DESTRUCTIVE BLAZE. A WHIPPER-IN.

IIohcIhImIv Again VI&lttHl and a Goodly Tart of tlie Town in Anliew The Work of Firebugs.

Special to The Journal. RoACiin.w.K. Oct. 22. For the third time in the past few months Roachdale has been visited bv a destructive blaze and there is every reason to believe that an organized gang of firebugs and thieves have entered into a plot to wipe the town off the face of the earth. About 9:30 o'clock last night (lames were discovered in the rear of

Porter & Jones' poultry packing establishment and spread so rapidly that for a time it seemed that the entire business portion and the residence properties east and north were loomed. Before they could be checked the Allison block, three rooms, the Grantham corner, one room and two shops, Porter A. Jones' poultry house, Banner's meat market and E. T. Logan's photograph gallery were totally destroyed, and the blacksmith shop and several dwellings badly damaged. The losses and insurance so far as can be ascertained are as follows: Porter & Jones S!U0, no insurance: Allison, on stock of groceries S'00, insurance S2.10: Allison, buildiug 32,000. insurance 5.100: Goslin, plumbers' supplies, S2.10. no insurance: Eggers' meat market. S300, no insurance Banner's meat market, S000, insurance 8IS00 Owsley, grocery stock, SSOO, no insurance: Grantham, on buildings, SI,500, no insurance: James Miller, on building, SI.000. insurance $100

E. L. Logan, photographer. $100, no insurance Fannie Wilson, household good, S50, insured: T. B. Manter, residence damaged. S7.1. insured: Joe Akers, residence damaged, insured. Ten head of horses, four huckster wagons, harness, etc., of the value of §2,000 and without insurance went up the flume also in Porter Jones' establish ment.

One horse escaped from the building but the poor beast's life was only prolonged a few minutes, for it fell with its eyes and ears burned out and the skin cooked to a crisp. While the citizens were out fighting the flames the dastard fire bugs were busy on the other side of the town and several residences were ransacked.

Hanging is too good for the miscreants who are responsible and it is safe to assume that the good citizens of Roachdale, who are now thoroughly aroused, will spare no efforts to bring them to justice.

lion. James A. Mount's Appointment*. Hon. James A. Mount will speak today at Vevay. Tuesday at Rising Sun. Wednesday at Lawrenceburg, Thursday at Versailles, Friday at Brockville, and Saturday at Rushville. All these appointments are in the Holman district. Of his canvass in Daviess county the Washington (Jazetlc says: "Senator Mount's speeches were among the best ever heard in Daviess county. They were simpl ,- unanswerable and he told the farmer audiences many things they will long remember and ponder over. The campaign of Senator Mount has been a most interesting one and like on other occasions will bear its print in November."

Ieath of Geo. 11. Alexander. George II. Alexander, a respected citizen of Coal Creek township, died yesterday afternoon at the residence of his son-in-law, Thomas Breaks. II has been in poor health for some time but drops}- was the immediate cause, of his death. The deceased was (11 years of age and leaves a wife and seven children. He filled the office of county Recorder thirty years ago. The funeral will occur Tuesday at Linden at 1 p. m., at the M. E. church. Rev. G. Stephens otiiciatiug.

Mr. Howe's ltegignation Acreptcd. Yesterday morning at the Christian church John Booe announced that the board had at its meeting last Monday accepted the resignation of the pastor. Rev. W. J. Howe, who has been called to a lucrative charge in Kentucky Mr. Howe will preach his farewell sermons about the first of November, one in the morning and one in the evening.

WABASH COLI.EGE I.I I E.

1 to 4. Dr. Burroughs is out of town. John Little. '!4, is visiting here. Flunkers were numerous to-day. "Its a good thing, push it along.'' Kern was quite seriously hurt carries his arm in a sling.

The Wliip|ied-Iu Turn* AVflipper-1u Starts Out ou a Missionary Tour.

He

The team expects to shut out I. I", next Saturday. Why not'. Every foot .ball player was cheered as he entered chapel this morning.

The DePauw sports are very glad the Wabash boys are not gambling sharks. Foot ball stock has gone up several notches hereabouts since last Saturday evening.

Terrell, the DePauw center, drank ice water after the game and almost died. He is some better now.

The I. I". men were enthusiastic for Wabash. They went across the ball ground in a body shouting for us.

With the exception of a few individual cases our boys were treated with the utmost courtesy while at Green castle.

