THE COUNTRY.

The editor of the New York Eiprest, in that paper of the 21st instant, is thus eloquent on the beauties of the country, as contrasted with the hot bricks and dust of the town: "The country was never looking more gloriously than it now does. We never so reali.zing]y felt the force of the inspired poet's bold metaphors—of the valleys laughing and singing, of the hills clapping their hands for joy—than during one of our recent excursions into the interior counties of our State. To watch tiie undulations of the hill sides, each presenting diverse tinted crop to the genial rays of the fructifying sun to look down into the green valleys lying at the base of the uplands, the abodes of .thrift, of health, of contentment, and of beauty to view the mountain tops and slopes covered with forests, which seem to hold forth their myriad masses of foliage to temper the heat of the sun, or to form a barrier to the tempest, as either too rudely threaten the harvest growing beneath them to sit and listen to the ripple and brawl of the now sunny, now shady rivulet, as by road-side or in mid-forest it goes on its sparkling and devious way to lie upon one's back and watch the changes of the clouJ-forms of which he catches a chequercd glimpse beyond the tree-tops to sail upon the lake, and therein to wet a line, and perchance to fill a creel to stand in sunshine above a thunder-cloud upon Catskill, and see the valley beneath receiving its genial influences to listen to the delicious music of the song birds, or the awful roar of the cataract. These are pleasures and delights worth sighing for in the midst of these heated walls of brick and stone, these crowded granite-paved streets, full of inodorous, unpalatable purlieu sand environs."
