KEITH-COLE.
The MHt-rlHite of Two Estimable Young l'eople Occurs Thin Morning.
Ora L. Keith, of West Branch, Iowa, was happily married this morning at 10:30 o'clock to Miss Marguerite Cole, lit the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. Cole, just northwest of the city. The residence was very elaborately and very beautifully adorned for the nuptial event and on all sides was a great profusion of both cut flowers and potted plants—marguerites, roses and vines prevailing. The marriage service was a beautifully simple one. there being J110 attendants and the bride being attired in a most becoming tan tailor made traveling dress. The service was pronounced by Rev. K. B. Thomson, of the First Presbyterian church, and [after the ceremony a sumptuous wedding dinner was served the guests. The happy couple were made the recipients of numerous elegant presents including several handsome checks from the families of both bride and groom.
At 1 o'clock Mr. and Mrs. Keith left for Chicago and will go thence to Racine. Wis., by boat. After a visit with the parents of the groom in Vinton Iowa, they will repair to their future home in West Branch, Iowa, where the groom, who is a most excellent and popular young man. is engaged in a large jewelry business. Mr. Keith takes with him as his wife an estimable young lady who is loved and esteemed by all who know her.

of the Kpworth Meeting.
The linal session of the district convention of Epwort'i Leagues was concluded this morning at half past tenj Dr. West explained in detail the idea in buying an eighty-acre farm on the island of Singapore. It was in order that the converts might have a home. When a native becomes a Christian he is unable to rent laud from the unconverted lieu then and is thus thrown out of home and employment. One acre is enough to support a family so that this land will support eighty families. The Crawfordsville district of the Methodist church has undertaken to buy this land for Mr. West and when Dr.Tucktr went on the platform last evening to ask for subscriptions there were twen-tv-tliree acres yet to be paid for at the low price of S3.7.1 an acre. The different Leagues rjuiekly assumed responsibility for these twenty-three acres. Hefore adjourning a telegram of good will was sent the .State convention of Epworth Leagues at Peru and the usual resolutions of thanks were adopted.
Last evening after a song service led by Frank Davis there were in addition to Dr. Tucker's remarks addresses by Kev. J. (i. Campbell and Rev. M. 11. Appleby and two songs by a male quartette composed .of Charles Mclutyre. Omer Cox, Leon llro we and A. A. McCain.
Free Kindergarten* a* a Work, The free kindergarten under consideration by the ladies of the \V. C. T. U. is striet'y amission work. It is to provide the two years of kindergarten training for the children of the poor citizens of Crawfordsville who can not have such training as matters now stand. That the kindergarten should be a part of our public school system we earnestly believe, and that it will be in another year we valiantly hope. With a law to enforce this desire there is every prospect of success if some energetic work is done. We call upon all men and women interested in making our city a better and nobler place to '"help those women."
About That Kenee,
To the? Editor The Journal. It is stated in yesterday's JUMJNAI. that it was claimed that Mr. MeConnell had zealously fenced up a goodly portion of the street. It is carefully not stated who made the claim. I believe that I know where the lines of my lot and of the center of the street should be. and knowing this I will state that my new iron fence is now further from the proper center of College street or (irant avenue than any other fence or property lines on either side of said streets along their entire lengths. lint don't give the name of your informer.

The scheme mentioned in Monday's •loritN'AI. for an October racing meet at the Crawfordsville fair grounds i.s meeting with favor on all sides. Said a well known horseman this morning:
I believe that by putting forth the proper effort the purses necessary to insure the success of the meet can be raised without dillleulty. .Such a plan, if carried out would be of great benelit. not only to those interested but to the town and county as well. There is no reason why Crawfordsville should not be right at the top."

th£ tariff.
Senator 11111 OfTer* More laconic Tal Ameudmentn. WASHINHTOX, June 27. In the senate Senator Hill jdem N. Y.) withdrew his tariff bill amendment to exempt rom taxation the Income of United States bonds, so exempted by tho law ot their Issuance, and he suggested to make the clause read "the principal and interest of which are, by the law of their issuance," etc. That suggestion was accepted by Senator Vest on the part of the finance committee and tho clauso was so modified.
Then Senator Hill said he had offered his amendment last Saturday to call attention to tho fact that $0S5,000,000 of property was by this clauso taken out of the taxable property of tho country. Ho then offered an amendment to lnolude within the exemption tho bonds of a state, county, municipality, or town, and he made an argument iu support of that amendment.
Discussion on the constitutionality of a national tax on state or municipal bonds continued for some time, and then a vote was taken on Senator Hill's amendment. It was lost, 25 to 80. Senators Gray, Hill and I'ugh (dems.) voted with tho republicans for the amendment and Senator Pettigrew (rep.) and the populists against It.
Senator Hill then modified his amendment so as to confine the exemption to state bonds. Lost, 87 to tJO.
Senator Hill then moved to strike out the provision for a tax on personal property acquired by gift or inheritance. Lost, 20 to 84.
Senator Vest's amendment excluding in the calculation of tho Incomes of banks, banking institutions, trust companies, life, fire and other insurance companies, railroad, canal, telephone, telegraph and other companies, actual operating and business expenses, losses and interest on bonded and other Indebtedness was agreed to.
A committee amendment was adopted providing: "The tax shall not apply to suites, counties, or municipalities nor to corporations, compilules or associations organized ami conducted solely for charitable, religious or cducntluuul pur, poses. including fruternal l.enellctur ,- societies, orders or associations operatlni upoc the lodKe system and providing for tlit payment of life, sick, accident mid other bencllts to tho members of such societies, orders and associations, itnd. dependents of such members: no.r to I'm1 stocks, shares, funds or securities held i»y any ildicuary or trustee for charitable, religious or educational purposes: ir.r to the loans made by bulldiiiRand loan associations to iheii shureliulders for the purpose oi cmtbliiu.' then, to provide for themselves homes: nor to such savings banks, savings institutions or societies as shall (1) have no stockholders or member, except depositors amino capital except deposits: (2i shall not receive deposits to an gate amount in any one year of more than*l.(* from the same depositor: :b shall not allow an accumulation or total of deposits by any one depositor exceeding Sici.ooo, tl) shall actually divide and distribute t.o its depositors ratably to deposits all the earnings over the necessary and proper expenses of sm-h bank, institution or society, except such, as shall b? applied to surplus and (5) shall not possess it any form a surplus fund exceeding !0 per cent of its aggregate deposits.""
Senator Allison moved to add to section 5'J the words: "And nothing herein shall apply to any corporation, company or association having a paid uj: capital of less than S10.000."
Without acting upon the amendment, the senate adjourned.
