THE LIBEBTY BELL. A HEW PHASE

Tho History of tlie Famofls Bell to be Seen at the 'World's Pair. The Liberty Bell, on exhibition at the World's Fair, has an interesting history and is proving to be a great objeot of interest in Chioago. The order for the bell was given in 1751 by the "Freemen of the Province of Pennsylvania," and Peter Norris was chairman of the oommittee appointed to purchase the bell. The order for the bell was given to Robert Charles, of London, the speoifloation being that the bell should weigh near ,000 pounds and to cost £100 sterling. The bell bears the inscriptions: "By order of the Province ot Pennsylvania, for the State house in the oity of Philadelphia, 1752," and "Proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all the inhabitants thereof." The last inscription is found in Leviticus xxv, 10, and the entire verse reads: "And ye shall hallow tho fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land and to the inhabitants thereof." The Quakers had in memory the fact that it was over fifty fifty years then sinoe William Penn landed. In August, 1752, the new bell arrived and while being tested it was cracked. It could not be sent back because the captain of the vessel could not take it upon his return trip. The men undertook to recast the bell, whioh on being opened, revealed a bell that was

I so defective. The original bell was considered too high tone, and some copper was added to the composition, but too much copper was added. Then the bell was cast again and placed in position in June, 1753. On July 8, 1776, it annonnced the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The bell was used for fifty years, when it cracked and was removed to a lower story, afterwards being placed upon the original timbers in the vestibule ot the State house. In 1873 it was suspended immediately beneath another bell that is now used. Along the route to Chioago the Liberty Bell drew large crowds, and is indeed an object of much interest to evervone.

McOlellan Bound Over.

McClellan Jones a son of Burrel Jone, met his fate in the Mayor's court this morning. He was accused of the unseemly misdemeanor of appropriating to the use of the Jones family a speckled turkey hen with strong setting propensities, which hen previous to May 8 had been reckoned among the chattels of Mrs. Thomas N. West. It leaked out in evidence that McClellan had been seen cutting across lots on the fateful eighth of May with a hen answering the description under his arm nnd in spite of his protestations that he had spent the day in the commendable labor of fishing nnd the night in the exemplary attend ance on a church social, the mayor bound him over to the circuit court in the sum of $50.

Of the Opera House Biot Oase—Five of Murphy's Affidavit-Makers Indicted for Perjury.

The Grand Jury got through with the business of the term late yesterday afternoon and reported, As a result of their deliberations, Bert Uuderhill and George W. Noble, of Washington township, and Henry J. Smith and James Cullen, of Wabash township, were last night arretted oharged with perjury. The charge made against them grew our of affidavits made by them in support for a motion for a new trial made in the oase of Bartholomew J. Murphy, charged with riot. Underbill and Noble made affidavits that James Packer, one of the jurors in the Murphy oase, had expressed an opinion concerning the case before he was called as a juror, their affidavit being presented to impeach Parker's voir dire and to support one of the reasons for a new trial presented by the defense. Cullen and Smith made similar affidavits against Juror Stretch, swearing that he had expressed an opinion in the oase before being called as a juror. AgainBt each of these affidavits the State filed impeaching affidavits, and this is the present result. Edward Smith tecnme security for his son, Henry J. Stmith, and John Centzler for Cullen, in the sum of $500 each, and they were released. Underbill and Noble were taken to jail.

Martin Waldvogel, ot Wabash township, was arrested this morning on an indiotment for perjury, returned by the grand jury. He is one of the parties charged with having sworn falsely as to something that Juror Stretch was alledged to have said. He gave bond in the sum of $500, with John Kentzler as security.—Lafayette Call.

W. Thornton Parker. M. D., Recorder, Association of Acting Assistant Surgeons of the S. Army, writes:

SAI.BM, Mass., March 23, 1S91.—When at Stuttgart. Germany, during the winter ol ISS1-S2, I was suffering from a severe attack of bronchitis, which seemed to threaten pneumonia. I met, at the Hotel Marquardt., Commander Beardslce, of tho United States Navy. In speaking of my sickness ho remarkod: 'Doctor, you can euro that chest trouble of yours by using an Allcock's Porous Plaster.' 'That may be true,' I answered, 'but where can 1 get tho plaster?' 'Anywhere in tbe civilized world, and surely here in Stuttgart. Whenever I have a cold, I always uso one and find relief.' I sent to tho drugstore for tbe plaster, and it did all that my friend had promised. Ever since then I have used it whenever suffering from a cold, and I have mauy times prescribed it for patients. '•Tbo Allcock's Plaster is tho best to be bad, and has saved many front severe illness, and undoubtedly, if used promptly, will save many valuable lives. Whenever one has a severe cold they should put on an Allcock's Plaster as soon as possible. It should be placed across tho cheat, the upper margin Just below the nock some hot beef tea, or milk, will aid in the treatment. "This is not a oatcnt remedy in tho objectionable sense of that term, but a stand aril preparation of value. Tho Government supplies for tho U. S Army and Indian Hospital Stores contain Allcock's Plasters, and the medical profession throughout tho world are well aware of thoir reliability and excellence. I shall always recommend it, notonly to break up colds, but as useful in allaying pains in the chest and in tbe back. It is a preparation worthy of general confidence."
