Democratic authority. It says: "If the sugar trust will make out a list of the newspaper men it wants bulldozed and bullyragged into silence it can re lv on the Democratic Senate to do the -rest."
'I'm: low price of wheat shows no feature of possible improvement. It is offered to Europe, by other countries than this, at prices which render com petition impossible Argen tine wheat is offered in Loudon at 51 cents. An Odessa letter says that Russia is overproducing wheat. Last year's crop was the largest production in Russia for many years, and the granaries and railway stations are full of cereal grains. Nothing but a heavy reduction in the world's production will bring the price of wheat up.
Tiik Oregon State election on Mon day resulted in a brilliant Republican vie lory. .The Re bl ica eand ida te for I'loverhor was elected by about IT.obu plurality, and the balance of the State ticket by correspondingly large figure^. lioth Republican candidates for Congress are elected by increased majorities. The Legislature is large!}' Republican in both branches, thus insuring the return of Senator Dolph to the Senate. The Republicans received large accessions from both the. Democratic and Populistic ranks.
Ex Cosimissioxkh of Navigation 1!a i'ls. according to the Sorutl Eruiiiu/h/vf for June, sees in the fact that the Canadian Pacific Railway is the first of the American railways to span the oceans on either side with its steamer lines to Liverpool, llong Kong and Australia, only another proof of the :energy with which the Hritish subsidy .system has taken the carrying trade from the I'nited States. If the railroads owned the cargoes they would own the steamers. Hut the free trade folly has destroyed our ocean marine and is now seeking to undermine our coasting trade and control our railwavs.
To the Editor of The Journal: l'lease answer in to-day's .JonixAl. which two of the three Populists in the I'nited Slates Senate voted in the interest of the sugar trust'.' Also, about what per cent, of the anarchists in the I nited States are of American birth and what per cent of foreign birth?
M. L. li.
Alien", of Nebraska, and Kyle, of South Dakota, voted in the interest of the sugar trust, while Peit'er, of Kansas. voted against. To your second question no statistics are at hand, but judging from the unpronounceable names of the anarchistic leaders we should not hesitate to say that W per cent, of them are foreigners. V-V
Tiik sugar trust owns the Democratic party, horns, hoof, hide and tallow. •The sale was made for J.'.oo.ooo, and the goods have just been delivered by Voiliees. Corman. I'.riee A- Co. This bargain and sale is the most shameful and unblushing sacrifice of the people's interest for the benefit of a combine that was ever made by the American Congress. The McKinley law placed sugar on the free list. The Gorman law provides a duty on it of one cent a pound. The duty, however, will not go into effect until January 1, IS'.t.'i. I'.v that time all this year's sugar will have been grown. The sugar planters of this country will doubtless hold most of their sugar till after Jar.. 1 to get the effect of the 1-cent rise which will follow the imposition of the duty, and that, in addition to the cents per pound bounty, will practically give theiu a present of :t cents a pound. Hut the Cuban and other foreign planters will sell their sugar at once. A large part of it has already been contracted for by the trust. It will be grown and the trust will import it all before .Ian.
I. 1 s'.i:,, free of duty. With the newyear the price will jump I cent a pound. The equivalent of- the duty and I cent a pound on the importations, based on the importations of last veur,'will amount to about S.it.iHKUXMi. and that SO.Olio.ooii will eome out of the pockets of the public.

Alpha and Omega
These two words perfectly describe the events that will take place this week in the lives ot twenty-one of our rising generation. This week twenty-one young ladies and gentlemen bid adieu to school life and push out into the cold and merciless world to earn their own living. Let us hope thac their fondest expectations may be realized and more. That they may be model young men and women, ornaments to society and shining lights each in their respective vocations. From earlier times than the date of the Roman Empire it has been customary to have ceremonies of pomp and splendor to usher new warriors into the battle of lite. So it will be this week. We will each try to out-do the other in attendance on the entertainments given honoring
