Modjeska fills a place on the American stage that time can never effaceThe page that she is making in its history is tilled with words of tenderness, gentleness, art and naturalness. Aside from the fact that she is peerless in her chosen calling and simulates every phase of passion incident to the feminine heart, she lias an additional accomplishment in that she is a master of stage technique and combines in a degree greater than, perhaps, any other woman of the stage, the position of inventor, producer and player.

Her forthcoming engagement will be fraught with more interest than any she lias ever played in this city, for it will bo her last appearance prior to tour of Europe, after which sho contemplates making a farewell American tour. ltovv Mart Kcr 11 o'xtl,1 Died. The Clarlisville, Ark., speak ing of-tlie assassination of Mart Ker noodle, late of this city, says:

There are many conflicting reports in regard to the difficulty, and it is difficult to get at the matter. From the best information it seems that about noon on Saturday. Rogers and Kernoodle had a few words in the barber shop about something that took place at a dance the previous night, that Rogers passed out of the shop marking as he went that any one who said anything about hiin was a d—11 rascal. When he had gone Kernoodle remarked that he would have to swal-low-that or he would cut his throat from ear to ear with a razor. Some one reported this threat to Rogers.who immediately went home, armed himself and returned to the shop. lie called Kernoodle out in front of the shop, and, after passing a few words. Kernoodle, some say. struck Rogers others say he did not. At any rate, they clinched, and while in this posture Rogers drew a pistol, punched it against the breast of his adversary and tierd. Kernoodle turned and ran into the shop, and as he went it Rogers lired a second shot into his back, lie fell and expired in a few seconds, both balls liaviug gone entirely through his body. Kernoodle was quite a fleshy man, and while waiting for a train Sunday night the body was found to be so^fleeoiupo.'-ed that it was considered impracticable to ship it. and Kernoodle was buried about midnight on Sunday night.

Tin? CaiHlitlnte for icr- I'ri'-ldiMit. People, are very forgetful. They have to think pretty hard to remember the vice-presidential candidate two campaigns back, and yet he was pretty well advertised at the time. It has been truly said that the time to advertise is all the time. In business there is no such thing as standing still. A business man must go forward or he will fall back. Even if you do just as much business this year as you did last, some other fellow is doing more business and he is getting ahead of you. And yet it is true that, money is wasted in advertising, because thu advertiser is not careful in selecting his mediums, lie should not try to get in all the papers. Better concentrate 55100 on one or two good papers than scatter it over a half a dozen some of which are sul-e to be almost worthless. TIIK Joi itXAi. claims to have a larger circulation -than any paper published in Montgomery county for both its Daily and Weekly editions. Proof is always at hand for those interested. STATK
