PULLED THE DAMES.
The Oourt Will Olose All Houses of Prostitution in the Oity. The grand jury while in session made an investigation of the morals of Orawfordaville, and as a result returned indiotments against Ssllis Bogart, Jennie Belt and Jennie Bailey for keeping bouses of prostitution. Last night Sheriff Davis in company with Marshal Brothers swooped down upon the houses of these worthy women and before daybreak fifteen inmates were weeping the hours away behind the oold iron bars of oounty jail. Three young men were also captured and were put through before Mayor Ban del this morning. Those againt whom indictments had been returned met their fate in the cirouit oourt. The girls were each fined $10 and ooats and warned to leave town. The madamss did not fare so well, however. "Sister Sallie" was the first of them to appear before the bar of justice, and with no hsaitency at all she pleaded guilty to the oharge of the indictment. The oourt stated that the law allowed him to fine her $100 and imprison her in the oounty jail for six months. He intended to give her this dose. When Sally heard this awful doom she broke forth in lamentations and swore by all that was holy that she would cloee her house and go
entirely
out of business
if allowed to go. The oourt having received her promise lowered the fine to $50, and released her from imprisonment. He gave her a straight talk, however, and denounced her business as a curse on the community. He declared that if she were ever brought before before him again on a similar oharge that he would give her the limit of the law. Madames Bailey and Belt were also treated in a similar manner, both being let off with a $50 fine on a promise lo go out of business. Judge Harney declares that he intends to olose them all out. What's the Matter With Orawfordsville?
A Washington special says: Representative Brookshire to-day reintroduced his bill of the last Congress appropriating $25,000 for the purchase of a site and the construction of a fed eral building at Brazil. The measure will not beoome a law. It is not the intention of this Congress to pass any such bills.
Vory is now on the committee on appropriations and osn put his measure through. What we want to know is, why does he favor Brazil before Orawfordsville? Orawfordsville .is a larger and more important place and needs a public building. Vory better look after his home town or his home town will look after him.
Divorce Refused.
The divorce suit of Ben vs. Cora Crowe was tried in the cirouit oourt yesterday and was hotly contested from start to finish. The testimony was in part ludicrous, it part shameful and in part simply horrible. It depicted depraved human nature in its worse possible light and caused every listener to blush for the human family to whioh he belonged. Upon the conclusion of the testimony the court refused to grant the divorce either upon the oomplaint or upon the cross complaint. The two crows will have to squawk together for some time yet.
"Indiana Day" at the Pair. Governor Matthews and staff, exPreeident Harrison, J. W. Riley, Gen Lew Wallace and other Indianians will participate in the oeremoniea at the World's Fair on "Indiana Day," whioh ooonrs on September 27. It is doubtful it Senator Voorhees can be present on account of business in Washington. With this exception, the programme si published will be carried out. The rail roads will make a rate of one fare for the round trip from all points in Indiana. The tickets will be good for ten days, beginning September 25.

"Hawaii and the Hawaiian!." Miss Mary H. Krout, who is on the editorial ataff of the Chioago InterOcean, and who spent several months during the fiist part of this year at Honolulu in the interest of that paper, has been engaged by McPherson Post, No. 7, O. A. R., to deliver a lecture in this oity, the subject of her leoture being "Hawaii and the Hawaiian:." The time ohoeen ie Wednesday evening, Ootober 11. The place will be announced later. Miss Krout needs no introduction to the people of Crawfords ville. She is well known as a close and intelligent observer of people and things, and the mere announcement that she will tell her old neighbors and friends "most of which she saw and part of which she was" during her stay on the Islands should be sufficient lo draw a orowded house.
A Lie Nailed.
The races here during fair week developed the fact that Lebanon has one of the fastest trades in the State. The beet time made at Orawfordsville last week is reported to be 2:18, while the Lebanon time was 2:16£. Lebanon is destined to be a race canter and those who live here next season will witness some remarkable raoes, for already Lebanon's fame has gone abroad and ths owners of ths best stock in the country avow their intention of being here next summer. Let them come and forbid them not.-—Lebanon Patriot.
The above is rsther rioh. Everyone knows that Dr. Hails made a mile here laet week in 2:15J on a bed track. Lebanon's track in perfect weather is much slower than Crawfordsville's after a deluge.
COLLEGE NOTES.
Kern, '95, is anew Phi Psi. The Phi Beta Sigma boys huve pledged several fine new men.
Hammel will be obliged to leave ccllege again on account of his health. The foot ball team goes against the University of Illinois a week from tomorrow.
Don't fail to see the Freshman-Soph-omore game to-morrow. You'll get your money's worth in fun and fine plays.
Will Guthrie, of Lebanon, who attended Wabash College a couple of years ago, was married yesterday to a Miss Conn, of Van Wert, Ohio.
The attendance at DePauw University is smaller than it has been for several years. There is also a dropping off at all the other oollege in the State except Wabash.
While the foot ball team is gratified to have both students and citizens attend the practice game, the players earnestly request all who cannot kepp out of lines to keep away. It interferes with the playing and imperils lives.
A combination composed of the Phi Psis, Phi Gams, Sigma Chis snd Alpha Delta Phis swept things in the Atbletio Association, eleotion yesterday. The graceless yonng hobos who bring this spirit into the association are preparing the path for disaster.
Moore, '94, Busbnell and Wood were appointed a committee ^to form a new college yell which is to be submitted to the Athletic Association this afternoon. Moore will furnish tbo noise and Bush null the poetry and Wood will act as mediator should the noise and poetry disagree.
An unfortunate, though not serious chapter of aocidente, ooourred on the gridiron field lest- night. Gooding reosived a bad oat on the lip, Oooper and his breath parted oompany for a few minutes, and Parry, whils making a taokle, had his left hip severely sprained but none of the injuries will incapacitate the players for any length of time.
The Athletio Association held a rather tame meeting last night in Calliopean hall tor the eleotion of officers. Huffer, of the Sophomore class, was sleeted Preeident Kern, of the Junior class, Vice President D. D. Haines, Treasurer and Hall, '95, Secretary. R. M. Johns was elected to succeed John A. Blair as President of the Indiana Inter oolleague Athletic Assooistion. The exocutive committee will be elected at a meeting to be held this afternoon.

Method, of Collection.
Indiana Natural and Illuminating Gas Company—Crawfordsville Division.
To insure more prompt ool laction of bills this Oompany has selected a number of yearly contracts on whioh it will oolleot monthly in advance, instead of quarterly, beginning with the first day of Ootober. Consumers whose accounts will be collected monthly hereafter will receive a notice to that effect on that date stating the amount of the first payment. After Ootober no notice will be sent either to oonsnmers with monthly oontrscts or to those with yearly contracts payable monthly. It is presumed that they know that the regular monthly payment is dne between the first and tenth of eaoh month and that they will be expected to come to the office and make the payment within the time fixed by their contraot.
No obange of rate is contemplated or made by this change, merely a change in the manner of collection, whioh makes the payments smaller and more fraqnent. Any customer may pay as many months in advance as they may wish, but one month in advance must be paid by the tenth of each month or\the gas will be shut off promptly on the eleventh without further notice.
Consumers paying quarterly will reoeive the regular notioe as usual. Consumers delinquent at this date are notified to make payment in full by Ootober 1, aa no customers will be supplied after that date for gas in any previous month. JOHN MOALOTT,
