told his party

before the sugar bill passed that 'it would give the sugar trust SIO.OOU.OOO the first year." And yet Congress passed the bill and the Presidentullowed it to become a law.

has now turned hi at

tention to the pensions of widows and decides that where it is apparent that the widow lias an income e^ual to a month she does not occupy a pensionable status If the woman happens to be the widow of an officer of high rank Congress can pass a special bill and I!rover Cleveland can approve it. giving her $100 a month It. makes some ditYerencc as to whose widow, she is. There some consolation in the belief that the Hoke mith policy will onlv continue two vears longer.

Ghiltc Dn)i"cntt:

Mr. Cleve

land's assertion in last year's message that "thousands of neighborhoods had their we'll known fraudulent pensioners,'' and in the present message that "bure-faced and extensive frauds exposed" have been part of the work of the "administration, is an instance of language very carelessly handled. Commissioner Lochren reports 104 convictions for pension frauds during the year. There were thousands of pension spies encouraged and many of them paid to listen to tittle-tattle with the meager result just mentioned.

Terre Haute Tribune has inter

viewed several bankers and prominent politicians of that city on the Haiti-more-Cleveland-Carlisle-Eeklea plan for changing the currency. Among those interviewed was Congressman-elect (Jeo. \Y. Taris, who said:

It is a new question to me and 1 cannot pretend to have a tixed opinion on it. \Ye have not had a political campaign in recent years where the currency question has *been the great factor. except as to the coinage of silver. However, it seems to me that the prominence given to the currency system of the country now by the President's message and the report of Secretary Carlisle will succeed more in diverting attention from the political questions on which the people lately passed judgment, than in commending itself to the country at large. The scheme proposed is embryonic and has been abruptly cast before the people of the country. Congress will certainly not overhaul the currency system of this government without great care and deliberation. The best judgment cannot be formed of the feasibility of the

President's plan until the tiuanciers. leading business men and press of the country have discussed its probable effects on the general commercial affairs of the I'nited States."

THK

Delphi Journal offers the follow

ing prescription for duplicating the recent Republican victory in Indiana two years hence: "If the Jnumul were asked for a prescription that would result in duplicating the recent Republican victory in Indiana two years hence it would be this: Let the corning Legislature assemble on the day fixed and let every Republican member take pfV his coat and go to work. Pass a fair fee and salary law. a law placing the penal and benevolent institution}* under non-partisan boards, a law that would abolish convict contract labor .laws apportioning the State fairly for congressional and legislative purpose a free school book law and a law making it necessary for a county superintendent to hold a license from the State Hoard of Education. Then make liberal appropriations for all State in-".-•:..---titutions. Do this in forty-five or fifty days and adjourn sine die. and it would be a body blow from which Tom

Taggart aud his henchmen could not possibly recover in the ne-\t two vears."

KKN.IAMIN

A.

EATON,

wlio had charge

of the Democratic literary bureau of the recent campaign in this State and prepared the boiler plate matter for ttic county organs, five days before the election sent out a circular which in view of what did happen makes mighty interesting reading now for Republicans. Among other things it sa\s

The evidence of arising Democratic tide all over the country, noted in those dispatches several days ago, continue to multiply. The Democratic leaders in New York are now conti dentlv claiming that .State by a majority of from thirty-five to fifty thousand. Illinois is absolutely certain to go Democratic, the immense registration in the Democratic wards of Chicago insuring that result beyond a shadow of a doubt. Wisconsin has been given up by the Republicans, and in Iowa. Kansas and Nebraska the Democrats are making a splendid fight with good prospects, especially in Ne braska. In the far northwest the Democratic outlook is bright, while California is look upon as surely Democratic. With this condition of affairs in the nation Indiana would cut sorry figure if the Republicans should by hook or crook secure a victor}-. The commanding influence which Indiana has so long held in the affairs of the nation would be completely dissipated and she would cut no more figure than Delaware or Nevada. But such a condition is not likuly to arifce.

