AMERICAN ROBBERS.
Nobody Honest Itut the Foreigner* According to the statesman Kroiu Cotil Creek.
Millivan lnhnr. During his speech lor free trade last Saturday, one of the Democratic orators. Michael Foley, confessed that the tariff ou wheat hdn't raise the priccany for the reason that we raised plenty for home consumption. Just so with woolen goods and cotton goods, nails and railway iron. We produce enough for the home market and the tariff on these goods gives our folks their own market. If, however, an Englishman or anybody else wants to compete in our markets where everything is made cheap by home competition, he can do do. but he must pay for the privilege. We doubt whether there is a suit of clothes in Sullivan that ever paid a cent duty and home competition has made wearing apparel as cheap as it can be made and paying living wages. The young Mr. Foley has got a good deal to learn yet and he will know a good deal more November 7 than he will care to admit. If the men that make clothing are "robbers." he should not stop short of every industry that is protected, for from the force of his argument, he must regard the farmer a "robber" along with the rest.
MUSIC HALL MUST PAY.
The Association Liable for Assessment for the Construction of Sewer.
The Music Hall Association resisted the payment of the assessment made against it for the construction of the sewer in the alley running- east and west north of the hall. The ease was tried in the Montgomery circuit court and decided adversely to the Association. An appeal was taken to the Appellate court and .ludge Keinhard has just handed down an opinion affirming the decision of the lower court, .ludge Keinhard says:
The transcript in a sewer assessment need not declare allirmatively as to the length of time and the dates when the notices required by statute (Section 4:.'9-i. It. S. ls i|) were given. If some notice has been given ami the body making the assessment determines the same is sufficient the property owner cannot be permitted to inquire into the suflieieney of the notice collaterally. The transcript is the contractor's complaint, 'nd should receive a liberal construction, and will be upheld unless it contain some defect predjudicial to the substantial rights of the parties. An entire failure to give notice of the declaratory resolution would not invalidate the proceedings orassessment. When a lot owner la corporation', through its secretary, knew the sewer was being constructed and made connection therewith and used the same, it is estopped to question the sufficiency of the notice.
Aftermath.
The K. of P. celebration •••'•yesterday was continued until a late hour last night the streets being thronged with people to witness the bicycle parade and the fireworks. The celebration was a great success all around and is so declared by everyone who was here. It was in the natue of a boom for future affairs of that character.

IK-Bayard Lodge, No. 'm, K. of P.. tie.si res to express its thankfulness to the citizens of Crawfordsville who contributed to the entertainment of its guests yesterday. The interest shown by so many in displaying the colors of the order was duly appreciated, and the handsome decorations with National and K. of P. colors which greeted them ou so many residences and business houses were objects of pleasure and pride, not only by the local Knights but by the visitors as well. To the city authorities. Mayor aud police force t-hej* feel grateful for clearing the streets on the line of march and for their splendid management of the crowds. Not an accident occurred.
Company I of the Reg. 1 mi. Militia is also entitled its meed of praise. It acted as escort guard to !e»: Jus. R. Ross of the Indiana Brigade, Filiform Rank, K. of P., who is also Colonel of the ^d regiment to which it belongs.*
The youths who played Indians and cowboys were never surpassed outside a wild west show and were «iuitc a feature of the entei tainment. And the bicycle riders with their Japanese lanterns were a very .material assistance to the entertainment of the people who crowded the streets and sidewalks in the evening. DeBayard Lodge feels that without the generosity and assistance of those who helped entertain their guests yesterday the success of the occasion would have been greatly marred.
JETT WAS BETRAYED.
St-rious barges Made Against ('oii^n'tsmun !rook»hh-t by Clay City Di-mocrnt*.
A dispatch from Clay City to the Indianapolis./ni/nmf says: Congressman Brookshire was given a cool reception last night. P. T. Jett, chairman of the Democratic township comm'ttee. would not attend the speaking. Neither would he distribute the bills announcing the meeting. With the ushering in of the Cleveland administration. Brookshire had pledged his support to Mr. Jett in his candidacy for postmaster. Soon after this Mr. Brookshire wrote a letter to one of the ring Democrats here stating that he had recommended the editor of the Clay City Scnlhid. W. K. Naugle. for the position: and soon after wrote another letter stating that he had not made such recommendation. The scheme was to oust G. K. berholtzer. the present postmaster, a stanch Democrat and the son of one of the wheel horses of the Democratic party"of Clay county. As Brookshire has betrayed both Jett and Oberholtzer, it is not believed than any quantity of taffy will be sufficient to close up the breach that has been made.

The following resolution wa* adopted by the Marion county W. C. T. F. convention: liC'Solred. That we deplore the action of the board of directors of the State fair in placing a beer exhibit in the woman's building on the State fair grounds during the last State fair over the protest of the temperance women, where there was no place designated in the whole, catalogue for such an exhibition: and we also greatly regret that on the opening day. when the children of the public schools were permitted by their parents to attend the fair, thev were used as advertising agents by placing cards given them in their hats.
