WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 12, 1S94.
Hoi.MAN iutends to write a book. Its title will probably be "An Objector Statesman Out of a Job."
Tins administration is more successful in issuing bonds for revenue than in making a tariff for revenue..
THK Greenfield Republican favors the removal of the- State I niverMtv from Hloomington to Indianapolis.
INDIANA was admitted into the I nion as a State on the 11th of December, is 1»5. just seventy-eight years ago. In twenty-two years we will be celebrating the State centennial.
THK people are very tired of the present Congress, and the best thing:
it can do is to take frequent and long claims no particular locality save th recesses, and do as little legislation as great evergreen forests as his home possible. The less tinkering currencv the better.
with the
THK cost of collecting the internal revenue during the last fiscal year was onlv 2.To per cent of the collections, but it will be a great deal larger during the present year on account of the expense of carrying out the Democratic plau of imposing the most odious .of war taxes in a time of peace.
THK inquisitorial character of the regulations framed by the treasury department for the enforcement of th income tax provisions of the tariff law has alarmed leadiug Democratic politicians as to the effect it will have on the future of the party, and many who voted for it are in tremulous fear of the outcome of the income.
1 is announced that Senator Voor hees intends to make a speech iu the Senate in favor of the free coinage of silver and incidentally fire a few bird shot into the Administration on account of its financial policy. As Yoorhees owns a mint for the free coinage of opinions the announcement will not startle the country.
Mil, HUOOKSHIKE has introduced bills to pension Lucinda E. Lee and Samuel I\ Clark. They were referred to the committee on invalid pensions where they will sleep the sleep that knows no waking. Neither the present Congress nor the President are built on the plan of providing special pensions. They prefer the "saving" plan.
CHICAGO Intcr-Ocatn: Vice President Evans, of Tennessee, sounds well. Democrats for the past thirty years
r".
tiKN. JOHN C. BLACK has been ap pointed United States District Attor nev at Chicago. General Mack draws a pension of SluO a mouth, and notwith standing his "total disability" he con stantly keeps his seat warm with a S3,000 office. This administration knows how to take care of the Generals and the Geuerals' widows, but should the widow of a poor devil of a private happen to have an income of the munificent sum of Ss a month the generous (V) Lochren can manufac ture laws to debir her from the pen sion provided for her by Congress.
THK Cincinnati says "The Congress of the United Mates is now engaged in the business of tinkering with the currency. The Currency Committee, of which Mr. Springer, of Illinois, is Chairman, has called what he styles eminent linau ciers to give to that committee, the full benefit of their accumulated knowledge- Of course a vast amount of theoretical or practical information will be supplied, but. after all. the people of the United States are in the main of the opinion that the best pol icy on the part of Congress is to let the currency alone. There has been tariff tinkering which has proved destructive ®ef our industries.
DK.MOCI5ACY AND l'KNMONS In the Indianapolis
Sentinel
of last
'.Saturday .I. K. Speer. of Indianapolis, addresses the editor of that paper as follows:
Will you permit an old Jacksonian Democrat to offer the following suggestions as to some of the prime causes that led up to our defeat at the late election and that will, if persisted in. cause a duplicate in lS'.ni?
And as one of the causes he writes: The old soldiers, the sons of veterans, and the soldiers' personal friends, on account of rulings of the commissioner ef pensions which caused the dropping of certain pensioners from the rolls, made a front attack on the Democratic party on Nov. 0 with as much determination to rout the party as they did to rout the enemy at Vicksburg. This large vote felt insulted and as-the Democratic party was in power, they held it responsible and joined the labor unions in making our defeat quite emphatic. No party can ignore these men and succeed at the polls. An order runs easily through all grand army posts when necessary to march in solid phalanx against any party. These voters cared but little about tariff or silver. They believe that the party in power was not fair in some of its dealings with old soldiers and they voted to defeat every Democrat. from constable to Congressman.

THE SOCIABLE MOOSE BIRD. Hm Campi with Huntors and Sharon Their Meals.
I have had other but more brief experiences with this interesting bird of the north woods. He is a nomad. Jle
The impulse of migration is evidently an unknown experience to him. You camp down for the night and he quietly greets you, spending the night near by, that he may lose no time in gleaning over the remains of yourbreakfast, writes Frederick Howard in Nature's Realm.
He is immediately interested in your preparations for departure, and, if he can spare the time from his search for a breakfast, will eume down to the canoe to see you off. us well as to get an idea of the way you are heading, and when yon are greeted at your next camping place in a similar manner you are at a losss to know whether it is the social individual of the previous night or a counterpart.
The woods of Maine, dear to me by pleasant associations, would lose half their charm to me without this bird. He ia in keeping with the somber shad ow of the spruce and hemlock. Persistent in his presence as the giant tree that rears its lofty form above your "shakedown," yet as unobtrusive as its shadow, so closely does he harmonize with the spirit of the silent wil denies*
