schedule in the (iorman bill ure higher than the existing duties imposed by the McKinley law. On some fine cloths the duty is 13o and Hn per cent, while in the McKinley law the highest rate is 70 per cent. And yet the Chicago platform declared the McKinley law to be a robbery.
The
lieneral Assembly of the Pres
byterian church is now in session at Saratoga, New Vorlc. The Assembly will be anti-Hriggs in the ratio of about four to one. Among the candidates for Moderator is that of Arthur.!, lirown, D. I)., of Portland, Oregon, who will represent the Ilriggs men in the Assembly. Mr. lirown is a graduate of W abash College of the class of '71, but it is safe to say that with the anti-Hrigps sentiment which prevails among the commissioners he will be badly beaten. The indications are that botli Dr. I'.riggs and l")r. Smith will lie relegated to the rear.
Tin-, House Committee on Tensions has voted to report the'-liill increasing the rates of all pensioners of the Mexi can war and Indian war from Ss to ?]2 a month. In the meanwhile the work of cutting oil' and reducing pensions of those who served in the ivar for the I'nion goes bravely on. Any measure that will put an additional dollar in the pockets of a .Southerner will receive approval at the hands of the present House, hut any bill to facilitate the work of the Pension llureau whereby l.'nion soldiers might, be benefitted ha* its death knell sounded bv this same House Committee on Pensions which has been so liberal to the Mcxican pensioners. The only reason that can be assigned fur this liberality is that the Mexican soldiers were main ly from the Southern States.
If
the uncertainty about tariff legislation were removed, our import trade would revive, and the revenues increase largely: for the stocks of goodsofall kinds in the country, both imported and domestic, are lower than they have been for many years. When merchants and importers know exactly what the duties on imported goods will lie. they will import largely, and our own manufactorieswill start up to supply the needs of the people. The reduction of wages is rstill going on, tof course, preparing for the low tariff era that will be ushered in by the passage of the Wilson bill—if the present patchwork measure can bescalled bv the name of any one •:person. The amount of manufactured goods: in the United States has not been so lowwithin the past 20 years as it is at present.
CALIFORNIA FAIR.
From Present Indications It Will Be a Great Suooesa
Immtna. Crowd* Visit the Exposltloa Dallr Magnificent Display* ol :. Fruit and Many Novel:
Kxhlblt*
The latest reports from the California Midwinter fair state that nefeplv two hundred thousand people passed tke turnstiles during tho first two weeks of its existence. This faot establishes the sure success of the exposition from the standpoint of attendance. and the verdict of the thousands who make up this grand total has been unanimous in favor of the success oI the exposition from every point ol view.
Since the opening day, January 97, no special effort has been made to draw the crowds. It ha9 been the aim of the exposition management to lot the many features of the exposition speak for themselves, and exclamations of surprise atid satisfaction have been heard on every hand. The exhibits ate now praetleafty all in position. There are no holes in the floor, so to speak, and it is noticeable by those who Visited the (Treat Columbian exposition that even the exhibits which were seen there appear to have token on new form in San Francisco, and th$ exhibitors have undoubtedly profited by the experience gained on the shore of Lake Michigan. The largest spaces in the center of the groat floor of tho manufactures and liberal arts building are occupied by France, Gerinany, Russia and Italy. Each of these countries is represented by a display of artistic and useful manufactures whloh has never before been seen outside of the great Columbian exposition, and 111 jnost instances the displays brought from there have been augmented new supplies brought across the lantic and across the continent especially for this display.
But in the midst ol all this that is not new to everybody, there is so much in the Midwinter exposition that Is universally unique and novel that there is nothing of the "old story" about It. The American section Is particularly prolific In novelty, and it tfooupies this largest space assigned to any ohe oountry, so that the international character of the exposition by no means shuts out the glorification of home Industries in the beautiful Industrial fair.
The Palace of Fine ^.rts has already proved to be a revelation. Such a display of pictures has never before been seen in this part of the world. This department did not depend on Chicago for its pictures, though it got a great many of the best that were shown there. On tho walls of this building are hung later pictures by well-known Amerloan, French and German artists, and prominent among them are something like a hundred of the works of the best artists of the Pacific coast. Connoisseurs say that the Midwinter Art Palace Is the best arranged picture gallery that the world has ever seen, and it certainly 1b well adapted for the purpose to which it is put.
In the eyes of eastern visitors tho citrus display naturally attraots the most attention. It seems to be good for eastern eyes to encounter a pear as big as a babj-'s head and peaches almost as large, to sa^- nothing of so many oranges in heaps and piles and buildings that there is a great gleam of yellow before them all the while. The rivalry between the northern &nd the southern citrus fairs, both of which are held in the exppsitipti grounds, has been happily productive ol the best displays tn this line that have ever been made, even in California. The buildings devoted to this class of displays are proving quite as popular ^s some of the main bx}xsitlofl buildings, and California citrus fruits are getting the best advertisement they have ever had.

usual treatment of catarrh is
very unsatisfactory, as thousands can testify. Proper local treatment is positively necessary to success, but many, if not most, of the remedies in general use afford but temorary relief. A cure certainly cannot be expected from snuffs, powders, douches and washes. Ely's Cream Halm, which is so highly commended, is a remedy which combines the important requisites of quick action, .specific curative power, witli perfect safety and pleasantness to the patient The druggists all sell it.
The Superiority.
Of Hood's Sarsaparilla Is due to the tremendous amount of brain work and constant care used in its preparation. Try one bottle and you will be convinced of its superiority. It purifies the blood which, the source of health, cures dyspepsia, overcomes sick headaches and biliousness. It is just the medicine for you.

A Dairyman's Opinion.
There is nothing I have ever used for muscular rheumatism that gives me as much relief as Chamberlain's Pain Halm does. 1 have been using it for about, two years—four bottles in all— as occasion required, and always keep a bottle of it in my home. I believe I know a good thing when I get hold of it. and Pain iialm is the best liniment I have ever met with. W. U. AN INTERESTING SKETCH.
Nothing appeals bo strongly to a mother's affection as her daughter just budding into womanhood. Following it an instance: "Our daughter, Blanche, now IS years of age, had been terribly afflicted with nervousness, and had lost tho entire uso of her right arm. Sho was in such a condition that we had to keep ber from school and abandon her mu«Ic lessons. In fact, wo feared St. Vitas dance, and are positive bnt for an invaluable remedy sho would have had that terrible affliction. Wo had employed physicians, but she received no benefit from them. Tho first of last August she weighed bnt 75 pounds, and although she has taken onljr three bottles of Korviuo she now
fort and ease. B^o bos recovered complete use of her arm, her appetite is splendid, and no money could proenro for our daughter the health Dr. Miles' Nervine has brought her.
When my brother recommended the remedy I had no faith in patent medicines, and would not listen to him, but as a last resort he sent us a bottle, we began giving it to Blanche, and the effect was almost immediate,"—Mrs. R. R. Bullock. Brighton, N. Y.
