VIRGINIA'S FIRST PAPER.
It Wife Twelve by Sixteen. Inches In Sire and Appeared in 1730* Fifty-five years after Sir William Berkeley's thanksgiving to God that "there was no printing in Virginia," W. Parks (afterward author of
Smith's History") published the first newspaper ever published in Virginia. The first number, according to the Washington Post, was issued at Williamsburg, August 6,17&6. It was about twelve by sixteen inches in size, and the subscription price was fifteen shUlings per annum. It was under the "authority of the government" till May, 1770, when, through the influence of Mr. Jefferson,' It was published as a free paper, its columns open alike to all parties. Clementina Rind was at that time its editor, the paper having changed hands several times since the death of its founder, though perhaps^ the best remembered after him of all Its editors were Messrs. Purdie and Dixon, who published it during the revolutionary contest.
The following- are exact copies of a marriage notice, an advertisement and bit of "society news" from the Gazette. The announcement of the mar-: riage is of one of the ancestors of Dr. Edmund Lee Tompkins, of this city, who was recently made professor of nervous diseases in the Columbian university, and reads thus: "Mr. William Derricoat, of Hanover, to Miss Suckey Tonrplcies, daughter of CoL Francis Tompkies. Hers the mild luster of blooming morn and his the radiance of the rising day. Long may ihey live and mutually possess' a steady love and genuine happiness."
The advertisement says: "By the permission of the Worshipful Mayor of Williamsburg 'The Tragedy of Cato' and 'The Beaux Stratagem''will be enaoted at the old Theater on Friday, September the 3d."
The society annotmcement is that a "genteel dinner was given by our worthy representative, Peyton Randolph. Esq., at the Raleigh Tavern, to the electors of this city, where patriotic toasts were drunk and the- afternoon was spent in cheerfulness and decorum."

It has often been proved that dogs, are able to track their masters through crowded streets where It would be impossible to attribute their accuracy. to anything except the sense of smell alone. A naturalist obce inado some interesting' experiments as to this wer as exhibited in his own dog. In ese tests the naturalist found that his dumb friend could follow in the tracks of his master, though he was far out of sight, and that, too, after no less ihan eleven persons had followed, stepping exactly in the tracks made fcy his master, it being the deliberate intention to confuse the senses of the dog if possible. Further experiments proved that the-animal tracked the boots-in stead of the man, for when the naturalist put on new footgear the dog (ailed entirely.

No one has a more vlvid realization of that, But the consciousness .of the need of getting things done does not impel hhn to take his coat off and do them, so much as to contrive some way of accomplishing ends without working. The crudest way of doing that it to get rich enoughito hire labor., Accordingly, the Yankee does try to get rich, and does not try in vain. It Is not that he loves money so much' and desires to possess It -as that he loves labor so little. But to get rich Is only an indirect waj-'of beating the tyrant. The Yankee would rather abolish work than eludt It. If he can get it done without human intervention at all he likes that best, and, if he cannot wholly eliminate human1 intervention, he wants to reduce it to its lowest possible limit. When he gets-matters fixed so that the work is doae'with very little intermeddling, he is willing to sit by and supervise the process. He will put a lever and turn a-cook now and' then without much complaint, if so be it that he can ruminate and-whittle His name is a synonymn for energy" and perseverance But to make things work together for the automatic accomplishment o-labor, and to sit by and see that they work right—that is the Yankee idea of the mission of man.

Things Worth Remembering. When you feel a kind of goneness about tbe stomach it is a sign that your blood does not sit well and that you are about to nave a fit of Indigestion.
When you begin to feel nervous and are unable to sit still comfortably: when your (iothes suddenly seem to lose their fit and become too-tight in places tbe fit of indiges tion is surely upon you.
When this fit of indigestion is repeated from day to day it finally resolves itself into dyspepsia.
Remember that from three to ten of randreth's Pills will cure the worst case indigestion or dyspepsia, or both, and that aregular course of them, say two or three every night for a week or ten days^ Will act as a preventive of either complaint.
