A iR A iTTcci r:*T. PROVIDENCE, R. I., Aug. 12.

A frightful railroad murder^took place on the Providence and Worcester Railroad, about 8 o'clock, this morning.

The collision occurred between the regular up train and excursion train from Wieting'.s. A*

The excursion train was out of time, and met the up train at Valley Falls. The train coming down suffered most, the cars being driven together, two of them being completely interlocked.

The number of persons killed is fourteen, as far as ascertained, and probably three times that number are seriously injured, besides a very large number bruised and slightly wounded.

Ti up-train received but little damage, and no person in that train was injured to speak of.

The Excursion Train consisted of six long passenger cars densely crowded. Great excitement prevails, and it is difficult, to get particulars.

Mr. Kinney, Pastor of the Grace Church, Providence, is among the dead. Mr. South wick, Superintendent of the road, is seriously injured.

I am going to the scene of disaster, and will send full particulars.

SECOND DISPATCH.

The collision occurred at a sharp curve beyond Central Falls the down train was behind time, and proceeding at the rate of 40 miles an hour to reach the switch, from which there is a double track to Providence.

Jn one minute the train would have reached the switch, the up train waited the usual time at PawUicket, and then having the right to the road, proceeded at a slow rate around the curve.

KKNON, I ND., August 1

Frederick Harmes, an honest, hard-work-ing German, was murdered on the highway in the suburbs of town, about dark last evening. Patrick McGinna and three others were arrested and lodged in jail. Their examination takes place before the Mayor at 1 o'clock. A mob is organizing in the Court House Square, to attack and demolish the groceries.

NEW ORLEANS, August 12.

The steamer Texas arrived yesterday from Vera Cruz, with Mexican dates to the 3d.

She brings Major Mordccai, with the Gardner commissioners. The Diaro ufiicially and explicitly contradicts the report of the alliance between Mexico, Spain, and England, for the protection of Cuba.

The President decrces that the custom duties of Campeachy, Sisal, and Carmen remain the same as fixed in 1845.

The Indians are ravaging the Durango proprietors. The minister of finance hypothecated the church property fur a loan of $ 17,000,000.

The total deaths on Thursday amounted to 217, including 200 of yellow fever. Tot.il on Friday 210, including 135 of vellow lever.

PHILADELPHIA, August 13.

Two more deaths have resulted from the Providence railroad disaster—one of them a boy named Goldthwait, and the other a man named Stewart Winslow, of Whitneyville.

The heat is intense in Boston, New York, and this

eiLy,

and many deaths have occur

red from sun-stroke. The thermometer, at three o'clock this afternoon, stood at 05 in the shade.

NEW YORK, August 15.

The heat in this city yesterday was frightful. The thermometer raised to 102 in the shade. Ninety deaths by heat were reported by the coroner.

BOSTON, August 15.

The most violent storm, thunder nnd lightning, that ever visited this city occurred last night. At Germantown the Baptist parsonage house was struck by lightning, and the wife of the llev. Mr. Russell was instantly killed. A child in her arms escaped uninjured. At Groveland, the house of William Fowler was struck, and himself and wife knocked senseless. Lawrence and Haverhill were also injured.

LOUISVILLE, August 15.

Johnson, Dem., for Governor of Tennessee, was elected by about 2,000 majority. The Congressional delegation stands five to five. Stanton was elected in Memphis district by six majority over Yerger, Whig. -----

INDEPENDENCE, August 13.

Returned Californians give the following account of a battle between the Sioux, aided by the Cheyennes, 5,000 strong, and the Pawnees, aided by Iowas, Sacks [sic], Pottawottamies, numbering about 3,000. Fight lasted all day. The killed on both sides five or six hundred

The battle took place within fifty miles of Fort Kearney. Had not the Pottawottamies interferred the Pawnees would have been whipped. A person in from Fort

Laramie says, the above account is exaggerated but that a great demonstration had been made. -----

CUCUMBERS AXD MILK.—A case of sickness, says the Richmond Enquirer, insulting from eating cucumbers and drinking milk at the same meal, came near proving fatal a few days ago, iu that city. A young lady, disregarding a caution of some" older heads at the table, partook of these articles of food, and was shortly after seized with sickness of a distressing and dangerous character. The discordant character of cuoumbcrs and milk, renders them dangerous to be iudulged in at the same time.— Wo state these facts for the benefit of a very numerous class of persons, who are prone to indulge their appetites, let the danger be what it may.
