were always objecting to the tax levy but refused to accept a city office be cause the salary was too small or be cause it took too much time. He did not care for the objections of the bu.~ine.ss man who "could not afford to accept the office of Councilman because would hurt his business." He thought "0 was not too much to pay a Coun man and was sure that at that price very member would be working caper than any man in his employ. The oth members also spoke in favor raising salaries except Vanarsdall
M! Wilhite who were opposed to such action at this time. As the salaries had to ie fixed for two years it was general opinion that the present mpensation was too low except in he case of the Engineer. The Counilman's salary was settled first. The motion of Mr. Reynolds to make it with S1 0 for members of the Hoard of Public Improvements, was ?t. all voting- no except Reynolds and Robinson. The motion of Mr. Vanarsall to make it S100 and ?125 was also .'^t and then a compromise making all ouncilmen receive S140 was adopted 1'iie present salaries of Councilinen re SKK.i and $135.

The reases, however, do not amount to as much as the reductions made last year the expenses in this respect are still lower than they were a year ago. W are confident the people will justify the Council in the changes made last night: we are sure they were all made with the best motives for the city welfare.
A special meeting of the Council will be held next Thursday to take action on the new water works fran chise and another one next Monday night to decide about issuing $18.000 north of 'iidh for a new schoo' house.

How tbe Holy Spirit Operates ID the Conversion of Sinners.
There was another interesting service at the Christian church last night. Prof. Hawes sang a beautiful and touching solo, "X Shall Sleep With Him To-Night." The subject of Rev. Updike was "How the Holy Spirit Operates ic the Conversion of Sinners," taking for his text 1 Cor. 2:10.which reads.
But God hath revealed them unto us by His spirit, for the Spirit seareheth all things, yea, the deep things of God." He said God has arranged a great plan of salvation»for the world and in that Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith because he came into the world and completed the arrangement and went back into Heaven and sent the Holy Spirit in His name to reveal the terms of salvation and to make known unto the children of men just what they ought to do to be saved. In preaching to sinners we must make them feel that they are sinners and them how to become Christians. It would be a fearful thing to tell people that they are sinners if we did not teU them that there is a way of life and salvation, and it seems to me that it would be another fearful thing to be unable to tell a man intelligently just what he should do to be saved when he wants to know. Men should investigate this question, and they should be in earnest about it.
God has given us a revelation of His will and his goodness. Just as sure as he has revealed His attributes unto men. he has revealed the terms of salvation so clearly that it may be easily comprehended even by a child 10 years of age. There is nothing mysterious about this question. Paul says. -'And without controversy great is the mystery of goldlinesss. God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.'' These are mysteries, but there is not a mysterious saying in the entire book of Acts. Every man can if he will understand how God has revealed unto sinners the terms of salvation, telling them just what to do to be saved. The verse preceding my text says, "Eye hath not seen nor ear heard, neither have entered into rthe heart of man, things which God hath prepared for them that love him." See the wonderful provision which has made for the salvation of men. What comes next".
But God hath revealed them unto us by His spirit." How has the Holy Spirit revealed them unto us? Through the apostles of esus Christ. The coming of the Holy Spirit.was as plainly predicted as

coming of Jesus
Christ. When Brother Peter preached his first sermon upon the day of Pente cost he quotes the prediction from the prophet Joel. The 15th and 10thchapters of the gospel by John tell us just what the office of the Holy Spirit was to be. Jesus preached more particularly in regard to the office of the Holy Spirit. "If I go away I will will send you the comforter or the Spirit of truth:" It is not understood by the Bible reader that the Holy Spirit de scends upon each individual and make: certain impressions and feelings and endows with miraculous power as it did the apostles. We don't think that the Holy Spirit would make one man believe one thing and another man believe another. I do not think that this difference in belief is the result of dis honesty, but a mistake. Many people say, "I would be a Christian, but there are so many different ways I don't which is right." I answer that there is but one way, and God has revealed that way through the Holy Spirit
When I turn to God's truth I am glad to know where to read. What satis faction in 'knowing you are right, because you have done the right thing and stand upon the promises of God The Holy Spirit comes to tell a man when he is wrong or when he is right The Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit whether you are a child of God. If you refuse to hear and obey the word of God you are a child of the devil. When you are baptized it is done in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God is your father, Jesus your elder brother and the Holy Spirit jyour comforter. The Holy Spirit came to whom"? Where is the mistake? It is in the idea that it comes to work independently of the word of God. I don't believe the Holy Spirit will come and teach a sinner what the Bible does not teach. Pete and Paul and those other apostles after receiving the baptism, were infallible in all their teachings, and in all their decisions. Ilere is where
I suppose they get the idea of the fallibility of the Pope. The Bible is very plain to tell where and when that baptism took place. How were the three thousand converted on the day of Pentecost? The Holy Spirit came upon the preacher and the apostle who revealed it unto them. It was not what the people felt but what they heard that made them cry out, "Men and brethren what shall we do? "The gospel is the power of God unto salvation." Will you believe it and obey it?

Mrs. Harriet K. Sloan Assign* For the Benellt orHer Creditor*.
OThis morning Mrs. Harriet R. Sloan made an assignment for the benefit of her creditors, naming Henry B. Hulett as assignee. Mrs. Sloan has owned the grocery on north Washington street which has been operated by her husband, Henry Sloan. The assets and liabilities are not stated but it is thought the stock will invoice about $4,000 and that there are over S2.'.KK in accounts. The liabilities will proba" bly be in excess of this. The failure is quite a surprise to the community and is generally regretted. It was caused by hard times and a failure to collect numerous accounts. Mr. Sloan has been too liberal with his customers to be jnst to his own interest, and mampeople who received credit abused the trust and avoided payment.
BURGLARS ABOUT.
Three Uonges and a Freight Depot Rifled by Beckless Itaseal?.
Burglars were abroad last night at an early hour and before midnight they had gone through three residences, the Big Four freight depot and had broken into half a dozen freight cars. The residences burglarized were those of D. J. Woodward, W. W. Watson and Warren Ashley, all three in a row on east Jefferson street. They were in only the rear parts of the Ashley and Watson residences and from each they stole a lot of working clothes. From the Woodward residence they abstvacted David's Sunday duds and his new macintosh. When Howard Ashley came in about 11 o'clock he heard a noise in the back part of the house but ascribing it to other causes than burglars he went to bed only to learn in the morning how close he came to catching a big fat burglar. The thieves rifled the Big
Four freight depot and half a dozen freight cars on the Big 1- our tracks stealing what they could carry off. This morning officer Grimes found east of town a pile of cast off duds which the persons stealing better clothes from the residences had probably discarded after changing. In the pocket of one of the old coats was a paper warranting the bearer to be an "honest deaf and dumb gentleman in need of assistance."
