The final settlement of the big* Kuyerweather will contest drew twen-ty-six lawyers by actual count to Iiulg-e Truax's private chamber* in Xew York on Friday morning, ami fur in hour the twenty-six dickered for the proper bestowal of the costs os the case. AVilliam Klaikie. representing the executors of Mrs. Fayer weather, the testator's deceased widow, next asked for an extra allowances This was a signal for nearly all the rest of the twenty-six to chime in, and applications for more money and allowances poured down upon the Judge thick and fast. .Fudge Truax tried to put a stop to it all by saying that those who did not work in the case should get no pay. Hut no one would admit that he had not done anything.

Finally \!. narrowed down to the five colleges, who fought the will. Their various counsel got S3,000. All the counsel present agreed that an appeal was likely. This means several years more before the famous estate is settled.

A Beautiful Tribute.

Capt. H. 11. Talbot has received the illowing letter from a friend which is a beautiful tribtue to his mother: "It was thoughtful of you to send me papers with articles on the death and burial of your mother. The loss uf one sustaining that relation is amongst the greatest sorrows we have to bear, whether it comes early or late in life. My mother died when 1 was a boy, but the recollection of her form and face, her words and actions and her aims and character, has been, in its silent presence a pleasure to me through all my days. You saw your mother grow old doing good, unselfishly getting her own happiness in striving for the happiness of others, and the innumerable remembrances of her that will now eouie like a flood must surely console you at this time, and certainly comfort and cheer you ever after. Whil I write I remember the countenance of your mother as she looked during the years of our gatherings, so pleasant, in the old home, so long ago, and my heart is touched."

Dr. Harper's Opinion.

Dr. Harper, of the University of C'liiigo, does not agree with the Indiana college presidents or -approve of their action in putting ia restriction on the game of football. "It will not interfere with the game except in Indiana." he said, "and Indiana is but one State. Football is all right in my opinion. As far as the University of Chicago is concerned, it will always cncourage and support football as well as other good and popular athletic sosrts. The Chicago football teams have never been charged with brutality or unfair play. They have been beaten sometimes, but the first charge of ungeutlemanlv ac tion is yet to come."

KAST I:M NOTI S.

Mat Brandenburg is on the sick list. A1 Birch, of I'rbaua. HI., is in the city.

Mr. and Mrs. Brady have returned to their home at Brookiu, Itul. Mrs. Susie Miller, of Ladoga, was the. guest of Mrs. H. H. McDonald last week.

Albert Miller, of Poplar BlufVs, is at home with his family during the lioli days.

Charley Berry, night watch at the pottery, will locate in the east end soon.

Wheeler Huff has moved to the city and James Everson has taken his place at the dairy of Ben Oliver.

Mrs. Lydia Brooker and son of Barnard. Ind., visited James Atkinson last week, returning home Saturday evening.

The scarcity of gas last week caused the cold streaks to hunt for the backbone of many people who live in the east end.

Mrs. Nettie Blackwell and sons, of Mitchell, Ind., partook of the hospitality of Mrs. James Caldwell on east College street, Sunday.

Mrs. Nicholson and son. Meredith, who were the guests of her daughter Mrs. l'rof. Noble, returned to Indian apolis Saturday evening at 5 o'clock.

The Sunday school in the east end prefers to drop the mission part of the name and be known as the East End school. Granted, as far as I am concerned.

A very flattering notice of the skill and ability of one of our fellow towns men appeared in a Poplar Bin ft' newspaper a few days ago. It referred to George Hills, who seems to be making his mark as a machinist out there.

A BLAZE OF GLORY.

ipx-nl lir« on South Mret FxtlnguiMlH'ri ly Two Mrn.

A slight blaze occurred yesterday at the house of Mrs, Work. -il'S south Green street, in the 1 ooms occupied by l'rof. T. (',. .Walker, of the liusiness College. The lire was caused by the rafters beside the Hue becoming heated. Fortunately l'rof. Walker eama in. as usual, just when he was wanted, and opening his window gave the business college yell, which was instantly responded to by the ubiquitous T. .1. Houston, solicitor for the school, who is ever on hand when the interc us of the B. C. require him. After lout fifteen minutes hard work, with F. !. Walker on the top of the house and T. .1. Houston ably supporting him in the burning room the treacherous element was brought under control, both men working as quietly as if in the school room instructing- the young ideas how to shoot ahead of competitors in bookkeeping and stenography. Looking at the ravages done by the lire one cannut help wondering how two men with nothing but a few buckets of water managed to save the house. lint two men who have succeeded in building up the Crawfordsville Business College in the face of the dilliculties encountered in ls.it are not the kind of men to be beaten by an ordinary fire. Both l'rof. Walker and Mr. Houston are loud in their praises of the presence of mind displayed by Win. Work.
