Till: I'01*1'I.I STIC C'OXA KKT. The question before the people now is. "Has John L. (ioben renounced the Democratic party and cast his fortune with the I'opulists?" From the evidence presented it appears that Mr. (Ioben was present at the I'opulistie State Convention on Thursday and participated in the proceedings. Ilis name was first presented as a candidate for Auditor of State. The charge was made on the floor of the convention that Mr. lloben was not a tried and sincere Populist, and that he was there only to betray the cause and its principles. This was indignantly denied by the Montgomery delegation, presumably. as he was present at the convention. bv his authority. The vote was then taken but lie was most unmercifully snowed under, and another man was chosen. Hut Mr. Goben was irrepressible.. A little storm like that which had just taken place had anything but the effect to discourage liim in his efforts to show his fealty to his new found friends, as his name was then presented for the nomination for Treasurer of State. The result was similar to that for Auditor. He was simply not in it. Mr. (Ioben then made the motion to make the nomination of the successful man unanimous, which was still further proof thr he was an active participant, and the further fact that in the midst of defeat he was still loyal to his I'opulistie brethren. The question now is, will
Mr. (!oben formally withdraw his name from before the Democratic convention, and if so will he declare a renunciation of his allegiance to the Democratic party Mr. Goben has been a leading and influential Democrat, time and again having been honored with positions of trust and profit, and this latest move on his part will have a far reaching effect on the Democratic pol itics of this county.
THERE never was a greater truth uttered than when Daniel Webster in his great speech delivered in the Senate in July, 1S40, in which he showed that the tariff bill then pending narrowed and diminished our industries, and thus deprived the masses of needed employment, said
Proclaim it everywhere, and make it a proverb, that where there is work for the hands of men, there will be work for their teeth. Where there is employment there will be bread. It is a great blessing to the poor to have cheap food, but greater than that, prior to that and of still higher value, is the blessing of being able to buy food. by honest and respectable employment. Employment feeds and clothes and instructs. Employment gives health and sobriety and morals. Constant employment and well-paid labor produce, in a country like ours, general prosperity, content and cheerfulness."
Mr. Webeter took the ground that the interest of every laboring community requires diversity of occupations, pursuits and objects of industry. The more that diversity is multiplied. even extended, the better. To diversify employment is to increase employment and to enhance wages.
SEN.vron SHKK.MA.N hit the nail on the head when he said. "Free trade for all or free trade for none." This rule should be applied to all interests. Why should not the wool grower be protected as well as the sugar grower'.' Why should not the wheat grower be shown some favors in a tariff law as well as the rice grower? Why should iron ore have a duty of 40 cents per ton and lumber be placed on the free list? In other words how can a principle of discrimination be justified?
TIIE Indianapolis SentIncl is still kicking on the Senate compromise tariff bill and refuses to be comforted. It reads Senator Gorman the riot act and denounces him with such endearing terms as "arch-conspirator," "cheap confidence man" and accuses him of "deliberate falsehood.'" When the Sentinel has time to recover its breath it will feel better. When the bill becomes a law it will be the chief cuckoo in singing its praises.
•l'HK treasury gold balance is now but 852,000.000. It will soon be time for Secretary Carlisle to issue another $50,000,000 of bonds. The only capacity the Democratic party has shown since its accession to power is its capacity to increase the public debt, to prostrate the industries of the country and to create an army of :i,000,000 men and women without employment.

The great romantic four act drama, with prologue, entitled "A Strange Woman." will be presented as an opening bill Monday night. The Puzzle Solved. :'-T
Perhaps no local disease has puzzled and battled the medical profession more than tiasal catarrh. While not immediately fatal it is among the most nauseous ills the llesh is heir to, and the records show very few or no cases of radical cure of chronic catarrh by any of the many modes of treatment until the introduction of Ely's Cream Balm a few years ago. The success of this preparation has been most gratifying and surprising. No druggist is without it.
