The funeral services were held at ML. l'leobant church August :.Mi. and the remains were laid to rest in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery. The following- brief sketch was written by herself some time before her death:

Stalker resumed his lecture at 1:35 aud discoursed ou "How We Know." lie gave the subject a thorough renovation and talked on the objects we have in view in whatever we undertake. l'rof. Mclieth followed and took an extreme position ou -'Correllation of lieography and History," and liaTC'd several methods that may be practiced in teaching these sub" jects. After a short intermission l'rof. Ogg taiked on '"Three Novels of Dr. lloimes." lie paid a glowing tribute to Holmes and related some amusing incidents pertaining to Holmes and his works. He had just concluded a story which a heroine had saved the life of a young doctor. At this juncture a dog gave a prodigious howl in the rear of the room which caused much applause.

After the opening exercises l'rof. Ogg continued his talk on "Elsie Veil ner" and told the story of the novel in a very interesting way. Miss Wells of Indianapolis, was then introduced and gave a very interesting lecture ou 'Primary Work" and gave an incident of the mode of teaching in the Minue apolis schools. Prof. Stalker followed with a talk on "How We Know" and noted several points such as experi ments in physiology, etc. Institute adiourued at 11:45.

Kev. Porter In Trouble.
The trial of Rev. J. W. Porter, formerly of Ladoga, has not yet occurred at Decatur. Porter is charged with having stolen a pocketbook containing which a lady left on her seat at church while she went forward to take sacrament. There is a pretty strong case against Porter and it is likely to go hard with him. He was several vears ago the baptist minister at Ladoga and married a daughter of the late Asbury Hicks, of this county. Mrs. Porter is an excellent woman and will doubtless secure a divorce from Porter.
Not on the Committee.
John Ryas called at TIIK JOPKNAI. otliee to-day to deny that he had anjr knowledge of his name being placed on a committee of colored folks to act in the school matter. He declars that he knows nothing whatever of the movement and that the use of his name was unauthorized.

The Mission Sunday school of Center church was picnicked this afternoon at Hen IJur Park. The teachers had large baskets filled with the finest provender and all went merry as a marriage bell.

Mrs. Nancy Sidener has applied for a divorce from Thomas JeiT'erson Sidener. The case is devoid of sensational nourishes and the divorce is asked on the statuatory ground of abandonment Sidener is now in California.

The annual reunion of Co. H, PJOth Indiana Regiment, was-freld to-day at the home of Win. 11. Steele, near Yountsville. The yard and house were beautifully decorated with flags, and everything was done to make the occasion enjoyable to those present. The time before dinner was spent in eciting stories of the war, about battles and foraging raids, and many were the incidents brought out. When dinner was announced, the guests appeared to be abundantly able to eat what was prepared by Mrs. Steele. \fter dinner Capt. C. W. Elmore, on behalf of the company, presented Mrs. Steele with a beautiful chair, and reponded in a pleasant manner, assuring her hearers that she could never do enough to repay the soldier boys for their services in saving the country. All told there were sixty persons present. It was decided that the next eunion be held at the home of W. 11.

Frauds of $4,000,000.
MEMPHIS, Tenn., Aug. 30.—It has developed that, the investigation into the delinquent taxes is expected to show that the frauds reach a total of 14.000,000 and cover a period of ten years. Comptroller Harris in an interview stated that the state authorities had decided to enforce the paj-uientof this enormous sum. The grand jury hns indicted County Clerk P. J. Quigley and License Inspector Joseph Theirs for neglect of duty.

Last Sunday was the close of the first year of Rev. Worrall's pastorate of the M. E. church at this place and on Monday a few of his many friends showed him their appreciation of his labors by presenting him with a good wholesome rocking chair. .Tesse Morrison and.lirn HutJer had a regular monkey and parrot time at the saw mill Tuesday. First blood reported for Morrison, but Uutler finally caught him on the ily and last blood was declared for Hutler. The light was declared a draw.
