What Crinoline Is.

There seema to be a vague idea in the minds of most people as to what crinolind is, after all. Crinoline absolutely lias come—but the hoop-skirt has not. Crinoline is a sort of stiff lining muMin, used to make the skirts of dresses llare round the bottom, and, much as the term is despised, i' is not half so much used for the abhorred purpose as is hair sloth, against which, up to date, no one has inveighed.

In Paint

the best Is the cheapest. Strictly Pure

White Lead is best properly applied it will not scale, chip, chalk, or rub off it firmly adheres to the wood and forms a permanent base for repainting. Paints which peel or scale have to be removed by scraping- or burning before satisfactory repainting can be done. When buying it is important to obtain

Strictly Pure White Lead

properly made. Time has proven that white lead made by the Old Dutch process of slow corrosion possesses qualities that cannot be obtained by any other method of manufacture. This process consumes four to six months time, and produces the brands that have given White Lead

it9

character

as the standard paint. "Armstrong & McKelvy" "Beymer-Bauman" "Eckstein" "Fahnestock" "Anchor" "Kentucky" "Morley" "Southern" "Shipman" "Red Seal" "Collier" "Davis-Chambers" are standard brands of strictly pure Lead made by the Old Dutch process. You get the best in buying them. You can produce any desired color by tinting these brands of white lead with National Lead Co.'s Pure White Lead Tinting Colors.

For sale by the most reliable dealers ID Palnta everywhere. If you are going to paint, It will pay you to •end to ua for a book containing information that may save you many a dollar it will only cost you a postal card to do so.

WILL REPRESENT INDIANA,

Commissioners Named to Looate State Troops on Battlefields. Governor Matthews on Saturday announced his'appointments to the State commission to act with the National commission in the location of Indiana troops in .the battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga, where National parks are to be located. The list indues ten veterans, as follows: Colonel R. M.Johnson, Elkhart Captain James H. MoHugh, Indianapolis Captain George H. Puntenny, Rushville Captain William P. Herron, Crawfordsville Captain Felix Shumate, Lebanon General Morton O. Hunter, Bloomington General James R. Carnahan, Indianapolis Captain Milton Garrigus, Kbkomo Captain Dyer B. McConnell, Logansport Captain Milton M. Thompson, Fort Wayne. The oommiRaioners are instructed to report to General H.JV. Boynton at Washington.

They Want Him In fountain. Jesse Booe, the yonng man who formerly resided in Hillsboro, and has been confined in the Crawfordsville jail three monthB on the oharge of stealing meat from Hon. F. M. Dice, entered court Thursday morning and pleaded guilty to the charge, asking the mercy of the court. The high standing his family and his promise of good behavior touched the judge and he only gave him sixty days in the county jail. The Crawfordsville pnpers speak rough of Jess, the JOURNAL going so far as to say he should be drammed out of town when released. Sheria Moore was present expecting to take charge of Jess if he was released nnd bring him to this county to answer to a similar oharge perferred against him by Cain township people and will no doubt bring him here when he has served his sentence.— I 'eedersburg A'eu's.

Bicyclers Shut Out of the Fair. Architect Burnham, whose official title is Direstor of Works, although the construction part of the Exposition iB practically done, has countermanded the permit issued to the wheelman's clubs and leagues to have a cycling race with in the grounds. Mr. Burnham does not even deign to 'give any reason for his countermanding order. The wheelmen cannot parade in the park,

enough for them to know, Mr. Bnrnham apparently thinks. They can come up to the gate on their wheels, leave them in the big shed erected for that purpose and see the Exposition for fifty cents, like an ordinary visitor, but they must not celebrate.

Promises to Investigate.

A Chicago dispatch says that Mayor Harrison haB received a large number of letters from Indiana from people who complain that they have been swindled by the Aldine hotel failure. He has turned them all over to Chief McClaughry, who has detailed a detective to investigate the affair so far as those responsible will permit him. He says that if anything criminal is brought to light, that will warrant him in such action, tho facts in tho case will be placed before State's Attorney Kern for such steps ns he may deem advisable.

Entertained.

On Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs Pembroke Reynolds were at boms to the traveling nee and their wives nt their residence on east Wabash avenue. The afTair was one of pleasure nnd enjoy nient for all present and was continued nntil quite a late honr. An elegant oollation wns served during the conrse o! the evening and various amusements B-irved to pass the time away.

An Impossibility.

It is an impossibility to count a trillion. At the rate of '200 11 minute you would count 12,000 an honr, 288, 000 a day, and 100,120,000 a year. At thin rate it would take 9,512 years to count a trillion. Adam would yot bo counting had he undertaken this task, and not eaten the forbidden apple.

OPPOSED TO DR. BRIGGS.

Dr. Tucker Don't Believe in the Famous Presbyterian'8 Views, and Bays So In Strong Terms.

Crawfordsville is having an interesting little Briggs controversy all to hereself and everybody is talking about the noted Presbyterian heretic. People are about equally divided on the question and sides are taken warmly, but as yet, no one has so far forgot himself as to get out of humor over the matter. Closely following the sermon of Dr. It. J. Cunningham, denouncing the General Assembly for ousting Dr. Briggs, and the publication of the sermon in THE JOURNAL, comes Dr. Tucker, of the Methodist chnroh, taking exactly the opposite views and denounces Dr. Briggs and his teaching as dangerous. It had been announced that Dr. Tucker would talk about the Briggs question so there was a large crowd present and the curiosity was great to see which side of the fence the speaker would take. The suspense was not long for Dr. Tucker's scriptural reading and prayer foreshadowed his position plainly. He classed Dr. Briggs with Stranss and the rationalists of the first part of the century, and said they were simply disguising their heretical teachings under the term "higher criticism." He do nounced Dr. Briggs as a "willful, headstrong egotist who was anxious to pose as a martyr." The speaker had in the pulpit a oopy of THE JOURNAL containidg Dr. Cunningham's sermon and quoted that part where Dr. Briggs says he believes the Bible "inerrant in all matters^ooncerning faith and praotice," also the part which says that Dr. Briggs does not "make falBe teachers of religion or deny the Lord." These statements

Dr. Tucker directly contradicted nnd upheld his position by quotations from the charges against Briggs and by the writings of Briggs himself. In conclusion Dr. Tucker said that we should be broad enough to welcome all investigation but reject all theories inconsistent with the Bible. As to facts he was snre that there never was one which would make the infallibility of the Bible the least bit doubtful.

An Extra Edition.

Although a larger edition of TITE JOURNAL was printed Saturday thnn usual the supply was far short of tho demand, Accordingly another large edition waa printed this morning anil those who desire extrn copies on account of Dr. Cunningham's sermon on Dr. Briggs enn now get them.
