WORK AND PI,AY.

Tn all forms of physical employment, except play, the Yankees arc expert.—The English as a nation work harder and give more hours to labor, but then they play more and a great deal better. Games in New England are interdicted, not so much by law and custom as by a general disin: elination to practise them. The Yankee leels that he has '-no time" for fun, and neglects when young to learn the art of amusement. The result is that when he comes to have leisure—which sometimes happens—he docs not know what to do with it, and suffers either in body or mind, or both, for the want of proper means of diversion. For the lack of games lie sometimes takes to "oamint'" and cultivates

expensive vices instead of manly sports, for which he has no relish because they were not made attractive to him in his youth.

plav too little. The institution among us of well ordered amusements in open air, patronized by the rich, the industrious, and the virtuous, would greatly improve the physical stamina of the man, and by hereditary transmission of the woman too, in couple of generations, besides serving as a strong check to effeminate vices. At present we work so much and play so little as fairly to justify the facetious remark of a late English writer, that "the Yankees have no relaxation save when they take cathartics."—Boston Post.

It is often said of US that WC work too much, I signed either for Postage or Hooks, arc requested but it is nearer the truth to say that we It0

This Office has now transacted business for more than a quarter of a century, aiuf insured real and personal property against loss by Fire and Water to the vaffie of more than

TWO HUNDRED MILLIONS OF

IN TIIE "WESTERN COUNTRY. Several Thousand Losses have been incurred upon the above risks, all of which have been adjusted at the

General Agency Office

At Cincinnati r.nd paid with the utmost promptitude according to the conditions of the Policy, as inav be seen by the receipts of the several claimants on file.

This Company bases its operations upon such a perfected plan of cash premiums, well scattered ri.-iks and long experience

estimating hazards, that

the interests of all concerned are protected. The Company receives from almost innumerable sources and in small sums, a large annual deposit. Its Annual Premiums and Capital Stock Exceeft SI,000,000!

From this fund, held as a public trust losses are paid. To secure for the public and the Company a permanent ability to meet every fair demand. allerroneous or fraudulent claims are of course rejected. This is the only plan of Insurance which can long deserve the public confidence, and the undersigned agent confidently invites his friends to secure themselves at his Agency, against loss by

Fire, or the Perils ofiVaviga-

tlOBQ.

The advantages of this contract need scarcely be urged upon wealthy men, or merchants, for they rarely neglect it. and if they do, fires leave them other resources. It is especially valuable to laboring men, mechanics and others of moderate means— who. perhaps. hive little else than a home and its contents in the world.

These should never neglect to insure a fire that may visit them at any hour would leave them homeless. and with no capital but their labor to begin again the struggle of life, and years of toil and watching must pass before they can regain what they have lost, if indeed it is ever done. To such, insurance is a duty. If the individual is worth little, the expense, is less if lie owns much property, still, the expense is trilling, and by investing a few dollars he is safe. If he is overtaken by misfortnne and his all laid in ashes, he receives a recompense in cash capital equal to bis loss, and may soon restore wh.it has been destroyed.

BATHING*"MACHINE,

BATHING, its'necessity and expediency from the structure and the functions of the skin, the cuticle is cast off in minute powdry scales, many of which are retained upon the sur&ce bv the pressurs of clothing, these mingle with the oily saline products of the skin, and form a thin crnst.— Tliia crnst. on account of its adhesiveness, collects particles of dnst- and soot from the atmosphere, and particles of foreign matter from our dress, so tliat. the- course of the day, the whole body becomes coated with impurities. If this coating remains it becomes thick and established upon- the skin, and will produce the following effects:

First, the pores will be obstructed, consequently perspiration impeded, and the influence of the skin as an c-xertive entirely prevented, and produces the following diseases:—Indigestion. Biliiousness, Ascidity, a sense of oppression in the pit of the stomach, depression of the spirit. Heaviiu s. (..'old hands and Feet. Numbness of the limbs, and other parts. Vertigo Nan-sea. Difficulty of Respiration. Stupor. Irritability. Drowsiness. Debility, Extreme Languor and Exhaustion. Restlessness.^ Costiveness. Head-ache. Extreme Nervous Agitation, Palpitation of the Heart, an Incapacity for the slightest exercise, dull, heavy pain and sense of weight in the Head, a temporary loss of memory, a sense of Crustness, Pcrlse less freqnent and more feeble than usual. Despondency, Emaciation, ana extreme Debility. A film of foreign substance on the .Ain will inevitably become the seat of deliterious infectious vaporj. This is one reason why filthy persons_contract infectious diseases more frequently than individuals of more cleanly habits. Bathing is useful to promote cleanliness.

This both which the undersigned have the right to manufacture and sell is one of the most convenient imaginable, and can be used equally well for warm or cold weather for bathing, and only takes one bucket of water to supply it for any length of time. Tile water is poured into the lower part of the Bath the person bathing stands upon a platform above the water, and by a slight movement of the body, throwing the weight alternately from one foot to the other, the water is forced up into the sprinkler, from which it conies down on the bather with mrich force, the water passing into the pump at the fulcrum, gives great power to the double-act-ing force pump placed under the feet of the batlier, causing the water to shower down with any desired force indeed the bather lias it in liis power to produce a violent shock or gentle sprinkle by his own action. One bucket of water will answer every purpose, (as one washbowl answers to wash ones face) the same water being thrown over the bather repeatedly in a constant current but it is so arranged that where it is not desirable to use the water more than once, it can be replaced with fresh water, with very little trouble. These Baths are warranted to be'dnrable in every particular. Persons desiring Baths, who live at a distance can be supplied immediately, by sending their address and twelve dollars. The strictest care will be taken in shipping Baths. All orders promptly attended to.
