These lectures will be for both ladies and gentlemen, and ae the admission will be free it will bo a rare opportunity to hear two excellent lectures delivered by a man who knows how to handle his sabjects. Lecture to commence at 8 o'clock. —The scheme of publishing the names of donors to the Charity Organization is being talked. THIS JOTJRNAI, has not the slightest objection to doing this if it would help the cause along. But we believe the average person who gives a chicken or nn old pair of socks does not care to have the fact heralded abroad. It would be much easier and perhaps more productive of good to print the name of every person in good circumstances who refnses to assist in the sweet work of charity.
The Leader In the Jewelry Line
A Warning.
A citizen furnishes us with a copy of the last public statement made by Pate and Stires, the Danville murderers, who were hanged last week. This address should be read and pondered by every boy in Montgomery county. It will do them good. The address is as follows:
AB the day of our execution draws nearer we feel the great burden of guilt that rests upon us and to some degree, at least, the load of sorrow we have brought to innocent ones. We are deeply soiry for the awful orime committed and the many thoughtless and rash acts and words since our capture. The robbery was premeditated, but never the murder. It was the result of the excitement of the moment. We bear no ill will against any friends of the murdered man, nor against anyone that in any way assisted in our capture and sentence. We buiieve our sentenoe to be just, and now look upon it all as for the best, for if we had not been caught perhaps death would have come without any opportunity to prepare for it. We believe in a forgiving God and call upon all who thus believe to pray for us that at the bar of Infinite Justice we may not be coudemned.
We want to make an appeal to all boys and young men to beware of all half dime literature, for by reading such we were started in the path of sin and crime. Why can't,this be stopped? Beware of the saloon, with all its damning influence, for only evil flows from them. Why are they permitted in a Christian country? Think of us and our fate and leave these terrible places aloue. We ask a sorrowful widow and an outraged public to forgive us of onr crime, as we also ask God to forgive us.
HARVEY PATE. FIUNK Sri itt.
Pleasantly Entertained.
Miss Hazdl Griest, the pretty little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Griest. was four years old yesterday r.ud in honor of this noted event her many little friends were invited to her home on west Market street, where they were delightfully entertained. It will be remembered thatHazel was the little tot that carried off the honors of the evening at the children's day exercises at the Christian church fast June, the general verdict being that she was the best speaker of the evening, and it was plainly shown that her ability to entertain was quite equal to her ability to speak us all had such a delightful time. Mrs. Griest being an expert in the culinary art a more tempting repast is seldom served. Hazel received many presents. All went away wishing her many twppy letums.
Death of Mrs. Howard Berganl Mrs. Howard Sergent died yesterday afternoon of consumption at the home of her parents in Danville, Ind. Mrs. Sergent has been sick eome time Bnd her death while not unexpected falls heavily upon her bereaved relatives. Her maiden name was Edith Harlan and she leaves au infant son as a comfort to those from whom ehe has been parted by death. The funeral will ooeur tomorrow.
The DePauw Ooncert.
There WM a small bat truly apprecia tive audience out at the Methodist church last evening to hear the DePauw concert company. The affair was a success from every point of view except financially. The Ex-President of the DePauw University Dies This Mormng, Special to Tho Journal.
GKRENCASTIJE, Ind., Deo. 16.1893.— Alexander Martin, D. D. LL. D„ died of pneumonia at his home in this oity this morning at three o'clock. On the 7th inst. he officiated at the wedding of Prof. Isaac Ne£F in Greenfield, contracting a cold which developed into the disease which caused his death. Dr. Martin was born in Nniru, Scotland in 1822. He held many oflioes at the hands of the Universities with whioh he wae connected. Ho was elected to the chair of Mental and Moral Science and and the Presidency of DePauw University in 1875, and held the position until 1889, when he resigned in favor of Dr. J. P. D. John. He was fpur times sent to the General M. E. Conference and elected to the Eoumenical Conference in London, and was also a delegate to the Centennial. The deceased was one of the foremost educators in the West, and occupied the chair of Mental and Moral Science at the time of his death. The funeral will occur Monday at two p. m., Bishop Joyce, probably preaohing the sermon. DePauw University is to have a vacation of a few days.
Seriously Injured.
A very distressing accident oocured yesterday afternoon at New Market, the victim being James Amentrout, the well-known grain dealer. Mr. Arinentrout was up in the elevator examining the maohinery when he was struok by a descending vessel and sustained a fall of twenty feet. He struck a oross bar and dropped into a large hopper. He was taken out and carried to his home in a helpless condition. His back is badly hurt and he suffered internal injuries besides. If he had not happened to strike in the hopper he would have fallen a sheer descent of fifty five feet. It is impossible at present to determine just how serious his injuries are.
Miss Pi.
Mr. Sweetman is a suave and polite piano tuner from Indianapolis. Beta Theta Pi is one of the Greek letter societies of Wabash College. Yesterday Mr. Sweetman arrived at the store of G. F. Hughes and smilingly began to run over the list of those who wished to have their pianos tuned. The names were arranged with the addresses and when Mr. Sweetman came to "Beta Theta Pi, over Warner's store," he stopped. His smile rather faded and he asked in a hesitating voice: "Ah, Miss Pi lives over Warner's store, does she?"
Again he looked at the name and studied it intently from several angles remarking "Why* she must ba a foreigner!"
Mr, Hughes and those present were smiling audibly but the astonished Sweetman was examining the oabalist.ic name with growing interest. Finally he suddenly broke out excitedly: "Why, dash her hide, she must be a Rooshun!"
Surprised.
Quite a number of the friends of Miss Etta Rtikestraw tendered her a very delightful surprise party last evening at the home of her parents. The affair was in honor of her sixteenth birthday. An eleg:ift supper was served nud the guests remained, enjoying themselves nntil quite a late hour.
Death of Mrs. Margaret Hester, Mrs. Margaret Hester, aged 90 years, died yesterday at the home of her son in-law, Van Sidener, just south of the aity.
