Webster Bank, Boston the centre has a large oval vignette of Webster, (thc whole width of the bill,) rather coarsely executed: ou the left margin a monument or pillar cloud work coarse and scratchy signatures both in same hand writing.

The erratic and notable Lola, was at the last accounts quietly rusticating in her birdbox of a cottage at Grass Valley—spending her time in attending to the improvement of her garden, petting her parrot and poodle, and laming a grizzly.

JKT It appears as though thc Turkey and Russia difficulties have entirely been lost sight of and forgotten since the civil war excitement by the Eric people with the Railroad company. At the last accounts the mounted brick-bate had taken up a strong position on the Irfl dank of Fcwcnden's bariu

Cnnidiaii Flnnkeyism aad Abase. We have seen a good many disgraceful todayisras in Canadian Journals, but this paragraph beat3 them all. It is from the Kingston Whig. We should like to know how much the editor gets for selling his soul to the devil of British tyranny. II^» a man can stand op on this continent, within a Lhuusad miles of the United States, ana be guiltv of such servile slavishness, passes all

comprehension: "The impolicy of sparing the lives of great scoundrels, convicted of the most heinous of all crimes, treason and rebellion, is exemplified in the scandalous conduct of John Mitchel in New York. Had this villain been made to pay the penalty of his crimes, like other traitors, instead of enjoyinf the clemency of the British Goverment hewould not have lived to utter, in the city of New York, his blackguard abuse against the gracious Queen who mercifully spared his life, nor would his treasonable speeches have been republished in the Reform Journals of Canada."

S£T We see by our Exchanges, that a large meeting was recently held in the city of Chicago, which passed strong resolutions condemning the conduct and movements of the citizens of Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Chicago Press call upon sister towns and States to hold public meetings and express their indignation at such infamous and outrageous conduct. We quote: "We cannot longer submit to this mob outrage. It is a bold insurrection, and the

THE WHIG PARTY I\ CONGUESS. Thc whig party, in a political point of view, is perfectly powerless at Washington, and in fact is thoroughly defunct throughout thc Union it may occasionally manifest a kind of galvanized vitality in somo localities, where the great party of the Union is divided by sectional dissensions, as in New York, but this galvanized life only results in a few ineffectual kicks at its ene-

A party that can only demonstrate the fact that it is in being, by a faint cxhibiiion of its presence through an unhallowed coalition with abolitionists and secessionists, might as well "not to be" as "to be." Its real life has fled, and its departed ghost lif.a entered the body of a diseased bantling and helps to make up a loathsome monstrosity. If there be a whig party Hi Washington, it can only be seen in a base alliance with the avowed enemies of tho country. It possesses no independence, and represents no principle—it makes commerce of its favors, and traflic3 with corruption—it is found only in the company of political free-hooters and treason-mongers. Tho opposition to the Administration is decidedly insiiiiiilicant in any open collision it has attained but one point since the opening of Congress, and that was achieved by fk gtietilia surprise.