Some of the students stayed in Greeneastle until the midnight train Saturday night. Not a yellow ribbon was seen after 7 o'clock

Some hoodlum dentist of Greeneastle tried to get alight with Randall but our gentlemanly coacher would not be tormented by the little feint.

In the Harrison parade at Lafayetti Saturday twelve members of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, of which General Harrison is also a member, acted as a special escort.

The playing of Wabash was wonderful. Such team work is hardly ever seen. Every man knew his place and his duty and did it. One more game like it and we are the champions of Indiana.

Purdue had a walkaway with th Armour Institute team from Chicago Saturday, shutting them out without the faintest suggestion of a touch down and accumulating thirty-six points themselves.

The support of which the college gave is hardly ever equaled. Out of 230 students more than 200 went with the team. All of the college classes sent their whole numbers excepting a very few. The preparatory department sent a good representation.

Lafayette Sunday Times: Only one or two of the unfortunate fellows who were connected with the hazing of Parker are left, and most of the "letout" are now settled in other schools, such as Champaign, Ann Arbor, University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University The foot ball team leaves next week for Minnesota, where

is

to play the supposed champions of the blood.' Sure cure, also, northwest. It is a long trip and a sumption in its early stages, hard game, and it is to be hoped 'Purdue's Pride" will come off victorious. as usual.

and

Special to The Journal. Daki.i.notox, Oct. 22.—Although the scripture admonishes us that we shall work but six days and rest on the seventh, yet so anxious is Win. Johnston that this county shall endorse lirookshire that he broke last Sunday square in Uvo by gettiug over into Sugar Creek township and by running down certain heretofore Democrats and crying, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, unless lirookshire is again elected, Walter, the son of John will remain in Crawfordsvilie and be in our way." On arriving at Darlington he cried with a loud voice, "Not my will but thine, oh Uncle John. I did say you could not gather me under yourWing to any great extent, but 1 was mistaken and here 1 am. Do with me as you and lirookshire may see fit. 1 did not know my wants. I thought that to the victor belongs the spoils, but I now acknowledge that 'T'Vi.xt you anil I, I rt-ally think.

That li just ab jut tiuio to take a drink.

County Fair Matters.

The Western Indiana Fir Circuit met at Lafayette Saturday to make arrangements for next years' agricultural exhibitions. The eireuit includes the Sheridan, Lafayette, Lebanon. Frankfort. Boswell. Covington and Crawfordsvilie fairs and all were represented. W. W. Morgan looked after the interests of "The Greatest on Earth" and reports a harmonious and profitable session. The chief discussion was relative to dates and it is believed that they tan be arranged for next fall without a single clash. Crawfordsvilie will drop back to her old date, the second week in September and in consequence Covington will be compelled to drop back a week or perhaps two, unless she is willing to buck the State fair. Another meeting will be held shortly to perfect the mat ter.

lAnthony's Antler*.

Anthony Irons, a strapping granger with an appetite for local brands of bug juice, came to town Saturday and made the rounds. About o'clock at night he was found by otlieer Jack Bannister stretched across the tiack in the vicinity of the Monon depot, and dead to the world. Authony and his jag were waltzed oIV to the bastile and in response to a plea of guilty this morning, Mayor l'.andel gave .his consent for him to develop muscle ou the stone pile. Irons claims that he was relieved of a gold watch during his nap on the railroad track, but the police arc inclined to think he is talking at random.

Itu8lness Change.

E. A. Wilhite has disposed of his tailoring business to Capt. George W. Lamb and the latter will take possession the first of next mouth. Uncle Eal began his apprenticeship nearly sixty-five years ago and has been cutting garments for the Crawfordsvilie trade over a half century, lie cannot be persuaded to get out of the business entirely and will make the shop headquarters for a time ready to lend a hand when necessary.

Duffy's Itlumlors.

The Lafayette and Terre Haute papers speak in the highest terms of Barney Ferguson and his new play. "Duffy's Blunders, which will be presented at Music Hall to-night. Barney has appeared in Crawfordsvilie several times and has never yet disappointed his audience. His new play is the funniest yet, and the comedian appears at his best as Duffy, the hydrant inspector. The advance sale is good.

Slmoiiides Court.

The Tribe of Beu-llur, Simonides Court, will meet this evening at seven o'clock. Gi:oi:ok W. Graham. Chief.
