Kutered at the PoGtofflee ata Crawfordsvlllo, Indiana, as second-class matter.
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1893.
IT looks well in Kansas.
Now for Indians in 1894.
WILDCAT currenoy has been vetoed.
IT is a vole to repeal the Democratic party.
HOKE SMTTHISM has been terribly rebuked.
MoKiuiiKY is in line now for the Presidency.
MASSACHUSETTS, there she stands with 30,000 Bepnblioan plurality.
SOOTH DAKOTA, too, is in line with 15,000 Bepnblioan plurality.
IT looks very much like a Republican vear in all the Northern States.
FOR the first time since the days of Seth Low Brooklyn has a Republican mayor by 15,000.
THE people have expressed a desire for another "change." They know when they huve had enough.
QROVEB CLEVELAND, Hoke Smith, and all of their ilk have been weighed in the balance and fonnd wanting.
THK ratio between the Democrats and Republicans is more than 16 to 1. The parity seems to be diffioult to maintain.
REPUBLICANS elect a Congressman in Michigan to fill the unexpired term of Logan A. Ohipman, Democrat, who recently died.
PESVSTLVAKIA is still true to her colors, and the large Republican gains indicate a majority of 100,000. Well done, old Keystone!
MVTNAHD, the Tammany tool, has stolen election returns for the last time. He will have time' now to repent in sackcloth and ashes.
HAVING heard from the oountry the Democrats in Congress will be mnch slower than they have been to repeal the McKinley tariff law.
AND Judge Gary, too. His election by 15,000 majority in Chioago shows that that city has had enongh ot Anarchy and Anarchist Qovernors.
TUB tiger has been slain in New York and the State rolls up a Republican ma jority of 30,000, while Maynard, the election returns thief, is defeated by 100,000.
NEW JERSEY shows signs of returning reason. A Republican majority in both braaches of the Legislature indicates thai she is knooking tor admission into the Union.
CINCINNATI Tribune-. High priced times art good times cheap times are hard times. Of what avail is it if a man can buy the whole world for two bits and has not the two bits.
A RAY of light comes from Kentucky in the election ot a Republican Mayor by a majority of 3,500. Elsewhere the 'dark and bloody ground" remains wedded to its idol of Democracy.
REPUBLICANS have nothing to feel proud of in Virginia. They didn't even have a ticket in the field. Elections in the Old Dominion, like most of the other Southern States, are mere farces.
low A comes up with 30,000 to 40,000 Republican majority. The Legislature will be Republican by from 15 to 20 on joint ballot. This insures the election of a Republican United States Senator. Who says the Republican party is dead in Iowa?
As the Chicago Inter-Ocean put it it is an emphatic rebuke of Democratic free trade policy, Democratic pension hating policy, and ot the Democratic policy of selling national offices to the highest bidder, and ot paying election return robbers by gifts of places on the Supreme bench ot a great State.
THE eyes of the Nation were on Ohio, and right royally has she responded to their expectations by rolling up a plur ality for Wm. McKinley by anywhere from 70,000 to 90,000. This is the largest majority oyer a Democrat that State since John Brough defeated Vallandigham by 101,000. Three times three foi Ohio I
GROVEB has not yet placed his signa ture to the commission of Judge Jump to be Collector of this distriot, and Dan iel is in a state of mind bordering on the wrathful. It would be the Cleveland style to turn his back on his best friend. There is not a partiole of grat titude in his make-up. His treatment of the Ninety Per Cents in this State is sufflsiect proof.
THE ELECTIONS AND THEIR LESSON.
The result of yesterday's elections is a backset to free trade from which it will never recover. The mere threat ot the Democratic parly to overthrow entirely the doctrine of protection produced such consequences as to serve for an object lesson to the people for many years, and from this time forward, protection will be upon a more solid basis than it has ever stood upon before.
The awfnl blow dealt the Democratic doctune of free trade in Ohio and elsewhere yesterday will do more to restore confidence and promote enterprise and prosperity than the repeal of a dozen Sherman silver laws. What haB been the matter with the country is the fear of Demooratic free trade. This fear will now be largely dissipated, and no one need be surprised to see a genuine revival of our manufacturing industries within the next few months.
The people have been educated in the school of experience, and by this time next year the dootrine that protection is unconstitutional will become a stench in their nostrils. William McKinley is ndeed a Napoleon and yesterday was his Austeriitz. And furthermore be is a Napoleon whoBe history will be without a Waterloo.
ON the face of the relarne it bears all the evidences of a veritable landslide, badly mixed up with a oyclone, and in which an earthquake figured conspicuously.
The Indian Was "Heeled."
Qulnnemore, formerly chief of the Cceur d'Alene tadians, has a fine farm of one hundred and sixty-seven acres on the south side of Spokane river, about a dozen miles above Spokane, Wash., and the other day the tax gatherer thought it would be a very proper and desirable thing to tax it a good round sum. So he came smilingly with his bill. But Quinnemore was prepared for him, even on such an unexpected mission. He brought forth a paper whloh in part read thus: "This patent Is issued upon the express condition that the title thereby conveyed shall not be subject to taxation of any character, but shall remain inalienable and not subject to taxation for the period of twenty years from the date thereof, as approved January 18, 1831." The assessor apologized and withdrew, not smiling. :-j.
A Queer Wager.
An American acrobat in Vienna lately won a queer wager. He bet a considerable sum with a Vienna strong man that he could not endure to have a liter of water fall drop by drop from a height of three feet upon his hand. When three hundred drops had fallen the athlete's face became red and he looked as if in pain. At the four hundred and twentieth drop he gave up, saying it was impossible to bear the pain any longer. The palm of his hand was swollen and inflamed, and in one place the skin had broken open. Only a small portion of the liter of water had gone to make up the four hundred and twenty drops.
