Fire at the !N utt House.

I.ast night about midnight two colored girls in the rear of the Nutt House discovered afire breaking out in kitchen and gave the alarm. The fire department was called out but the blaze was extinguished by the bucket brigade. The fire originated in the charcoal box and had burned a large hole in the floor. It was creeping up the wall and had it not been discovered just when it was would doubtless have resulted disastrously for the popular hostelry.

At Covington.

The band is one of the finest in Illinois.

The smallpox is receiving serious consideration from Oovernor Matthews and the State Hoard of Health. Their attention is directed to the southern part of the State. The people of that section have been somewhat uneasy, fearing' that wfien the eominoneal army left Chicago and crossed the State, the disease might be aided in its spread. The people anted the authorities to prevent the army from entering the State, and asked the governor to issue a proclamation. The State board had ordered that all the armies be vaccinated, and, as the cities 011 the borders have been nforcing the rule, it was not thought necessary to issue the proclamation. The Illinois State board was communicated with, the Indiana board siring that the Chicago army be properly looked after before being allowed to enter the State. The army now in Indiana, and the Illinois board lias not been heard from.

The State Hoard of Health does not know that Randall's army has been accinated, but it probably has not. It should have been inquired into at Hammond, where the army entered the State, but this, the board thinks, has been neglected, since the freedom of the city has been extended to Ranall and his following1. An inquiry was received from the Ohio State Hoard of Health, asing if the army had been vaccinated.

Il(ln't Know It Was Loaded. Mack Thompson is the handsome and accommodating clerk at Thompson's second hand store. It is the prerogaive of Mack to put the lounge and shovels out in front of mornings, to dust the diamonds in the show case and exhibit the stock of revolvers to enterprising customers who contemplate suicide or matrimony. Last evening about six or seven gloams after the. gloaming a hungry cadaverous looking man whom Mack at once put down as probable suicide shambled in and asked for "a pop." Mack reached into the show case and pulled a big number forty-two and holding the rusty side ibscuied he began to expatiate

To illustrate Mack pulled the trigger. Bang! went the gun and a great big bullet buried itself in the wood work of Mit Scott's window. Mack didn't know it was loaded.

Another Fry.

Indianapolis Xcws: A dispatch from 'rawfordsville states that Fry was born and reared there, lie joined the egular army, after which nothing was heard of him. Fry says: 'l was never in Crawfordsville in my life, and I never served in the regular army, it must be some other Fry. 1 don't aspire to the honor of being a citizen of Indiana. I was born in Keokuk. I went from there to New York, from there to Panama and afterward to California, where 1 settled, living most of the time in Sacramento."

J. R. Ross, who knew Fry of Crawfordsville, called at the Circle House lie did not recognize the "General."

A l'air.

The Attica Laltjcr vouches for a lieu owned by Mrs. Milton Rupert, living outside the limits of that city, which fowl has no use for nests, but daily climbs in a tree and drops an egg. The limb is fifteen feet from the ground and the hen has been doing this peculiar thing for several weeks and not an egg has been broken.

The same same paper says that (lid eon LeQk, of Davis township, last Sun day gathered ten bushels of mushrooms on his farm in less than an hour. The Lcd'jcr is entitled to the joint professorship in the lien and mushroom sections of the Attica Annanias club.

Score One for Vory.

A special from Terre Haute, says: The Democratic committee of this Congressional district met here to-day and fixed the place for the convention at Covington, Fountain 'county, and July as the date. The significance in selecting Covington lies in the fact that it is the most inconvenient place of access for Terre Haute people. The The Terre Haute Democrats of the Lamb following, while not openly opposing Rrooksliire's renominatiou, are not his friends.

Allcock's Porous Plaster is composed of purely vegetable ingredients and is absolutely harmless. It assists nature in her own efforts to heal and invigorate, and imparts strength to the whole system.

Many preparations contain strong chemical and mineral substances which produce an injurious effect, not only upon the skin, but upon the whole system, although at first tliey seem very teneficial, on account of their powerful action and temporary effect upon the surface.

When purchasing a plaster do not only ask for Allcock's, but make sure that you get it.

Brandreth's Pills are purely vegetable.
