ONE DAY LATER.—We have been com

paper one day later than our regular publication day on account of (he failures of the

mails. We do hope the mails will be more regular hereafter.

$-jj~ We notice large bills posted up at different places through town, announcing

the great and important fact, that a oneeyed circus is shortly to be exhibited in

Crawl'ordsville. One look at the bills is

sufficient to condemn the whole concern. This magnificent establishment will rival

OHIO.—The Whig?, Abolitionists, and

Maine Law fanatics combined, have met with an Orleans defeat in this glorious Em

pire State of the West. Col. Medill for Governor, and the entire Democratic ticket is elected by majorities ranging from 15,-

000 to 20,000. The Legislature is Demo

cratic, which elects a Senator in the place

of Chase, Abolitionists. Chase and Ilale are now b:th "outside of a healthy organization."

ELECTIONS.—The Democracy of Ohio have swept the State by an immense ma

jority. Medill is elected Governor by some

forty thousand majority, and the balance of the State ticket by little less. The Leg islature is largely Democratic.

Pennsylvania has also gone Democratic

by a large majority.

Johnson, dem., is elected Governor by a small majority.

Tin .HAILS! Tin MAILS!! What is got into the mail--, and why isit

that we have for the last three weeks been receiving only three mails a week from the

east, when we should have a regular daily

mail? We understand it is the neglect of the person who is employed to deliver the

mails at the cars. This matter should be seen loo and that immediately. The mails

are ready at the post office at Lafayette,

any time when called lor—but for the mere negligence of a "buss-man," we arc deprived of our mads. Tighten up the screws Mr Brown.

merited rebuke. Her re- and we have only in history the names of

them in triumph or victory, and evert of them, we moderns know more than did their distant co'emporaries. Now-a-dflys, accidents make men immortal. No matter? how humble they may be, those by whose good fortune, or by whose ill fortune, a moral or political question of importance is. started, become, upon the instant, known everywhere that civilized people are fc«rd. Who was Martin Koszta a year ago?—a most obscure man. An accident, which, he no doubt thought a great misfortune, has given him a place in history, and his has become one of the immortal names that were not born to die. The Koszta affair will be talked about and written about when the name of the Ministers and State, Secretaries who wrote diplomatic notes of ponderous volume pro and con in regard to it, shall have been forgotten. These aro changeful times in which we live!—Cincinnati Columbian.

A DISGUSTING MONSTKR.—Dr. Grant, visiting Mosul, thus describes Shereef Pacha, the successor of Mohammed Pacha:

He is, I believe, the most hideous man I ever saw .lour feet high, lame, crooked, with only one eye, one car, and half a nose. His lace too is most horribly scarred with tmall-pox. His soul is the fit inhabitant of such a body. He is a perfect compound of every bad property—cruelty, craftiness, greediness and lust. He cuts ofl" heads, strangles people, throws others into the river generally for the sake of their property sometimes, as it would seem, merely for fun. I myself saw him firing bombs among the people to enjoy their fright.— Besides, this horrid monster, when he hears of girls to his liking in any family, sends his kavasses to take them into his harem. The place would be deserted, but he has walled up some of the gates, and posted soldiers at the others, to prevent the people escaping from his clutches.

OH, MUKDKR, WHAT A TIME!—An exchange paper states, that during the pasG summer, at a town on the banks of the Susquehannah, the heat had been overpowering all day, and, night being come numbers of people of both sexes sought coolness in the waters of that beautiful stream. A terrible thunder storm arose whilst the river was populated with bathers, and then commenced a general mnve quip cut. The wind bore away the clothing in every direction, and every one to gain his or her own habiliments, joined in an impetuous race, clad in a single garment. This on» •where he had leit his coat found only a corset, and where the young giyl sought her fresh toilette and her sweet toUe boni:vt, she discovered a pair of pantaloons or a sack. Many were obliged t& enter the town in the most bizarre costume, and some crowd even without any. The next raornin" the

clothes that had been collected were divided as equitably as possible.

J???' Rose Partington says she never cared much about grand spectacles, or other sights but there were two thing sha would like to have seen—the inoculation of I rank Pierce, and the corporation of Queen Victoi ia.