I»h Performed ly th»» \d«pt* I van*c»-J5iHii£r Naturil luv.-. 1 Irive soon many m«nv u\'iHu'rfi: thing's. The three ureal miracle per* formed by the adepts--the rope, tin* basket and the nutng-o-troc exhibition* —1 have seen many time*. They artall performed in broad duyii^ln am) thousands of persons are UMKIIU crowded around on all Mdei. I remember once. in particular. when I saw the manjro-tree miracle. A rishi appeared about two o'clock in the afternoon in the street of a town. Immediately hundreds of persons surrounded him. He took a manyo and scratching* a small hole in the ground planted it. A few minute** later a grent tree more than sixty feet hiyh took form before tue.

It was complete in leaf, branch ami

a

|,i about it was that when the wind

No closure and and no popgun bills Vdew its leaves did not stir. In a spirit that seems to be the programme of of investigation I walked up to it and the Senate' I touched it and took hold of some of the leaves. It was apparently a

real

tree. To prove it further I climbed up the trunk seven or eight feet. Then I returned to mv place in the crowd. The adept sat down and preached one of the mot beautiful .sermons 1 ever heard. It was a narrative of the birth tales »f Huddha. When lie had finished I looked up and the great tree was gone. On going forward I saw the rishi dig up the mango fruit and in spite of all efforts to detain him he pressed through the crowd and was gone.

The rope miracle i* still more wonderful. A rishi appears the center of the crowd in broad dayliirht with a rope in his hand. He throws'it' into the air and it remains standing uj right as if it were a pole. Then hand over hand he climbs to the t«»p of it.. It has no visible means of support at either end. When lie reach the top tjie rope seems to lengthen upward into the clear sky. and the rishi continues to climb until he disappear? wholly from view, not to reappear. Many of the adepts take thi- method of leaving a crowd when they have finished their sermons.

The apparent suspensions of the laws of gravity is a common exhibition among the fakirs. 1 have seen one of them take his hand away fron: a coeoanut shell and leave it suspended in mid-air. A number of times have taken hold of it aud tried to move it. but all in vain. When the fakir gets ready he sometimes gives the word suddenly, the shell yields, and the man who is tugging away on it goes tumbling upon the ground.

It is my belief that the higher adept? are missionaries and prophets to their races. Some of their teachings are both beautiful and equal to or beyond our standard of morals.

Now. 1 have told all these wonderful things without saying what I real ly thought of them. 1 believe that the Hindoos have come to a better and a truer conclusion concerning life's* mysteries than wc have with al our science. Uur advancement ha only added to our material comfortsfood, clothing and houses to live inbut the Hindoo has something better, He believes both in the past and in the future. He has no fear of death. I cause he believes that it will only change hi* form. His life is spent the work of getting more and mon-* behind the curtain and deeper aud deeper into life's mysteries. He issat isfie'd. and that is more than can said of any man in Europe or America Many of the wonderful miracles per formed by the adepts I believe can be explained in the terms of what we call hypnotism—the power of inind over mind.

What we know of hypnotism is yet limited, but in the case of the Hindoos the power is developed to a remarka ble degree. Now, I don't believe that a rishi made a mango tree grow in three minutes, but I do believe that his power over the minds of the spec tators was so great that they all thought that the tree was real. In fact. I go further. I believe wit! Schopenhauer, that what we know of the material world is only the creation of the brain. Mind is all and in al Dr. Hcnsoldt, in Chicago Record.

A Fly to the Rcsenp^

There is a large black and white hornet that makes it his business to catch tlies. He has a hard time to get hold of one, and when he does he carries il with his front legs to some convenient spot, and proceeds to pull off the fly's wings, head, and legs before taking him to his nest. A hornet had succeeded in catching a fly, and had settled on the edge of an open door. He commenced amputating with a great deal of trouble, standing on his hind legs and working with his front ones. Me was about half-way through his work when another fly, a relative of the victim perhaps, arrived on the scene and commenced wheeling around and around the hornet, seeming to be in great distress. The fly suddenly flew off to a distance and returned with lightning speed, straight as an arrow, toward the tottering hornet, ramming him with all his strength. This was repeated until the hornet was completely dislodged, and forced to retire. The fly had certainly done its best to save its companion's life.
