Till-: Illinois Democracy endorses AIigelil. Al'.gvld is an anarchist, pure anil simple.

•Sknatoi: ItiticK is right in savingthat there is no necessity of holding- a Democratic State convention in Ohio this year and it would be ditlicult to name any other Northern State in which there is anything- to be gained by such a proceeding.

•Con. Mi Kini-kv states the case succinctly and forcibly when he says that "the Democratic Administration and (.'onpress hii.e brought blight to everything but the Republican part}-." but he should also add that the Sugar Trust has also escaped the general visitation of misfortune.

W1IAT MAN'N'Kl! OF COI.I.IX.!•: TO SELECT. 1 believe, says Thomas Davidson in the .Inly /-'"nun. that most boys who find themselves in a position to do so will go to college. Nor will they be wrong iu doing so: for. notwithstanding all the drawbacks of our colleges: their want of definite unitary aim and ideal: their half-mediu'val, half-pro-fessional curricula the dry, uninspiring formalism and useless erudition of much of the teaching the easy Philistinism or dreary pessimism of many of the older teachers: the pert, callow

Ccrnianism of many of the younger ones the boyishness of many of the students: their smug foppishness and stupid devotion to half-brutal games and half-silly girls.—notwithstanding all this and much more, there are elements in college life which the youth who aims at free manhood cannot afford to overlook. It is at college that the yonnir man who by discipline, study and travel has attained self-con-trol. an earnest view of life, and a large, generous outlook can best put these qualities to a practical test, by .mingling on free and easy terms with .'•men of his own age, entering into intimate relations with them, and comparing their aims with his own. He is now old enough to have definite views and purposes, but not too old to learn how they must be modified in order to be serviceable in the actual world. And nowhere can he learn this sooner or better than at college.

It is natural enough to suppose that the value of college life is due to what is done in the solitary study and in the class-room, whereas in truth it is due mainly to the social and friendly relations which the studentsestablish with each other.

Accordingly, the wise parent, in trying to select a college for iiis son, wi ask first, not where the most learned professors are (still less, of course, where tin.' best baseball team is. or where most sons of millionaires congregatel), but where the tone of social life is purest and manliest: where the. young men behave neither as young monkeys nor as rakes: where the conditions for complete moral anatomy are most fully established. At the same time he will ask what college best understands its business,—which is to impart that culture, intellectual and moral, which is essential to free manhood, and does not attempt to forestall the university by dabbling in professional know-edge or erudition.

HKMOI ItATIC "SAVIXfJ" ON PENSIONS. Apropos the treatment of the old soldiers in the matter of pensions by those who hold the upper hand and are inimical to the veterans, Representative Lacey (Iowa. R.), said last week in on interview: "If anything has been 'saved' on pensions this year it is because the new cases have received no attention, while nature has assisted them to get rid of the old ones by death. The work of this Congress upon private pension bills is characteristic of the Administration. During the last month y'Jl private pension bills have been introduced. But three have become laws. One of these was for a soldier of the Seminole war, another for the daughter of a Revolutionary soldier, the third was for a sur

vivor of the Mexican war. aged 101. years. None was-for the civil war. Notice that. At this tini-' 41 House private bills arc tied up in the Senate, and the House reciprocates by holding 21 Senate bills of this character. The situation does not look very encouraging for the old soldier. Our Friday night pension sessions are almost failures. The attendance is not large, and if anything is passed it must be by unanimous consent. The Republicans, have submitted and help to pass all the bills reported from the Pension Committee, which provide for the Southern soldiers who fought in the Mexican and Indian wars. l!ut when it comes to acting up the claims of the Northern soldiers. .lones, of Virginia: Stallings, of Alabama, and Talbert. of South Carolina, block legislation by demanding a ijtiorum. As a quorum is not present at any of thpse meetings, our bills are killed by these brigadiers."

PLAIN SPOKEN.

Th© tiood-Natured CrltlcUm of WellMeaning Nrl^hbor. The amount of plain speaking that people will bear from one of whose good will they are assured is sometimes a surprise to others. In "Recollections of My Mother." Susan Lesley says that her mother had the greatest affection for both David Lee Child and his wife, the gifted Lydia Maria, but was often much tried with the amount of lime, hard labor and money which Mr. Child expended on scheme after scheme, none of which ever succeeded.

One afternoon Mrs. Child came in to spend a quiet afternoon with my mother. They sat with their sewing and knitting at the west window, while I sat with one or two friends in the hall near the open door. There had been a long silence, when we heard my mother say: "Mrs. Child, can you tell ma what is the last thing that your husband is engaged in?''

An amused smile played over Mrs. Child's face. "Yes, Mrs. Lyman he is carting stone for the new railroad." "O-o-h!" said iny mother. Another pause then: "Mrs. Child, how much do you suppose Your husband loses on every load of stone he carts to the railroad?"

Another amused look on the dear Lvdia Maria's face, and she answered cheerilj-: "Well, Mrs. Lvman, as near as 1 can compute it, he must lose about ten cents on every load." "Oh—well—now—Mrs. Child," said my mother, in the bravest and most cheerful tone, "if your husband has got hold of any inuocent occupation by which he only loses ten cents on a load, for heaven's nake encourage him in it."

She had little patience with people who backed down in emergencies, and considered it her duty to stiffen them up a little. She never had to go far to find an illustration "to point her moral and adorn her tale." Some good neighbor's example would instantly come to mind. "Look over the way at my neighbor Hunt's front yard," she would say "see that splendid hydrangea, that elegant smoke bush, that buckthorn hedge, all in tlie most perfect order, and all kept so by her own hands. Always she has sickness, sorrow, death at every turn something sad and unexpected. But who ever dreamed of Mrs. Hunt's abdicating? She couldn't doit."

fDDleMantlr Kftectlre.

A striking and decidedly unpleasant advertisement lately placed in some of the Brooklyn street cars is an excellent representation of a man's hand holding a five-chambered loaded revolver, with the muzzle trained upon anyone looking at it. The ends of the bullets may be seen in the chambers and the forefinger of the hand seems to press nervously on the hair trigger. No matter where you may sit in the car the invisible man has the drop on you and the menaoing black barrel points square between your eyes. "You may laugh at the notion," said a passenger the other day as he moved over into the far cornerof the opposite seat, 'but that picture makes me nervous. I've lived in the far west among the mining camps, but I'm uneasy all tb« time I'm in the car."

The reader of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitution disease, requires a constituional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly on the blood and invcous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers, that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials.
