was started in Philadelphia five years Ujjo and ils purpose is defined as follows: "To organize the students in the universities and every great professional school, so that each college shall have suitable rooms for social and religious advantage, that young men coming as strangers to the city can be •introduced into good homes, to attendance upon church, and to be surrounded by healthful. social and roHjfioiis influences, and that the social and spiritual side of the student's life should be looked after as carefully as the intellectual.''

is a tariff lesson for fanners.

Last week'Squire Hoggs, a wealthy farmer of Howard county, shipped nineteen cars of baled hay to Baltimore, Md., where he had been marketing his crop for some years. On Friday he received a letter from his commission merchant stating that on account of the tremendous amount of hay shipped to Baltimore from Canada since the tariff law went into effect, there was no market for Mr. Boggs" consignment, aud it would scarcely bring enough to pay the freight. The nineteen cars of hay remain the Haitimore yards, subject to 'Squire Boggs" orders. Mr. Boggs will los»* heavily by the shipment, and he is thoroughly .•disgusted with the Democratic party and its destructive legislation.

"Money the New (follows: that all

agree in attributing an improved feeling in business to the general expectation of Republican victory. Dollars indulge no prejudice. When men are making calculations on which they are to realize profits or losses, they all reckon Republican victories a good thing for business. As Wall street just now believes about two to one in Republican victories, a strong improvement might be expected, if other conditions would permit. Hut no vote this fall can immediately get rid of the present tariff, though it may stop more legislation of that sort. No vote this fall can give the workingman at once heir old wages, though it may prevent further decline. Nor can any vote give the country a better corn crop or higher prices for the immense surplus of wheat and cotton. The improvement which a vote can bring must therefore be prospective rather than immediate.

'J'iik talk about Cleveland's pension policy is a little stale. The people have voted on that several times al-ready.—.-I rj/us Xctrg.

Yes. In 1 his pension policy was fresh in the minds of the people and they voted, and the result was not at all complimentary to his policy. In IS'J'J the voters were misled by Democratic promises and they have been kicking themselves ever since. Thousands of the pensioners have learned to their great sorrow that the pension policy of his second administration is even more brutal than that of his first administration. Then he gratified his hate by vetoing over noo pension bills including the Independent 1'ension bill which afterward became a law under President Harrison. Now his administration takes out its revenge by dropping thousands from the rolls, reducing thousands of others in the amounts they receive, and in the rejection of 132,000 claims during the first full year it has been in power. The I'tiion veteran does think his policy is becoming stale, and as a Demo, cratic pensioner said to Tiik .Iouiinai. the other day. lie proposes for tliisone time at least to give it a black eye with that little weapon that falls as silently as the snow flakes.

Unhkh the Senate bill this country will do more business with Cuba and all foreign countries than has ever been done. Mark the prediction.— -1 rijtUi-Xcwti.

The AryuH'XcwK having made the discovery that the tariff is not a tax now goes to the textreme. It thinks that the Spanish tariff of SI.75 per hundred kilos on American flour is better than $1, and that 83.05 on American corn instead of 25 cents will stimulate our business with Cuba. The following articles, which were formerly free when imported into Cuba from the United States, are now dutiable per hundred kilos: Lard. 810: liams, S7.50 bacon, 810: salt beef, 85.40: fruits, 83.25: codfish. 82: oysters and salmon. 82.30: hay, HO cents, beans. 83.25: potatoes, 81.80 lumber (per l,()no) 81.25. The duties on coal, machinery, and manufactures of iron, wood and cotton have been largely increased. The Arijiix-Ncwx talks unctuously about "more business with Cuba" since it approves the upsetting of the arrangement by which we had virtual possession of the markets of Cuba and Porto Rico on many products of the farm and factory, and under which our exports increased from SI 1,307,ins in 188U to 823,701.094 in 1893. "British trade with Cuba has almost become a thing of the past." notes the English consul-general at Havana in regard to the reciprocity treaty. "The effect has been to throw nearly the entire Cuban trade into the hands of the 1'nited States trailers."

In a Sunday school, when the lesson of the Good Shepherd was being explained, the question was asked, "How does the Good Shepherd know hi). Sheep?" Young Washington, who had been visiting his uncles sheep farm, thought he knew. "Tell the class, my dear." said the teacher. "Some 1 slits their ears and some he marks red chalk,"' said the boy. These would be distinguishing marks, indeed, but not more so than are the marks of health of the contenances of those who use Dr. Pierce Golden Medical Discovery!
