••Tin-: AYES 1IAVK IT." The Republican county convention of last Saturday will »-o down in history as one of the most harmonious and smoothest running' assemblages of party politicians that ever met in the county. The arrangements were perfeet and the proceedings from start finish were characterized by the utmost harmony. There was a little friction at the starting up of the machine but the cogs were soon adjvsled and from that time on everything ran like clock work. Much credit is due to the committee for the system it adopted in seating the delegate ., the otlicers. the press and spectators, ineluding the ladies. Kverything AVIIS done that could be done to contribute to the comfort of the audience and the expedition of business. The committee on organization made a happy selection in .lohn Witigate as perma nent president, lie proved to be the man for the occasion, llis speech, at* eepting the position, put everybody in good humor, and his rulings were prompt, impartial and satisfactory to all. The actual business of the con vent, ion. the balloting for nominations, occupied about two hours, which, all things considered, .was a dispatch.of business unprecedented when it is remembered that it required twenty ballots to complete the ticket. Of the result of the labors of the convention the ticket speaks for itself. It is composed of some of tlie best men of the county. It is a good ticket singly and in all its parts. The delegates labored under great difliculty in making a choice from so many good men wh presented themselves as candidates for the various positions. But they made their choice and everybody should be satisfied. There may be personal disappointments and probably are. but these disappointments are inseparable from politics. It is no reflection on the character or tlie running qualities of any defeated candidate that some other man should be chosen. The mail who gets left should remember that thf man who gets there is equally as good as himself, and the more philosophy he mixes in with his defeat the greater he will be in the eyes of the pulilie.
Hut to the personnel of the ticket:" Capt. E. 'I1. McCrea. the nominee for Representative, is a citizen of foal Creek township. He is a farmer Inoccupation. is popular with the people, progressive in his ideas, and will represent the county in the Stale Legislature with an ability that will reflect credit on his constituency.
Duinont Kennedy, the nominee for Prosecuting Attorney, is the youngest son of Hon. 1'. S. Kennedy. Jle is one of the rising young attorneys at the bar and his future is bright for a successful career. Disabilities are of a high order and

guine that he will make his mark as a Prosecutor. William M. White, who carried off the nomination for Auditor, is a selfmade young man. His qualifications for the otlice are of a superior order. He has a wide acquaintance throughout the county and none know him but to esteem him for his true and generous manhood.
William Johnson, the nominee for Treasurer, is an old citizen of .Scott, township. He is a farmer and stock dealer and is widely and favorably known among the farmers for his' rugged honesty and fair dealing. His name is a synonym for integrity.
Charles E. Davis is the present Sheriff. He was nominated by acclamation. The fact that lie had no opposition was a concession to his abilities and to his faithfulness as an otlicer.
Harvey K. Wynecoop, the nominee for Surveyor, is a self made young man. By his own unaided efforts he has worked his way through Wabash College and will graduate in .June with high honors. As a hustler he is a success, and will bring to the discharge of liis duties tt thorough knowledge of his profession. 'if'j'Dr. Paul

Coroner. is one of the most popular physicians in the county. He is a son of the late Col.John M.liareus and was reared in the north part of the county. That he will make a good race goes without saving.
Hannibal Trout, the nominee for Commissioner from the Eastern District. is known to almost every man in Montgomery county. He luis twice represented ^Montgomery county iu the Legislature, aud is known as a man of good judgment, of careful business habits, and will make an ideal Commissioner.
Ilenry W. Harding, who carried olV the nomination for Commissioner from the Middle District over three other excellent men, is a successful farmer living two miles south of the city. He is careful aud painstaking in all business matters and will look after the interests of tlie county with the same care that he looks after his own.
Such is the personnel of the Republican county ticket. Let the Democrats match it if thev can.

Lives.
pathetic incident occurred in the waifs' school in Pittsburgh a few weeks ayo. One of the teachers brought a beautiful red rose to school, which, holding up before the scholars, she asked: "Now children, how many of you know what this is?'' Nearly every little one shook his head, to indicate ignorance. One small boy and couple of little girls piped out. with great importance: "It's a posie, please, ma'am." !ut no one had ever heard of a rose. Most of the children had never seen one before. The teacher put it in a glass of water to preserve It. and when school was dismissed each child was rendered supremely blissful by the gift of a tiny pedal. As they filed out of the door, each little waif clutched his treasure tightly in his small hand, while he murmured softly to himself the namc: "1'itty wose, pitty wose!"
Fr«'e Wine.
There is such a tremendous quantity of wine in Spain this year that they absolutely do not know what to do with it. Good red wines are being sold for three farthings a quart, and even at that price there are not enough purchasem to take it all, and in many places the wine growers are simply throwing it away, because they nave no room to keep it and cannot sell it. Near I.iria, in Yalentia, a vineyard proprietor put out on the high road a little cart with a barrel of wine on the top of it, bearing the Inscription: "Wanderer, drink as much as you like, but^do not forget to turn off the tap,"
