The Common Council met In regular session on Monday evening with all oounciimen present.

A complaint was made to the council by Mrs. Shirp. who purchased the engine. house on College street, to the effect that she had been damaged by neglect or mistake. She claims that in the sale of said property she was to have all appurtenances attached thereto, and then the bell had been removed. Mr. Reynolds was empowered to make proper settlement concerning the matter.

The proposed street electric railway ordinance was adversely reported upon because it was claimed to be rather imleiiuite. Report adopted and Mr. Clodfelter then was permitted to with draw his proposition, remarking that the city may now be able to obtain such a railway without his aid.

A change was adopted in the con tract with the Monon railway in regard to Wabash avenue bridge. The Width was changed from 33 feet to 28, and "four cars" was made to read "or 400 barrels."

The city commissioners' report was recived on the Oak street extension and Mr. Wilhite made a motion to reject it. This motion was carried by a unanimous vote. A motion was carried, however, to issue warrants to pay the city commissioners for their work in the Oak street affair.

The Marshal was instructed to re move the banana wagon from the Campbell corner, and a complaint was made about the fires on the court house corner.

The following communication was received: CBAWFOBDSVILI.E, Ind., Dec. 23, 1S9-1. —To the Members of the City Council:—1 take the pleasure of presenting to you, in remembrance of my dear father, a Christmas token, his portrait.

Mns. WALLACE LINDEH.

This was a picture of Wm. Vanarsdall, and it was accepted and ordered framed and hung in the council chamber.

Accounts amounting to SI SO. 65 were allowed.

A proposition was accepted from the Home Telephone Co. permitting the city to use their poles in case it does not interfere with the telephone wires.

The council accepted the plat of the Thomson addition which is located in the south part of the city, between Washington and Walnut streets. This is the Prof. S. S. Thomson homestead.

A Small Blaze.

On Monday night near 1 o'clock, the fire company was called out to extinguish a fire at the store of R. B. Huff, on west Market street. The damage was very slight and was confined to the porch. Evidently some person had thrown down a cigar stub and the fire had gone through a crack in the floor, igniting the saw dust under the boards.

Miss Mollie llall is teaching the school at the Gillilaud school house. The patrons of the school to show how they appreciate her a» a teacher pro" pared a surprise'dinner for her and her pupUeon laet Friday. It was a grand sucoess. At about halt past eleven o'clock the patrons of the school began to arrive. When all WBI ready they marched to the school house door and

Mrs. Manning Davis knocked for admittance. In a few moments Miss llall opened the door. She was speechless for a short time, then threw up both hands as though some highwayman had ordered her to give up her pocketbook, and said for pity sake how did you all get together. In a short time all that had room to work were busy arranging for the feast that had been prepared. I will not attempt to tell how nice the dinner was, but will say it was grand: Miss Hall and her pupils ate first, then the patrons and visitors: in all sixty-Bevenand there was enough left for as many more. The afternoon was spent in ciphering, declamations, etc. Old Santa ClauB made his appearance and treated to oranges aud candy.

It was a day long to he remembered by all present. X.
