Ut'oujida and Kuotn for More-Some Fust Races—The Financial Outlook.
Those who predict that county fairs arc a back number and have hail their day should have been at "the 'greatest on earth" yesterday. It is a shining exception for the reason that it is managed by a set of men who know no such word as fail. The directors and all in authority lay awake at niglits thinking of ways and {means to keep the Crawfordsville fair to the front and the result therefore could not be otherwise than it is. .Secretary Morgan probably does more hard work than my other one man and every lick he puts in is effective. .1. J. lnslev, superintendent of the speed ring, which is the biggest attraction, has spent days and weeks of his valuable time and not a little of his good mone3' in making his feature the success it has proved to be. And President John I
Davis has been everywhere and done everything that would add anything to the pleasure of the people who at tend the fair and those who make en tries. It is but natural that those who have labored in this way should feel gratified at the immense throng that was on the grounds yesterday, whic) at conservative estimates was not less than 2:1.000. The financial outlook is good, too, and the directors believe that they will easily pay out.

NOTKS.
The fair will close to-night. Oeorge Hughes won the first prize on best organ.
Que Allen broke the track record for trottiug yesterday. The award for blooming plants was given to Mr. Vantleven.
Krause & Crist carried ..first honors on their display ot plants. First premium on display of jewelrv was awarded to C. L. Rost. •Smith A Myers obtained first premium on on general display of drugs.
The lemonade stand in the circle has turned a fortune in the last two days. Mrs. Will K. Martin carried away twelve red ribbons together with ten blue ones.
J. A. (iilbert was awarded first premium 011 general display, also first on best piano.
David L. Trout, of Chicago, was an interested spectator in the live stockexhibition.
Miss Hattie Ashley obtained nine firsts and two seconds in the display of water colors.
Miss Nellie llolbrook as superintendent in three art classes has given general satisfaction.
Pickpockets have not been so numerous on the grounds this year as usual. They are all in Lafayette.
Elijah Clore was located near the middle entrance tind his beautiful iiorses were much admired.
Miss Matie Martin captured premiums on everything she entered, obthree firsts and two seconds.
Mrs. .I0I111 Nicholson captured six firsts on display of drawn work, sideboard scarf and .olograph cases.
Crawfordsville can buck the whole aggregation o' fairs and still succeed. Yesterday was an old timer and so is to-day.
Mrs. Alaric Smith was well remembered in the dit.ti ibtuon of prizes for flowers, capturing nearly everything in sight.
Minnie R, Carl Scott's mare that figured in yesterday's wreck, is in bad shape to-day. suffering from some vicious wounds.
At Baldwin's music store last even.1. Ilillis rendered a number of beautiful solos. The Quinton quartette also added to the pleasure of the occasion.
The fakirs at the fair grounds were all happy yesterday and sold enough stull to set themselves square. Today's receipts were clear profit to uiost.
Only about f0o attended the grounds last night but all who went were amply repaid. The dances were even more enjoyable features than the fountain.
It was currently reported last night at 0 o'clock that (ice Grimes was dead and the country people leaving at that time carried the "news" for many miles about.
Dave Martin together with a bran new white vest advises the audience in the amphitheater when to stand up. when he sit down and also the best time for returning home.
The grounds are not tilled with the rough tough class which predominates in Lafayette and other places where beer drinking and the "shell racket" are the paramount features.
George Whittingtou has been as busy as a hen with one chicken showing the people how beautifully his new knotter works and how much twine it saves on each bundle of wheal. Everybody likes it
The balloon ascension •yesterday was as tame as a pet chicken. The old shebang went straight up and the professor cut the parachute loose before his toes were fairly ofl' the ground. Balloon ascensions are a fake.
The association yesterday hung out a £."0 purse for any horse in the free-for-all pace to break the track record of2:lfK made two years ago by Gee Grimes' horse. When the sun went down that record was still unshattcrcd.
During the excitement incident to
the accident of (ice lirimes yesterday a revolver being to ollicer E. II. Matinister was dropped 011 the grounds. A suitable reward will be given for its r.-turn.
Thousands have' admired the pianos and organs shown bv I). It. Bald win&Co. Those who want to purchase should consult their local manager, Mr. (I0o. t\ Hughes at the store on south Washington street. l!y the way Mr. IJuglies has just sold line instruments to Depew Ilyten at Ladoga, and \V. Ancient Ruins In Arizonn.
L. J. Court, a mining prospector, has just returned to Prescott, Ari.. from a three months' sojourn In 011c of the most remote and little-known parts of the territory, and says that, that section contains more Aztec ruins than any other portion of America, evidences of human habitation being found from the highest peaks to the lowest valleys. In one plaoo ho found a road or street three miles in length, perfectly smooth and straight and sixty feet in width. On either side of the street the entire distance are ruins. The road was evidently built prior to some mighty oarWiquako, as it ends abruptly at the brink of a mighty chasm, lie dug up and found lying about a great number of skeletons which were in a fair state of preservation, tho heads of all being alike—very large over the eyes and receding, and almost flat toward the back of the headi jaws well developed, but front upper and lower teeth small and sharp. The ruins show the people to have been workers in stone, some fragments of work in turquoise being found. Every available foot of land had once been cultivated. The region, ultliough little has been known aixmt It, is a very accessible one. and will no doubt become an interesting resort for travelers.
