Women's prisons are not always built of iron bars and solid masonry. It is easy to shut women up from the beautiful, joyous world without these means.

Mrs. Mary A. Tapper has been releasetl at Wilton, Me., from the custody of extreme female weakness and nervousness

which kept h'T a prisoner in bed, unable lo walk. J' -VvLt/ilia E. /'/iifr/i'iwV'Vepetahle Compound went to the root of her trouble, and gave her the liberty of health, so that after taking two bottles she was able to go out of doors and surprise her husband and friends by her rapid improvement.

She says: "Women should beware of dizziness, sudden faintness, backache, extreme lassitude and depression. They are danger signals of female weakness, or some derangement of the uterus or womb. Take Lydia E. I'inknam's Vegetable Compound, and be thankful for your life as I am. It only cost.« a dollar to try it, and the result is worth millions. Ask some druggist about it." ....

Oct. 5.—This morning

about 1 o'clock the entire town was aroused by the alarm of tire. The citizens appearing on the streets discovered that the tlames were raging on the west side of the main thoroughfare and threatening to destroy the whole business portion of town. The work of lighting the tlames was begun with a will and by heroic work the lire was confined to the west side. The heat was so intense, however, that lass was broken from the buildings on tlie east side and the paint scaled oil'.

The damage is chietly on the west side of the cross street and while the loss is heavy the buildings burned were all old and unsightly. The bank building was all that saved the store of Manila A Kritz, and the bank building was damaged considerably. The lire originated outside of John Moore's butcher shop in the rear, from what cause is not known. The losses are as follows:

Moore's butcher shop, S"iO. John K. Canine's grocery store. SI. 000.

Motel building and furniture, Sl.iiOO. Cuppy barber shop, building, §10U furniture. ?•"(.

Mrs. lilioads' harness shop, on building. S100: stock unknown. Shular A. Allen's oil house, on stock,

John liice's barn and contents, S3."(). Dr. Ueese Kelso's ollice furniture.575. There were also a number of small losses. The amount of insurance is not known but it will not cover the loss.

Canterbury Club Treated.

Last August some practical jokers very coolly slipped up on the Canterbury club by hooking the sherbet and two fiue cakes which were intended to rve as refreshments after an initiation. The joke has been the subject of considerable discussion ever since and after a couple of months of diligent investigation (to say nothing of a few very wrong scents) the perpetrators of the joke were discovered. The club made it warm for them, so last night its members were called together at the home of one of its ollieers in order to receive from the jokers a treat similar to the one which had been missed in August. There were two or three hitches in the programme, however. The sherbet came all right but two elegant cakes failed to show up. Accordingly the yonng ladies were forced to send down town and buy baker's cake. Again a crowd of guying seranaders put in an appearance and fairly made night hideous. It is suspected that the cakes intended for last evening's treat were also used to regale the wrong parties as they were ordered correctly. Altogether the club does not feel exactly square with the world and a day of reckoning will surely come. sw, 'V

•J. T. Wright, of near Des.Moines. Iowa, is here on a visit to friends in this city and vicinity. Mr. Wright left this county and went to Iowa in lS.Vi. His father, tieorge Wright, was for many years the keeper of Wright's Tavern, three-quarters of a mile west of Linden. This was in the day before railroads and of course did a thriving business. The changes that have been made in Madison township Mr. Wright says have been quite marked, and there are but few recognized landmarks left. His father died about twenty years ago. Mr. Wright has been prosperous as he is the owner of 700 acres of line land within eight miles of DesMoines.
