THE Wo BASH AYl-NL'K 11 111 DC,

rnRiihllllv Tl.at the l*ri)|io««'il Structure Will Not b.' Itv.ilt.

The council met Utst eveniny in pccial session ami the bids for the tone work on tlie abutments at the Wabash avenue bridge over the Monou cut were opened. There were seven bids in all and the bids varied greatly. The highest bid was SI.."IO per cubic yard submitted by a Detroit firm. The lowest was S'*.00 per cubic yard submitted by 1'at Slatterv of this city. 1'he bids were all higher than was expected and the council did not let the contract but took the matter under advisement until next Monday evening.

There are 1.110 cubic yards in the proposed work and at S^i.OO per cubic yard the cost would be exclusive of the work of excavating and backing.

Siinc of the council are said to be in furor of dropping the project altoether and of notifying the Morion to go ahead and again repair the old death trap of a bridge which now adorns the avenue.

There are serious objections to the dropping of the work, however, and by far the most serious is llocuin street, which bobs up like lianquo's death head at the banquet

al

which will

not down. If the proposed new bridge is not erected the extension of Hocutn street between Wabash avenue and Pike street will be wholly useless and the utility of the extension from '.'ike to Main destroyed just about half. The object in extending llocuin street was to give perple an opportunity of getting over to the avenue without making tlie trip around by Elston avenue or scaling tlie snow clad summits of the "Tike's Teak" bridge. Tlie extension to the avenue now comes up with a jerk at the Monou cut many feet to the north of the present structure, which must be made the width of the avenue to make Hoeum street at all useful to Wabash avenue. Troperty holders along Hocum street can come on to the city for damages if they are left as thev are. in the other hand there is the big expense to be incurred by the proposed stoue work. Verily the council is in a bad ro w. of stumps.
