in a most eloquent and sympathetic manner, equalled only in some of Dave MeCalhster's bigrspeeehes before the last Legislature. These letters almost set the girl's father wild and he set out gunning for the destroyer of his only daughter. The daughter was also equipped with a piece of heavy artillery that she earricd in a large pocket in her dress skirt, whieli was furnished her by the venerable Doctor, so she, like King Theebaw of liurmah, might exterminate all her kith and kin so that there would not be left an heir apparent to mount the Wilson throne. The account of the affair in last night's Joiunai. was correct with ia few exeptions. First, Jabe Wilson, was entirely sober. Second, Dr. Owsley did not have a rifle but had two muskets loaded with 30 buckshot each, and became out of his office with both in hand.sitting one up against the door and holding the other in his hand, exclaiming to Wilson in his usual Kentucky brogue: "Ah you looking faw me. sah'.'" It seemed as though Wilson was looking for some one else just then. The facts as related concerning the matinee at the Owsley residence are all true. After Miss Wilson returned to Frankfort it was supposed we had witnessed the last scene, but some friend of hers had undoubtedly

Something That Science Has Failed to Fathom. Well might McPherson's ancient and half mythical Gaelic poet, speaking, eighteen hundred years ago, from the mists on his stormy hills, wonder at and rejoice in the sun, says the Hartford TimeB. Nor has Ossian's early question ever yet been answered: "Whence are thy bea.ms, O Sun! thy everlasting light?" Modern science has wrought damaging discussions about
done much to establish the universal reign of inviolable law but of all miracles, what greater one is there than the calm persistence, througji so many millions of years, of this unfail ing fount of light and warmth? We no longer deny or question the doctrine of Ivant and La Place concerning the origin of our family of planets—for science admits the truth of the conclusion, that one after another, but at vast ages apart, they were thrown off from the sun—once a nebulous object filling all the space to the farthest verge of Neptune's orbit (and perhaps farther), and then a slowly condensing body, from which the planet Mercury, or possibly a still nearer one to the sun, was the last to be thrown off. each and all obeying the omnipotent magnetic law that compels every planet to circle around the parent, orb—the controlling center ever keeping, like an earthly parent, his youngest child nearest to him. But science has not yet told us how the central magnet perpetuates its
Infinite stores of light and warmth. Ossian's question is a question still. Sometime perhaps the advance of science will give us some knowledge of the actuul nature and condition of that governing orb of our solar system.

WHAT ARE "BLUES"?
Woman's Color is an Unfailing Titermonieter.
CBFECUI. TO OCB LADY BKADKBS
A woman's thermometer is her color. She is red with embarrassment or some deep emotion she is white with fright she is supposed to be green with envy but when she is blue it means that she is sick.
It is not the a woman if slieS has the blues
and that "want-to-be-let-alone" feeling. It is the fault of her condition which makes happiness impossible.
No woman can be happy and lighthearted when painful female complaints crush out her life.
If she is melancholy, excitable, nervous, dizzy, or troubled with sleeplessness or fainting spells,..they are symptoms of serious female weakness.
A leaf out of the experience of Sirs. Anna Miller, who lives at Duhriug, Pa,, shows that Lydia K. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound will cure that terrible weakness and beari:ig-down pain in the abdomen, the dizziness in the head, the feeling of irritability, aud loss of appetite.

long distance a given amount of steam is illustrated in an account recently given by Mr. Coxe before the Society of Mechanical Engineers. It seems, says the New Y'ork Sun, that at a colliery it was desired to carry steam to a water works about forty-five hundred feet over a hill from the boiler plant. To do this a trough was made by nailing the edges of two boards together. so that they formed a right angle, the trough being supported by two stakes driven in the ground and crossing just beneath the trough the pipe was laid in the trough, resting on cast-iron plates, the pipe surrounded by mineral wool, *nd a similar inverted trough placed at the top.
